File I/O in Zope

Hi Everyone, I am fairly new to Zope and I need some assitance on something that I know is fundamental so please don't beat up on me too bad ;-) I am try to open a file with a Python Script in Zope for content manipulation. This is a text file, I basically want to read a number, operate on it and write it back out. However when I try to get my file handle I get; file=open("/home/chris/misernumber", "r+") Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: NameError Error Value: global name 'open' is not defined I tried creating the file as a Zope object but I get the same error. Again I know this is fundamental. If ya'll can help me with this, or at least point me to some documentation it would be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Best way to do "links"
by Oliver Bleutgen 12 Nov '01

Hi, I am unsure how to achieve the following in a product: I have a folder with templates which shall be used to render articles. This folder will be the central repository of templates for all articles which find it in their acquisition path. Now, I want be able to dynamically assign (and change) templates for a given article, and if I edit one template it should reflect in all articles which are configured to use that template. In http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/2001-May/011187.html Shane Hathaway describe hardlinks, which seem to do what I need. i.e. I then just do t = template_folder.one_template self.template = t I looked at how ZSQL-methods solve that problem (usage of SQLConnections), and as far as I can see ZSQL-methods just store the id of the ZSQL connection and use that everytime they need to access the DB. Is that right and if so, why is it done that way? Doesn't give that a performance hit? And the last one: Will the above described method still allow import/export these instances? cheers, oliver

[announce] ColorViewer tool & example
by Mitchell L Model 12 Nov '01

12 Nov '01

http://www.zope.org/Members/mlm/Utilities/ColorViewer is an interactive color chart that displays hex triples (for example, 36F) and the color they represent. The problem addressed is that there are 256**3 of these, far too many to display on a page. The solution is to let the user choose which of the three primaries to "fix" and at what value; the 256 colors with that primary having that value are then displayed in a 16x16 grid. In addition to being a useful and novel (I think -- please email me links pointing to similar configurable color displays if you know of others) this DTML method demonstrates a number of DTML techniques, which it lists below its color chart. Enjoy!

Actually, I got another hint on that one already. I should surround news with double quotes, and then it works fine. The code looks like this then: <dtml-with "news"> ... </dtml-with> Thanks anyway... Maybe overkill. But you can use syndication. Squishdot syndicates the headings via rdf/rss, you can import the headlines via the RDFSummary-Product. you need to do something like "make clean" first or manually delete all .o and .so files within the MySQLDB directories. jens P.S.: please keep this on the mailing list so that other people can benefit from it, too. Accessing postings outside the SquishDot instance
by Pieter Claerhout 12 Nov '01

12 Nov '01

Hi all, I'm having a little problem with SquishDot. I'm using SquishDot on my site to maintain the news items. So, I'm having an instance of SquishDot in the root of my Zope install, which I called "news". All works fine, but now I'm trying to figure out how to access the information from the SquishDot instance from for example my root index_html file. I want to get a list of all the headings, and who posted them so that I can show them on the front page of my site. I tried with: <dtml-with news> <dtml-in item_list> <a name="<dtml-var id>" href="<dtml-var URL1 ><dtml-var thread_path>/<dtml-var id>/" ><dtml-var title></a> Posted by <a href="mailto:<dtml-var email>" ><dtml-var author></A> on <dtml-var date_posted> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> but that didn't seem to work. I get a key error on item_list. What I think happens it that a SquishDot instance doesn't understand the dtml-with stuff. Any suggestions on how to get around this? Cheers, Pieter

Hi Jacob Can you please type python and then show us the output... I suspect that it may not be the version you think it is :-) Jacob Singh wrote: > This is the scenario, when trying to re-run the setup script for > MySQLDB: > And this is running from the correct python version. Re: [Zope] Adding users using own forms
by Oliver Erlewein 12 Nov '01

Hi I can't see anythig odd on the first glance. But have you checked the rights? The user calling the function must have the right to manage users in the acl_user! Normally you have to use proxy roles. Hope that helps. I have an external function. Maybe that helps... def insert_user_online(self, acl, name, roles=[], domains=[]): """ by Oliver Erlewein """ from AccessControl.User import User from string import strip import sys try: user = acl.data[name] msg = 'WARNING: User exists! No action taken.' except: if check_name(name) == 'OK': try: passwort = 'putpasshere' acl.data[name] = User(name, passwort, roles, domains) msg = 'Login: ' + name + ' Passwort: ' + passwort except: msg = 'ERROR: acl.data Call!' else: msg = 'ERROR: Only printable Characters!' return msg Regards Oliver -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net

sorry, repost of can't get MysqL working with zope, help me please

So here is what I have tried: I installed the Python-MySQLDB mod, but was using an old version of python, then I upgraded python and re-installed it. then I banged my head against the wall trying to figure out how to use my python executable and not Zope's. Finnally figured that out (basically undocumented) So then ZMySQLdb showed up as functional but gave the following message and restarted the server whenever I tried to use it: WARNING: Python C API version mismatch for module _mysql: This Python has API version 1010, module _mysql has version 1007. I have no idea what this means, so I tried making a symlink between a directory in my lib/python and lib/python2.1 directories to the directory containing the Python-MySQLdb .so file and using the Zope provided interpreter (to no avail). It can't find the module. I think one of my problems may also lie in that I don't know how to uninstall the old python, I didn't really upgrade, I just installed the new one and overwrote the python executable, with the new one, I know this probably wasn't too smooth, but this is a learning process. NEway, any help would be GREATLY appreciated. And if any Zope Dev's are reading this. PLEASE make MySQL and PostGRES connectivity standard with any Zope installation. Thank you Jacob Singh
