PCGI Error: (102) failure during connect to ZServer
by Artur Mozdzynski 26 Aug '01

26 Aug '01

I have installed Zope-2.1.2-5.i386.rpm and Zope-pcgi-2.1.2-5.i386.rpm on RedHat Linux When I try to invoke pcgi script from a web browser I get this: Temporarily Unavailable The resource you requested is temporarily unavailable - please try again later. C-Runtime errno: Connection refused PCGI Error: (102) failure during connect to ZServer Explanation: The PCGI-wrapper program, spawned by Apache to handle the HTTP request via the standard CGI protocol, is unable to connect to the ZServer background process via Unix socket /tmp/pcgitest.socket. I think it's a common problem, but I couldn't resolve it myself nor find any troubleshooting for this. What shall I do? Hi Jean, First of all, please send your Zope questions to the Zope(a)zope.org mailinglist (info abaout the lists at http://www.zope.org/Resources/MailingLists) not to zope-admin(a)zope.org. The traceback you sent me, indicates that the zCommerce product is missing a dependency, called 'Session'. You may want to check the documentation for that Product (I am not familiar with it). You get the error because it is not installed. mysterious dataloss clues?
by Martijn Faassen 26 Aug '01

26 Aug '01

Hi there, I'm posting this in the hope someone will be able to help me with some mysterious data lossage we've been experiencing. I basically am completely clueless what could be the cause of this, so any hint would be useful. Some boring numbers first: We have an application running on Zope 2.3.0, connecting to Postgresql 7.0 using ZPoPyDA 1.2. The version of PoPy is 2.0.2. This is on Debian 2.2 (with some upgraded packages such as Postgresql). Now to the meat of the issue: For some reason, at random times, Postgresql seems to magically lose some records that were already there and should've been committed. This seems to happen within a few hours of the time the records were first created. All trace of the records disappears from the database; we can see the holes in the autoincrement primary key fields (and we never do any delete ourselves that could cause this). The lossage seems internally consistent; a bunch of records that's interrelated all disappears. The records disappearing are not all part of a single Zope transaction; instead there are bunch of ZSQL insert operations in a set of pages. It's just as if there's some kind of long running transaction that at some point magically expires. Very weird. We haven't been able to reproduce the problem; it just seems to happen. Vaguely associated with it is another, possibly related problem; occasionally Zope does not see a record with an id that is definitely in the database. After a few more tries, it works again. We haven't been able to confirm a firm temporal relationship between this problem and the one described, but it's possible one somehow affects the other. Is it possible that due to some strange interaction postgresql's transaction machinery ends up in some flakey state, so that something is never committed that really should be? I'm now trying to change all the tires and the engine as well; upgrading this and that to see if the problem will go away. But some clues in which direction I should search would be greatly appreciated. Anyone ever saw something like this? I really wish I could be more specific. :) Regards, Martijn

Namespace question
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 25 Aug '01

I have an object with a built-in method (called "check_id") for determining whether the value from a retrieved object has the same id as one of the elements in the current object's lines property. What I want to do is make an edit form that has a <SELECT> element with a complete list of object id's of a given type (meta_type = 'Doctrine') and compare each of those id's to the id's stored in the current object's lines property. If there is a match, I want the <OPTION SELECTED> statement written. Otherwise, it would be simply <OBJECT>. Note, the Doctrine object has (of course) an id. The lines property has a list of id's that are subsets of the total number of Doctrine objects. Here is the code... <SELECT NAME="doctrines:list" SIZE="5" MULTIPLE> <dtml-in "objectValues('Doctrine')"> <dtml-if "check_id(sequence-item.id)"> <OPTION VALUE="<dtml-var id>" SELECTED><dtml-var title></OPTION> <dtml-else> <OPTION VALUE="<dtml-var id>"><dtml-var title></OPTION> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> </SELECT> The question that I have is that <dtml-if "check_id(sequence-item.id)"> doesn't work. Any hints as to what the problem might be? TIA, Ron

zope as databasefrontend?
by Ralf Duda 25 Aug '01

25 Aug '01

Hello, maybe I'm on the way against the zope internal philosophy ... We use a postgresql Database and MS Access :( as frontends. Now we would like to use zope as frontend and skip Access. The Access applications are quit simple but depents on a rather complex permission structure, realized in postgresql. Now to zope ----------- One way is to create a zope connection with the highest access permissions on the database. Now if a user logged in, a script checked out what the user is allowed to do (maybe with complex SQL statements and special database rows). :( In my opinion a better way would be: A user logged in and then the database connection would be established, with the username/password and of course the right database permissions. This connection should be open until the user logout. :) I haven't found any hind on this kind of connection. (Late database connection) In general, is it possible to do it? Must it realized it completely in a extra phyton script? (sounds complicated) Or is there maybe any example, which I had not found? o) Thank's for any help! best regards, Ralf Duda

Advice needed: load balancing wih ZEO and Apache on Solaris.
by Tony McDonald 25 Aug '01

25 Aug '01

Hi, I've followed the instructions at <http://www.zope.org/Members/dshaw/AdvancedSiteSetup> to set up a ZEO server and client (on the same machine). These instructions are very clear and I'd recommend them to people wanting to experiment with ZEO. We serve our content up through Apache (fast delivery of static content, CGI scripts and PHP4 served too). I'm using the VHM method of routing Apache requests through to my ZServer installation so (only a snippet shown, and this is an example); RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/cgi-bin - [L] RewriteRule ^/static - [L] RewriteRule ^/ltsn_images - [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://localhost:18080/VirtualHostBase/http/myserver.ncl.ac.uk:80/VirtualHos tRoot/$1 [P] Following the instructions from Dave Shaws' page I have a ZEO server running on port 8080 and a client running on port 8081 One idea I've had from reading the Apache Rewrite rules page at <http://httpd.apache.org/docs/misc/rewriteguide.html> Is to use ProxyPassReverse (in some way), i.e. ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8080/ ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8081/ My question is this; What can I do to get requests from myserver.ncl.ac.uk farmed out to my ZEO server-client farm? Any pointers would be really appreciated. Weird CatalogAware behavior re: metadata?
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 25 Aug '01

25 Aug '01

I have a python product that has a class derived from CatalogAware and SimpleItem. I programmatically add instances of these (1000s of them) on an automated basis every day in the early morning. My problem is that whenever I do this, the Catalog is updated with some problems: 1 - Metadata is skewed: DateTime objects are cataloged, and they end up with the wrong date ('2001/01/01') instead of today's date, even though the actual property. 2 - Text indexes only get a portion of their text stored in the metadata, not all of it. Using a bulk reindex solves this problem (subtransaction off, haven't tried it any other way). I'm using Zope 2.3.2 with ZEO 1.0b3. The automated process queries SQL for data, and uses those queries to create object instances of the previously mentioned catalog-aware class, and I create anywhere from 2000-7000 objects at a time. I'm not sure if this is due to the size of the transaction I am running. I haven't tried this in a smaller transaction yet; I was wondering if anyone else has seen this. Any thoughts?
