rambling: zope in two minutes!

hello all. this is a rant. feel free to press the Del key :) nb - i havent installed phpnuke or codecharge. I looked at Php-nuke (http://www.php-nuke.org) and codecharge (http://www.codecharge.com) and saw something familiar. i see Squishdot in phpnuke, and maybe ZNolkSQLWizard in codecharge. the only difference isthat those applications (the former) are made for non-developers, or designers (i think) who dont want to dirty their hands, and burden their shoulders with any programming, but want a site in 2 minutes (or less :)) this is a section of market that zope can target. as said earlier, we can make squishdot more customizable, skinnable, etc without touching any codes. iirc, squishdot does have two themes available. codecharge connects to rdb, and churnes out codes. the same as ZnolkSqlWizard. the only thing is, with codecharge, we can customize by filling in forms, and voila, a site is born. this may be oversimplifying a bit. ZnolkSqlWizard churnes out codes. but then we need to hand code stuff. we could extend both squisdot and ZnolkSqlWizard to compete in this section. an easy to install and administer product, no coding needed, up in 2 minutes :) you know, i see some apps on the web, and think - zope can do that! sorry for wasting bandwidth, etc etc

OK. My best guess is that Zope uses mime types to do this, but that is a wild guess. LocalFS - how to display objects?
by Mark Langkau 29 Jun '01

29 Jun '01

Hi, I'd like to display folders and files in a LocalFS object as a list of links (NOT using the default display method form LocalFS), where I can click on a folder to see more files, or click on a file and have it displayed. Files will be either html or pdf files. I also want to use a dtml method called index_html to display this. Here's the usual way I do this with standard Zope objects: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <ul> <dtml-in expr="objectValues(['Folder', 'File'])"> <li><a href="&dtml-absolute_url;"><dtml-var title_or_id></a></li> </dtml-in> </ul> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> How do I enhance this to "also" work with LocalFS objects that will be nested inside regular Zope folders? I see that in LocalFS objectValues become fileValues, and I can get them to be listed, but I can't seem to turn that into a list of hyperlinks. A code snippet from someone who is doing this would be great! We will be uploading lots of files via ftp to the Zope server. We briefly looked at ExtFile, and like the idea, but didn't see how to create an ExtFile object via ftp upload. A remote server will create a file and automatically via cron ftp it to the Zope server to the local filesystem to be used via LocalFS. Is there a way to do this with ExtFile without human intervention? ;-) Of course, I have to do this in a hurry so I'm probably reading right past the obvious answer in the docs. I just can't seem to put it together this morning ;-) Thanks, Mark

Newsyslog
by Daniel Fairs 29 Jun '01

29 Jun '01

Hi, I'm using newsyslog to turn over the Zope logfile. However, I have to restart Zope each time the log gets turned over. Is there any way of getting around this? Or should I just buy a bigger drive? ;) Cheers, Dan _________________________________________________________________ Daniel Fairs | daniel.fairs(a)spiderplant.net | www.spiderplant.net

Mailform & Sendmail
by Tapio Hüffner 29 Jun '01

29 Jun '01

Hi guys, I want to create a sendmail-Method which works with several forms. For that I want to list the variables and their values independent from each form. <dtml-var "REQUEST.form"> works, but the output is: {'comments': 'my comment', 'name': 'my name'}. What I would like to see is: comments: my comment name: my name' but I don't want to create for each form a sendmail-Method which includes: comment: <dtml-var comments> Name: <dtml-var name> My idea was something like <dtml-in "REQUEST.form"> <dtml-var name>: <dtml-var value> </dtml-in> but REQUEST.form isn't a sequence!? I guess this is an easy question. Thank you in advance, Tapio

Making sure all users are authenticated
by David Goodenough 29 Jun '01

29 Jun '01

I should preface this question with a little background. I come from a Lotus Domino world where all users are authenticated (not the web interface which allows anonymous but the client interface). I need to do something similar in a Zope environment, that is to say that I want to be sure that all users have authenticated themselves and that the scripts can find out who they are, but I do not want to make them Managers or Owners. I suppose that the answer to this is to create a new role (say "User") and make sure that all the users are enroled in that role and then only allow users with that role to view the objects that I wish to control in this manner. I am relatively new to Zope, and have read the manual, but I am none the wiser either as to whether this is the right approach, or as to how I go about adding such a new role and then how I add such a security filter so that only users with this role can access the objects, there only seems to be controls for Anonymous, Manager and Owner.

Re: Oracle Error Messages
by Chris McDonough 29 Jun '01

29 Jun '01

Ricardo, Yes, I think you can only catch all exceptions or a string exception with dtml-try... I would suggest catching them all with <dtml-try><dtml-except> (although I know you claim it doesn't work). I can't help you much here if you're having problems any further than what's in the docs, I only use DTML in the simplest presentation code, never anything that requires a <dtml-try>. If you can't get <dtml-try> to work I might suggest using an external method instead of a DTML method, importing the error class into it from DCOracle and catching that in the place where the error occurs. - C PS - I am cc'ing the Zope list on this message.. if possible, please send further questions to the list... thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: Ricardo Seghizzi To: Chris McDonough Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 12:21 PM Subject: Oracle Error Messages Hi Chris, I created a website that connect to an Oracle 8.0 DB. My web application is working fine. I created a web application that access a external DB in only 2 weeks! And during this period I as learning Zope and DTML as well. Not to bad... Zope is wonderfull... When my application runs and access the Database if an error occurs the oracle error will be displayed on the page. I wold like to know how could I catch the error and handle the error message to give something more understandable for my end users? I try to use <dtml-try> and <dtml-exepcion> but I didn't manage to make it work. Do you kown how this cold be done? Regards' Ricardo
