How do I get at the attributes of an object's parent? I cannot use acquisition because the current object might have an attribute of the same name. T.

Quality vs. Quantity (Was: Re: RTFM? IWMITWAFM! (Was: Re: [Zope] WebDAV, Zope, M$ and implications...))
by Howard Hansen 15 Mar '02

Dieter, I appreciate all of the work you and the other Zope deities do helping people. Clearly this entails a great deal of time and effort on your part and you probably don't get nearly the recognition you deserve. >From a short-term perspective, it probably makes more sense for you to spend your list-reading hour per day responding to the largest number of requests possible. I don't think that's true from a long-term perspective. In my experience, progressing from Zope newbie to someone who knows just enough about Zope to be dangerous, I've searched many many times for solutions to problems, only to find little squibs of answers saying things like "RTFM about Virtual Host Monsters" or "Download ZPatterns and use that". I would suggest that you try answering half of the total number of questions, but answer them as fully as you can, assuming that the user knows essentially nothing. Pepper those answers with links, explanations, and philosophical asides. Make it a mini-howto and a seminar on advanced topics in Zope. And be sure to spend exactly the same amount of time, don't add to your burden. I think the result of this would be that the next time someone has the same question, they'll do a search and be much more likely to find your answer in the archives. If they can't and it ends up on the list, I might just remember your contribution, find it, and point the newbie there myself, while you spend your hour writing up another mini-howto for the ages. Of course, I could be wrong, but I think it's worth a try! You ask for a lot, too much for me personally, at least: I read several hundred posts per day and respond to about a dozen. I have only a few minutes per post. While, of course, it would take only some additional few minutes to look up a (single) precise URL or reference, I get angry when someones asks "URL please!". It is his problem not mine. He cannot expect that I take longer to help him solve his problem than he is ready to work on it himself. Therefore, many of my responses are: background reading, mailing list archives, search Zope.org... When you think that weakens the community and you want to change something, then you are invited to take over where I (and others) stop. Dieter

How about Zope3.0 and CMF Registration
by Pascal Samuzeau 15 Mar '02

15 Mar '02

Hi, I want to know, what will happened with the new version Zope 3, and the CMF. In my special case, I have rewrite, a little, the RegistrationTool, to permit only one name with one e-mail to get a subscription. Because, before anyone have multiple subscription, with the same name or the same e-mail, I have had a lot of Members. Do you think, it's possible to have, with this new Zope version, this unique registration, based on a one name and one e-mail? Sincerily PS -------------------------------------------------- Oreka ! Newbie understanding of objects.
by Russell Hires 15 Mar '02

15 Mar '02

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello all, I just want to make sure I've got this right. I finally got a picture of what an object from the Zope Tutorial. If this passes the smoke test, (IOW, if it's accurate) I'll put in the zope.org site somewhere. Thanks for your input. Russell What is an object? In the zope tutorial, an object was created for an email address. This object was the address itself (myname(a)zope.org) You create the object so that you only have to enter a few letters or words to get what you want, rather than having to write the whole thing out. The email address is really site contact information. If you have 10 pages that you want to have the same contact information, you want it all to go to the maintainer of a particular section of your site, you can create an object for this purpose. Our site contact object is composed of two properties. One is the actual email address. The other is what you want the object's name to be. The "Name" part is what you are calling the object. This is the part that goes with the <dtml-var> tag. The "Value" part is what will actually show. In this case "Value" is the email address itself. So if I choose webmaster as the "Name" part, whenever I type <dtml-var webmaster>, the html that people will see shows myname(a)zope.org. Okay, I haven't saved any typing, you may think to yourself. If this little bit of of typing had to be done over 10 pages, or 100, then the power is clear. If the wemaster changes, then you only have to change the address of this person once. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE8kKcUAqKGrvVshJQRAtSUAKD0Mi3DfeaaG6PNP//ddf9daFrBfQCg40vq 7QQx4QAq37rFhtADZk3I1eM= =7leW -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Security Question
by Jonathan Bryant 15 Mar '02

15 Mar '02

Hi, I've been playing around with zope's users and roles to try and figure out a problem I have. I set up a test folder and created a subfolder. test/ test/folder1 I then create a dtml method called hello which reads: >>Hello <dtml-var "AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()" >! I give the method a proxy role of manager. In folder1/ I create a user called 'tester'. ('tester' is not a user in the parent folder test/) I the goto test/folder1/hello. Log in as tester and get the output >>Hello tester! When I got to test/hello, however I just get >>Hello Anonymous User! When I log in a manager 'jon' i get Hello jon! in both folders. It seems like if I use a proxy role for a method, and a user does not have permissions in that folder AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName() returns 'Anonymous User'. Is that correct? Thanks in advance for any help! mozilla multipart/form-data
by Bryan C. Andregg 15 Mar '02

15 Mar '02

Recent versions of mozilla appear to change how multipart/form-data is handled by the client when an input type=file is used. mozilla-0.9.2.1 and the two versions of netscape that I've tried apparently send all form data such that empty file fields are still seen as file objects to Zope. mozilla-0.9.9 sends data such that empty file fields are empty strings (such as a regular input type=text). This of course breaks Zope products that check file field uploads by using the _.len(request['file']).read() method. They'll need to be wrapped in an if statement now, I guess. Has anyone else seen this? I've talked to some mozilla people and their take is that mozilla was and still is doing the right thing. -- Bryan C. Re: [Zope] Subfolders in LocalFS
by Jeff Nielsen / UgoFast 15 Mar '02

15 Mar '02

Thierry, I'm not sure I can show you the light, but I might be able to give you an idea. I do a similar thing on my site. I store a path in a FSSession variable and access the files in it with the following syntax: <dtml-in "images[FSSession['LoginCompanyImagesPath']].fileIds()"> With this, I can access subdirectories several levels deep. Hope this helps. >I'm trying to get the content of a subfolder from a directory structure using LocalFS doing the following : ><dtml-in expr="Pictures['subfolder1']['subfolder2']['subfolder3'].fileItems()"> ><dtml-var id> ></dtml-in> >So far, everything looks fine... >The actual problem is that I'm not able to enter a subfolder defined in a variable way. It works out fine when >there is only one subfolder : ><dtml-call "REQUEST.set('location','Summer')"> ><dtml-in expr="Pictures[Summer].fileItems()"> ><dtml-var id> ></dtml-in> >but what to do if we need a subfolder's subfolder ? We can try typing : ><dtml-call "REQUEST.set('location','Summer/Vacation')"> ><dtml-in expr="Pictures[Summer].fileItems()"> ><dtml-var id> ></dtml-in> >to get the content of the Summer/Vacation folder... >But this fails in ZOPE ! Can someone show me the light please. Thanks, Thierry Jeff Nielsen / UgoFast http://www.UgoFast.com Jeff(a)UgoFast.com
