> From: complaw(a)hal-pc.org [mailto:complaw@hal-pc.org] > Has anyone seen something like that for Zope or know where to begin? The easiest would probably be to write a recursive Python Method something like this. Absolutely untested ! def collect(result=''): # get all text from this level for dtml_method in contex.objectValues('Dtml method'): result = result + dtml_method() # get all text from sublevels for folder in contex.objectValues('Folder'): result = folder.collect(result) return result then you just chose a folder and add 'collect' to the url and you should see a compund document:: http://localhost:8080/docRoot/collect Regards Max M

I just stumbled over the below in the archives: So apparantly I need to set a $STUPID_LOG_FILE. Any info as to where I can do this? Regards Max M -------------------------------------------------- View: Re: [Zope] Error when packing Data.fs "Chris McDonough" 05/14 07:45 PM Oh wait. Damn. I had this conversation last week. ;-) You're starting Zope through something like this: ./start & You then close the terminal window, and Zope's controlling terminal disappears.... Zope is trying to send output to stdout, but stdout is gone. You get the IOError. Instead of starting Zope this way, start Zope from a terminal that doesn't get closed. ------------------------------------------------- OK, thanks Garry... I'm going to treat this as an isolated error, where the solution is to not close the terminal window after you do "./start &" or alternately to use "nohup ./start &".

The 60% company can go away and they won't be > out of business. Thus that 40% is very important to them. And I guess that 10-20% of that 40% are again invested for marketing from companies like IBM or MS. So the VAR knows he doesn't really lose all the money he pays for the software, instead it's used to generate marketing pressure and other goodies (take Chris' "IBM certified for e-Business" example). They get nice developer conventions and other things, all of that is done to suggest a spirit of success and to show a common goal. All in all it might not be _that_ easy to persuade VARs to use OSS. > The customer doesn't realize: > 1) That open source makes that argument largely irrelevant. > But we don't really have the marketing muscle to fight this > battle, at least where it needs to be fought. > 2) That there are hundreds of consultants familiar with Zope/[insert > other open source solution here] that can take over that 100% > when the one who sold it to you goes out of business. This > is also a marketing problem. These two point are IMO only sufficient to get a tie in the battle zope vs [proprietary offering from MS/IBM] - if any, because for every zope consultant there are 100 (or 1000) notes/asp etc. consultants. > Grassroots, "line-level" employee support is most of the support that > open source has got, and that's its marketing engine. I think one has to differ the types of potential clients, and they are not always recognizable by the size of their company. 1. Nearly no technical knowledge, don't know words like "application server", know names like IBM or Microsoft, but only MS is more familiar because they use their desktop OS and office applications. Their motivation is to either a) Get their first web-presence b) Revamp their existing (static) web-presence because they think its to ugly and/or they want to get new functionality like putting in content by themselves. 2. Some IT knowledge, they have already a web-presence but got burned (their agency charges the big bucks for just changing telephone numbers), and are critical because of that. 3. Good IT knowledge, are able to do a lot by themselves, often just lack the time or design capabilities to do their own web presence. Only types 2 and 3 will question the choice of the underlying plattform. And it's often not the decision makers who will do that, but the IT personnel. And it helps a lot to first try to gain ground with the decision makers, because an open minded (because his boss told him to be open minded) IT expert can really be persuaded to see zope's strength. This gets me to the point of my drivel: What do others think of the idea of a glossy brochure (like 4 pages) which can be used as a handout about zope for decision makers? Nothing academic, just pure marketing speak. Heavy on buzzwords, short on (technical) information, but nice to look at. It should be downloadable from zope.org as a photoshop document, with layers etc. fully intact. Perhaps with some blank space (one page), so that everyone could include company specific information, perhaps not. Then everyone who wants to could just use that to produce zope-specific marketing material. Mind you, I don't want to say that DC should produce that, I guess more people in this list have graphic designers in their company. cheers, oliver

ZPT: ready for prime time?
by Dieter Maurer 25 Jun '01

25 Jun '01

Hello Zopistas, we are before a big redesign of our Zope Site http://www.european-e-business.com The complete Look&Feel will be changed and we will switch from the Zope oldie 2.1.6 to the latest Zope version. The GUI will be developed with DreamWeaver. We are currently facing the following decision: * do we use ZPT/XHTML for presentation or * do we stick with the familiar DTML The designer told us, he (and his tool) can handle both. Thus, it boilds down to: ZPT/XHTML DTML modern approach in the future, probably only investment in the future used in niches in flux, probably unstable stable, we know its strengthes/weaknesses maybe, missing features (e.g. batching) poor documentation quite well documented by now e.g. loop variables, TALES variables What are your experiences? What do you think? Dieter

I'm not very familiar with Zope yet. I think I should learn a little more first. Thank you. Mariusz

dtml-tree problems and/or bugs ?
by Stefan Radke 25 Jun '01

25 Jun '01

Hi ! The tree tag gives me two problems. The page I wrote basically has the follwing structure: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <h2><dtml-var title></h2> <table align=right cellpadding=0 cellspacing=2 width=280 hspace=20 bgcolor=red><tr><td width=100%> <table align=center cellspacing=0 cellpadding=4 width=100% bgcolor='#FFFFE8'><tr><td width=100%> <dtml-var sitetree></td></tr></table></td></tr></table> <dtml-var abstract fmt=structured-text> <dtml-if abstract><dtml-var login></dtml-if> <br clear='all'> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> The 'sitetree' is another DTML Method which renders the tree: <h3>Overview</h3> <a href="?expand_all=1">Expand All</a> | <a href="?collapse_all=1">Collapse All</a><hr size=1 noshade> <dtml-tree branches_expr="objectValues(['Folder'])" skip_unauthorized> <dtml-if "getProperty('title')!=''"><a href="<dtml-var tree-item-url>"><dtml-var title></a><dtml-else></dtml-if> </dtml-tree> All I want is a table of contents, appearing on the right hand of the page. Everything works fine, but: (1) when I select the 'Expand All' link, the page is rendered incomplete. For some reason, the standard_html_footer is not rendered. In Netscape this ends with the complete page not showing, because the closing tags at the page's end are missing :-( (2) Some of the folders have access restrictions. When I move the header, '<h2><dtml-var title></h2>' down below the tables encapsulating the tree, I get a login prompt. That means that Zope tries to retrieve the 'title' from another entity than the current folder, which is unrestricted. Looks like some variable(s) are lingering with values from the tree-tag operation. Has anybody experienced such results ? Thank you, Stefan.

In fact, they are good for IT people, but most decision makers wont understand them. Have a look at the Windows XP and Office XP marketing. It is the same content as it was for Windows 95, 98 and ME: They claim that you can connect to the internet (wow!) and that it is intuitive. No technical stuff and nothing new under the sun. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Using zope - how to host?
by Frank McGeough 25 Jun '01

25 Jun '01

I was wondering what people do for hosting Zope? I am helping out with a non-profit's web site. I'd like to use Zope to try to provide better/faster control by the 4-5 individuals providing content but how do I host the beast? The service that is hosting their static HTML pages now has never heard of Zope. I see a number of organizations listed on the zope.org web site that say they host Zope but was wondering if anyone on the mailing list has recommendations or suggestions.
