The same idea works for Squid or any other proxy, by the way. We use Squid instead of Apache for proxy, load-blancing, and URL rewrite services in front of our Zope servers, and we had to do this as well in our applications. Issues with frequently changing object properties

Hi, Can someone clarify the good and bad with having an object property which changes often. i.e. Say a property used as a counter to record votes in a poll, or calls on an object to be displayed. I understand the bad part of a frequently changing property is it bloats the Zope data.fs (I assume this is caused by keeping a record for the Zope undo feature?). Are the only solutions to this issue: 1. Automate and pack the database daily (Is there reliability issues with this with corruptions more likely etc? ) Is this a common solution Zopists use? If so, what regular interval is the norm for packing? 2. Store any regularly changing value such as a counter in an external db like mysql (Which isn't very practical if you are talking lots of objects doing the same thing) Thanks for any info you can provide to clarify what I should be doing. One big Zope or many small Zopes? Or perhaps a ZEO?

We ( a newspaper site) are currently running several different Zope installations for different vertical products--one install for our Homes Listings, for instance, and another for our big news content site, and a couple of testing and development installs. The sites share many of the same elements--both look-and-feel stuff as well as various navigation methods, etc. Does it make sense for us to combine all of these sites into one installation so we can centralize the shared site elements, or should we keep multiple sites for performance's sake? We're weighing the issues of doing some sort of XML-RPC resource sharing or just lumping everything together under one domain and one Zope installation. Also, we're running at traffic somewhere around 60,000-80,000 page views a day--not huge traffic, but more than we had a year ago, certainly. At what traffic point have most folks noticed a need for more server power? Is it 100,000 page views? More? Less? We are also serving ads to the Zopes from a different Windows 2000 server running Apache and using a PERL process to serve the ads at a rate of between 400,000 and 700,000 ads per day. We've got a pretty Zopish site--lots of method calls, lots of ZSQL (connected to MySQL), lots of graphics and buttons all in Zope and reliance on the Catalog for index building and such. We're on a single non-Zeo install for our "big site" right now on a Win2k box, and we're having some slowness issues cropping up at times. We've had some bigger Windows/Zope/Apache problems in the past, so we're already preparing for a move to Linux (plus that seems to be where most of the community and certainly where Zope Corp. is focusing--though I'm a big fan of MacZope, personally...) We're wondering whether we should be considering a ZEO move at this time, too. And now would be a good time for us to combine our "satellite sites" under one umbrella. Any opinions? Security tab

Hi. My current Zope 2.4.1 install with CMF, Formulator, psycopg, ordered folder etc., has about 140 permissions on the security tab (manage_access). This is a HUGE problem in so many ways. Has anyone thought of a solution to this? /Magnus

Zope email capabilities?

I'm interested in Zope's email capabilitites, both incoming and outgoing. I imagine it's probably straightforward (e.g. there are some classes somewhere) for me to send an outbound email from my Zope application. However, I'm particularly curious about a way to accept and process inbound email. Specifically, I'm considering building a basic customer service application. Each Zope user will have a private folder, and whenever a user sends email to, say, "support(a)myzopeserver.com", I'd like for zope to store the user's email message in their Zope folder. I will probably wrap this inside of my own ZClass, so that I can add properties like "status" to indicate whether or not one of my staff has replied to the customer in regards to the given message. Ultimately I'll build some workflow around it. Thoughts would be appreciated. Bryan

HELP! Misunderstanding of permissions?

Hello everyone, In First Place, I hope that someone answer my questions this time. Im very disappointed with this list, because people spend time discussing things like if zope is good or not good and do not answer simple questions of people that is trying to learn how to use zope in a simple way. I need help on something that seems pretty strange to me: I'm developing a product in python, and everything its working fine, except that when i try to access any object of type File, i get an Unauthorized Error. Any other object that i try to access works fine. I tried to move the file object out of my Custom object, and then i can access it without any problem.
