Hi! I need to create a dtml-tree which obtains the branches from a python function. The best doc (well, the only one) I found is http://www.zope.org/Members/anthony/tree-coding-tricks , but I can't get to work the very same example the author writes there. I have tried two ways: a) writing his python code in a python script, but it says I can't define a class in a python script; b) writing his python code in an external method, but it keeps asking me for authentication and eventually says I have no authorization. Can anyone tell me what the problem is? Has anyone succeeded in doing this, that is to say, building a dtml-tree that obtains the branches from a python method? Thanks in advance, Igor Leturia

A few Zope advises...

Hi... My question is quite simple, but probably difficult to answer... I'm actually starting a new huge project, which is a complete rebuild of our huge 'intranet' server, actually based on Netscape Server. The new server may be as 'free' as possible... Zope seems to be the best free product actually available for us, to handle the huge amount of documents we have to share, and what I actually need is a few advises and best practices, as : - is there a "prefered" or "best working" operating system to run Zope servers ?? I may have to choose between a Debian GNU/Linux server (SMP on Intel) and a Solaris server (on Sparc). I've read here and there several messages talking about problems with Zope on Solaris, are they always true ?? - as we also have a few applications to share, which can't be handled by Zope before several weeks, is there a best way to combine Zope and Apache ?? mod_proxy, mod_rewrite, pcgi, fastcgi, virtual hosts ??? What are the benefits and drawbacks of each of them ?? - as our needs are rather simple, and may just include customization and improvements to standard products, are there any benefits or drawbacks to write our new products as ZClasses, instead of full Python written products ?? Are the performances of each other equivalent ?? - as we may quickly have a large amount of documents stored in our Zope database, is it a better practice to store everything into the ZODB, or to make Zope handle only metadatas and store real documents into external objects (by using products like ExternalFile, for example) ?? I'm a little afraid when thinking of all my files stored in a single Zope database, and I think that storing documents externally may speed up several processes like incremental backups... As you can see, we are just starting our Zope evaluation, and so I'd really like to receive any advise or suggestion to implement Zope as well as possible... My question is: Are ZClases going to dissapear in the near releases of Zope? or Will they continue as an alternative to the user? The thing is that all my products are ZClass based and now I don't have much time to convert them. I'll do it becaue I think it's better when you can have more control of your objects. (FYI, we often use ExternalFile for large PDFs to prevent bloating the ZOD, but not always. In doing so, the object's "behave like" property needs to be set to "Image".) This worked for us on the few problem PDFs we've had so far -- YMMV. Working in versions

Is it possible to programatically work in a version? It's easy to create one with a Python script but how do I start working with objects and then commiting or abandoning that work? If hardware is an issue, it should be said (if you have existing Sun hardware), Zope will run quite nicely on Debian/SPARC (my current ZEO storage server, for example, runs on Debian on an E450). Though I imagine you will get much better speed out of Intel/AMD-based hardware for Zope than you would out of Sun hardware. I'm far more comfortable there than in Solaris, and all my Solaris installations are scientific workstations anyway. So no Solaris servers here. One thing to keep in mind is that if you: - want to run Debian's stable release, and - want to run the latest Zope, and - don't want to compile either Zope or Python yourself you might run into trouble. Debian's release schedule is very conservative (some might even say slow). The main hitch is when Zope starts requiring a newer version of Python than Debian has in its stable release (as happened between Zope 2.3 and 2.4). I use proxy and rewrite (insert plug for http://www.zope.org/Members/mwr/VHosts_With_Zope_Default) and each major production site gets its own INSTANCE_HOME for custom products. Use http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/HowTo/easyProduct to get a quick start; as quickly as one can develop a Python product with Max's structure in place, I'd be surprised if a ZClass was much faster. I think he's working on an updated version including Catalog awareness and perhaps some cosmetic changes to the management interface to make it look more like core Zope products. Do you need to take advantage of Zope's "Undo" capabilities? If so, I think you'll end up using the ZODB. MailHost errors

Hey, all. I'm invoking a dtml-method from a script, and the dtml-method has a dtml-sendmail call within it. I'm getting a Error Type: KeyError Error Value: MailHost when I try to execute my dtml-method. I have a MailHost object in the parent directory. I was assuming that acquisition would allow a subfolder to see the root folder's MailHost object. Am I wrong? I have another dtml method in my root folder, and that successfully sends out emails with the same MailHost object, so I know the MailHost configuration, and my sendmail configuration, is fine. One other difference is that the root folder dtml method is invoked by another dtml method, and the dtml method in my subfolder is invoked by a script. Does that make a difference? Automatically login from a XRON method...

Hi, I just want to automatically login a user from a XRON Method and then make some other things that because of the Zope security restrictions can't be done as the "anonymous" user. I've searched in the newsgroup but the only answers are by using cookies. I've tried the following code but it only works when I execute it from a web browser: <dtml-if expr="portal_membership.isAnonymousUser()"> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.setCookie('__ac_name','myUser')"> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.setCookie('__ac_password','myPassword')"> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('myMethod')"> <dtml-else> My code </dtml-if> This also: External method: def loginCronUser(self): self.REQUEST.RESPONSE.setCookie('__ac_name','myUser') self.REQUEST.RESPONSE.setCookie('__ac_password','myPassword') But I always get the following error message: Failed to trigger event. Type=bci.ServerError Val=302 (File: Unknown Line: Unknown) I guess the problem is that XRON Methods don't do that through a web browser, so the cookie can't be set up.
