Should we really be seen as a bunch of spammers?

Hi Pete, Peter Sokolowski wrote: > > Chris I apologise for trying to offer you a system that can be of benefit to > you and your company, but obviously you can not see the benefit of this. I can see the benefits, I can't, however, understand your marketing tactics. I've been well aware of Bizar software for some time and had been considering your product for a project. So, you didn't need to send me a lump of HTML spam to try and ease money out of my pocket. It's degrading, you take what for all I know could have been a first class product and lower it to the level of a cheap porn site by your method of advertising. > To let you know our product is very extensively used in the ZOPE community > and will be by The Zope Corporation them selves. That's good news :-) I'm sure a case study on zope.org or information on your site could have told me that when I went looking. I'm fairly sure you didn't actually include that information in your spam, which is strange. > I don't know what exactly has ticked you off, obviously you were > having a bad day. Well, let me be entirely explicit. I have an extreme aversion to unsolicited marketing communications such as junk mail, coldcalling and spam, especially when they are damaging to the industry which currently forms my primary revenue stream. As a form of marketing, spam simply doesn't work and as a national account manager, I'm sure you know that reputation and referal will get you a lot further in most cases. > Probably because your company is going under you refuse > to look at any system using your beloved ZOPE to help you increase profits. Quite the opposite. Zope is at a big crossroads right now. We have Zope 3 in development and a backing company whose stated aim is to grow Zope 10x over the next year. It can go one of two ways; if we can all work together with integrity I reckon we can make Zope into a world class product and very lucrative market. If we let ourselves cheapen what is currently a shining light in the open source world then it may end up being just another crappy little system that people are forever trying to replace or ignore completely. > I have no problem being told to fuck-off but your attitude sucks and you > should get a life. I am more than happy with my life, thankyou ;-) As for my attitude, yes, it is a problem since I really should stop handing out free business advise to competitors :-( > I will also post your response email to the zope mailing > list, so that people can see first had what a wanker you are and I will make > sure I also on send your response to Zope Corp them selves. Well, I see you chose to back down on that so I thought I'd do it for you :-) > You were given the option to unsubscribe from our list, Now that's the kind of thing that REALLY pisses me off. Why should I have to do ANYTHING to stop recieving junk email? I certainly didn't ask for it, why should I have to ask for it to stop?! <more abuse from Pete snipped> > I would be happy to continue this conversation over the phone, but I am sure > that to are too gutless to go down that path, as you feel safe protected by > your computer screen. Well, were I in Australia I would happily continue it face to face ;-) As for the phone call, I would, but to be entirely honest, I'm not going to spend the cost of an international phone call in providing you with free consulting on how best to market your product. Should you be interested in some consulting, do get in touch, I'm sure we can arrange something :-) cheers, Chris PS: If anyone is interesting in either the initial piece of spam or my response to it, please let me know and I'll forward them off list...

Problem displaying products icons with virtualhostmonster
by Joachim Schmitz 25 Mar '02

25 Mar '02

Hi, product icons are displayed in the management-view with a tag like: <img src="/Control_Panel/Products/MyProduct/MyFolder/ziconImage alt="MyFolder" title="MyFolder" border="0" /> If I do virtualhosting with VHM, I have no access to the /Control_Panel, and I don't want to grant it. Zope Icons are accessed like this: <img src="/misc_/OFSP/Folder_icon.gif" alt="Folder" title="Folder" border="0" /> where I can grant access to the "/misc_" folder. Any suggestions to solve this ? Page Templates + python script example fromThe Zope Book
by Wendy Langer 25 Mar '02

25 Mar '02

Hello all, I am trying to get the "interest rate calculator" example from chapter 3 of the Zope Book to work. I created an interestRateForm page template, an interestRateDisplayTemplate, and a python script, as described in the chapter (the code was copied directly from the book and is listed at the bottom of this email for reference). When I try to use the example by pointing my browser at the interestRateForm URL(this displays correctly), I give it some values as requested, then click the calculate button. The error I get is Error Type: Undefined Error Value: years not found in 'years', at line 5, column 6 If I comment out the first line referring to the "years" variable, ie Then I get the slightly different but probably related error Error Type: TALESError Error Value: exceptions.NameError on global name 'principal' is not defined in '', at line 6, column 8 ie referring now to the spot in the interestRateDisplay template where the python script is actually called, with "principle" being the first argument to it. As far as I can guess, these variables are not being correctly passed from the interestRateForm template to the interestRateDisplay template. I haven't reaally been able to find anything explicit about how variables are passed between page templates, how the namespace works, etc. I tried to have a look at the REQUEST object, I inserted it using <span tal:content="request"> dummy request </span> I realise there must be a better way to do this , since this prints out a godawful mess full of html tags, however i *was* able to see that the various variables were there in the request object, ie: h3>form</h3><table><tr valign="top" align="left"><th>principal</th><td>10000.0</td></tr><tr valign="top" align="left"><th>periods Does anyone have any clues as to what I need to do next to make it work? Thanks :) Wendy Langer interestRateForm **************** <html> <body> <form action="interestRateDisplay" method="POST"> <p>Please enter the following information:</p> Your current balance (or debt): <input name="principal:float"><br> Your annual interest rate: <input name="interest_rate:float"><br> Number of periods in a year: <input name="periods:int"><br> Number of years: <input name="years:int"><br> <input type="submit" value=" Calculate "><br> </form> </body> </html> InterestRateDisplay ******************* <html> <body> <p>Your total balance (or debt) including compounded interest over <span tal:content="years">2</span> years is:</p> <p><b>$<span tal:content="python: here.calculateCompoundingInterest(principal, interest_rate, periods, years)">1.00</span></b></p> </body> </html> calculateCompoundInterest ************************* """ Calculate compounding interest. Setting up a dedicated Zope box
by Tom Nixon 25 Mar '02

25 Mar '02

I'm going to be setting up a Zope server soon for a public web site. The server will also be running mySQL and possibly Apache. What Operating System is recommended both from the point of view of ease of Zope installation and also stability/performance etc? Finally, what would be considered a minimum spec for such a server? Many thanks Tom

DTML namespace from Python Script
by Terry Hancock 25 Mar '02

25 Mar '02

I could've sworn I saw the answer to this at one point, but now I can't find it: How can I access the "_" namespace in a Python Script? E.g., within a DTML Method I can use "_.SecurityGetUser()" to get the current authenticated user, but I've tried a lot of different versions in a Python Script and none of them seems to work: SecurityGetUser() _.SecurityGetUser() context.SecurityGetUser() and so on. It seems to me that I *ought* to be able to use the same calling convention in either DTML Python expressions or within a Python script. Curiously the first choice above would seem to be implied by the use of Python "builtins" such as "int()", which is refered to as "_.int()" within DTML. But I've tried it -- it doesn't work here, I just get an attribute error. It's this kind of "except on Tuesday" design that really frustrates me about Zope, in case any developers are tuned in! I could go on, but it would just be a rant. Anyone know the arcane incantation I'm supposed to use for this? Any pointers appreciated! Thanks! Simpler way to change ZCataloged ZClass property?
by Milos Prudek 24 Mar '02

24 Mar '02

To change a property of a ZClass, where the ZClass instance must be located using ZCatalog, I'm using this Python Script: for i in context.Catalog_Org(userid=666): rid=i.data_record_id_ obj=context.Catalog_Org.getobject(rid) obj.propertysheets.data.manage_changeProperties(userid="777") It works well. But is this the "right" way? It feels rather convoluted to me... I'd like to know if the above can be done in fewer lines, or in a less computationally expensive way. -- Milos Prudek

Question on Perl , PHP in Zope (UVM etc)
by Marcio Marchini 24 Mar '02

24 Mar '02

Hi, When Zope runs, the Python interpreter is running the code, so far so good. But it is also possible to script Zope with Perl, so I was wondering if a new instance of the Perl interpreter is launched every time (as with the PHP Product) or if the Perl interpreter is "linked in" and reused ? If it is reused/linked, why can't the same be done for PHP ? It seems that a Universal Virtual Machine (UVM) would be ideal to allow mixing languages, right ? This way you have a common runtime (like .NET) and no need to restart a different interpreter or fight different memory models or anything. (It does not have to be .NET, something like www.smallscript.com would do too - not sure if there's any solid Open Source UVM out there, though) thanks in advance for your feedback, marcio

WGET recursion problem.
by Jason C. Leach 24 Mar '02

24 Mar '02

hi, I am trying to get a web site from our Zope server ( Apache Proxy ). When I send wget after it, I get crazy recursive loops. Does anyone know what would cause this? Could it be the Apache/Zope ( virtual domains ), or is it the actual HTML. j. ` -- ...................... ..... Jason C. Leach .. PGP/GPG Public key at http://www.keyserver.net/ Key ID: 1CF6DA85

restrict Add drop-down list in Folder Contents view
by John Hunter 24 Mar '02

24 Mar '02

I have a Folder and I want to restrict the types of objects the managers of that folder can add to it. In the Security tab, I can limit the kinds of objects that can be added, and this works fine, but the forbidden objects still show up in the drop down list in the Contents view. I know I can create a ZClass derived from ObjectManager and just select the limited set of Subobjects, but this imposes extra overhead and a proliferation of specialized container ZClasses. I would really just like a Folder where the manager sees only the kinds of objects he has the permission to add in the 'Add' select list. Any suggestions on how I can do this? Thanks, John Hunter Zope 2.5.x
