conditionally caching zope
by Navindra Umanee 24 Mar '02

24 Mar '02

Hi, Currently our Zope setup (http://dot.kde.org/) can't gracefully take the full brunt of our site hits, so we are using an Apache proxy/cache solution which works very nicely. For many pages however, I would like Apache to send cached copies IF a certain cookie is NOT set, and otherwise, query Zope for a dynamic page. This tactic would enable us to handle Slashdotting while not losing the settings of our regular readers. Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions? Thanks, Navin.

Re: [Zope3-dev] a note on groups and roles

Well, you can use roles as if they are groups, and that roles are Zopes name for groups are a common misconception. > (Is it possible to assign one role to another role? A SuperDeveloper > had developer and super roles?) No, and I don't think it should be possible either. A role consists of the permissions needed to perform the tasks you need in an organisational role. Making groups of roles would add an level of indirection that really has no purpose, and it will only make the user interface more complicated. > LR> But if groups do nothing more than group > LR> principals, then groups are only a way to make assignments of > LR> one principal to several roles quicker. > > Quick has nothing to do with it. The hierarchy promotes modularity in > security administration and makes it easier to reason about the policy. Groups, as discussed so far, are only collection of principals, and are therefore only useful in making assignments of one principal to several local roles quicker. There are several ways of implementing hierachies, and if they promote modularity and makes it easier to reason about a policy depends in part on how that implementation is done. If hierarchies are introduced I think the most useful way would be by creating a user hierarchy with organisational units in which users are placed, a la NDS. It would be misleading to call these organisational units "groups". Hierarchy can be useful, but what is also useful is orthogonality, which you don't get with groups. With "workgroups" you do. > I'm not sure what the innovate roles concept is :-). Thats interesting, since you have been discussing it. :-)

Re: [Zope] In-browser WYSIWYG editor?

I'm currently trying to integrate a WYSIWYG editor inside the ZMI. You can have a preview at: http://gewis.nl/~pieterb/zope/iedocument/iedocument_preview_mxi.jpg I'm using the following Zope products: http://www.zope.org/Members/arvid/IEDocument http://www.zope.org/Members/sf/HTMLDocument http://vsbabu.org/webdev/zopedev/ieeditor.html I only concentrate on IE only editors (because it's only used for an intranet). They seem to be, based on either: - Microsoft DHTML Editing control (not longer supported by MS), - MSHTML (I didn't get HTML tables to work with it) More references on Microsoft editors: - http://www.microsoft.com/mind/defaulttop.asp?page=/mind/0299/inside/inside0… - http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/samples/internet/default.asp?url=/Downl… - http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/browser/editing… There seem to be a lot of inititatives to create new editors, but I didn't find the ideal WYSIWYG editor yet. Hope this helps, Pieter

Announce: CMF Web Agent v. 1.0
by Doug Hellmann 23 Mar '02

23 Mar '02

The CMF Web Agent is an application that allows you to monitor the entire web (or as much as is indexed by several popular search engines, anyway) for new pages related to topics of interest. For example, monitor the web for any mention of your new startup company, and display the results as a news list on your company intranet. Alternatively, monitor the net for your own name or email address and keep the results in your private content management portal. This new release of the CMF Web Agent provides a stable version which has been running in operation on two different sites for several months. New features include a plugin architecture for adding agent information sources. Two search engines (Google and AllTheWeb) are provided by default. New information sources can be built by the user for public (submissions for inclusion in the standard distribution are welcome) or private search sources. Check it out at http://www.zope.org/Members/hellmann/CMFWebAgent. Doug

Announce: CMF News Feed
by Doug Hellmann 23 Mar '02

23 Mar '02

The CMF News Feed is an application that allows you to import news headlines from other sites directly into your site via RDF/RSS feeds. For example, combine headlines from Zope.org, Slashdot, The Washington Post, and other sites into one set of news headlines on your private web site. Alternatively, monitor industry news sites and display the headlines on your company intranet. Check it out at http://www.zope.org/Members/hellmann/CMFNewsFeed. Doug

'Cookie crumb trail' navigation
by Iago 23 Mar '02

23 Mar '02

Howdy. I'll get right to it: Say I have a folder structure, a/b/c I'm in c. I want to establish some kind of method (my current attempts are a python script), stored in a, which will render the following: <a href="http://myserver.org/a/">A</a>: <a href="http://myserver.org/a/b/">B</a>: C: My current attempt only gets me: <a href="http://myserver.org/a/">A</a>: C: Here's the code for recursiveLinks: --- SNIP --- import string if list == None: list = [] if len(list) > 0: list.append( '<a href="%s">%s</a>' % ( context.absolute_url(), context.title or context.id ) ) else: list.append( '%s' % context.title or context.id ) if context is container: list.reverse() print string.join(list,' > ') return printed else: # this doesn't work: return context['..'].recursiveLinks(list=list) return container.recursiveLinks(list=list) --- SNIP --- Now, what I _really_ want is for 'context' to give me an object which is 'the context one level up from here', so I can recursively step up until i hit a folder I somehow designate as "top". I thought I was getting that with context and container, but as it turns out, container, where the above python script (recursiveLinks) lives, is not the container of context (the 'c' folder in this case) -- it's the container of the script (near as I can tell, since the result I'm getting is A: C and not A: B: C) How can I get 'next-folder-up' from this, in an object context so that I can grab the 'title' and other attributes off of the object, and recurse (as I thought I was doing above) by going to yet another 'next-folder-up'? Any help here's appreciated. I'm about 48 hours into learning zope. :) -- Fred Hicks <iago(a)iago.net>

Announce: First release of QuotaFolder product
by Ivo van der Wijk 23 Mar '02

23 Mar '02

First Release of Quotafolder QuotaFolder is a folder-ish object that restricts the total number of objects, their total size and their individual maximum size. QuotaFolder takes subfolders (recursively) into account, so it should not be possible to escape the quota restrictions. QuotaFolder was developed as part of Amaze Internet Service's FreeZope.org Free Zope hosting service (http://www.freezope.org) More information, and the product itself can be found here: http://www.zope.org/Members/ivo/QuotaFolder -- Drs. New PropertyManager
by Thomas Guettler 23 Mar '02

23 Mar '02

I would like to add some things to the PropertyManager: 1. mulitple selections should be a list of check-boxes. I don't like the ctrl-click method in the select-box. 2. Would be nice if each property has a second name, which is used for displaying it to the user. This is neccesarry if you have properties with umlauts. Is someone interested in this, or is there already a solution? thomas
