Please try to keep this stuff on the list.. thanks. I think having the if..else in custom_zodb.py is a recipe for total confusion. Remove the FileStorage stuff so that the custom_zodb.py file just reads: import ZEO.ClientStorage Storage=ZEO.ClientStorage.ClientStorage( os.path.join(INSTANCE_HOME, 'var', 'zeo.soc'), name="ZEO Storage", storage="1", ) That's it. Then start the ZEO server with the -U switch that points to the zeo.soc file as you did before, then start Zope via "start". - C Norman Khine wrote: > > Hello Chris, > This is what I have in my custom_zodb.py file > > import ZEO.ClientStorage > Storage=ZEO.ClientStorage.ClientStorage( > os.path.join(INSTANCE_HOME, 'var', 'zeo.soc'), > # If no name is given, then connection info will be shown: > name="ZEO Storage", > # You can specify the storage name, which defaults to "1": > storage="1", > ) > > else: > > # Default FileStorage > import ZODB.FileStorage > Storage=ZODB.FileStorage.FileStorage( > os.path.join(INSTANCE_HOME, 'var', 'Data.fs'), > ) > > I don't have an external storage database, I just want to try to understand > how it works before I try it out with external storage. > > Also I am using it all on the same machine -- both client and server. > > So, what will be the procedure of starting the ZEO client and Zope. > > Ta > > Norman > > -----Original Message----- > From: Chris McDonough [mailto:chrism@digicool.com] > Sent: Friday, June 08, 2001 3:39 PM > To: Norman Khine > Cc: Zope Mailing List > Subject: Re: [Zope] ZEO and Zope 2.4.0a1 help > > It appears that the Zope Book docs are wrong. hash and username variables
by Konstantinos Margaritis 08 Jun '01

08 Jun '01

Hi, I am a new user of zope, and I have some questions: a) how do I call hash on some text object. What I want to do is generate a text variable from an input form, then hash this and get a (hopefully) unique 32-bit integer number. I want to generate unique keys, as the text is unique, and the hash integer will much faster to pass around. I tried <dtml-call hash(text)> but it produces nothing. Do I have to do this in a python method? b) is there a variable that holds the current user's name? like <dtml-var username> but it doesn't work. PS. I tried searching the lists and on yahoo and on the tutorials and on the zopebook, but I didn't find much information on hash and dtml-call. So please I would appreciate some help on this.

Tuple unpacking in DTML
by Daniel Fairs 08 Jun '01

08 Jun '01

Hi, How do you unpack a tuple in DTML? I have a python method getEntries that returns a list of tuples. Each tuple is of the form: (doc_text, doc_title, doc_date) The list is generated with: for thisDoc in documents: docText = thisDoc.document_src() newText = string.replace(docText, '\n', '<br />') docSequence.append((newText, thisDoc.bobobase_modification_time())) I want to display this data using the following code: <dtml-in getEntries reverse> <dtml-let expr="sEntry,sTitle,oTime=_.getitem('sequence-item')"> <tr> <td><dtml-var oTime fmt=aCommon></td> <td><dtml-var title></td> <tr> <td valign="top" colspan="2"><dtml-var sEntry></td> </tr> </dtml-let> </dtml-in> However, Zope barfs whenever I try to save this, giving: Expression (Python) Syntax error: invalid syntax , for tag <dtml-let expr="sEntry,sTitle,oTime=_.getitem('sequence-item')">, on line 10 of contentPanel What am I doing wrong? Why can't I use the tuple unpacking syntax in DTML? Or am I going about this completely the wrong way? ;) I would just do a normal <dtml-var document> etc. to publish the date, but I want to replace all the newlines with <br /> tags. Many thanks, Dan _________________________________________________________________ Daniel Fairs | daniel.fairs(a)spiderplant.net | www.spiderplant.net

I'm not convinced that you've tried everything. An infinite number of monkeys with an infinite number of typewriters . . . I have a host on my intranet behind apache with mod-ssl. I connect to zserver (on port 8080) using mod_proxy. I have a Virtual Host Monster in my zope root. VHM rocks. I tried this with SiteRoots and it was always a pain. My virtualhost directives in httpd.conf are below: <VirtualHost caustic.wcg.williams.com:80> ServerAdmin troy.farrell(a)wcg.com ServerName caustic.wcg.williams.com ProxyPass / http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/caustic.wcg.willia ms.com:80/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPassReverse / http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/VirtualHostBase/http/caustic.wcg.willia ms.com:80/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/p_ ProxyVia on </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost caustic.wcg.williams.com:443> ServerAdmin troy.farrell(a)wcg.com ServerName caustic.wcg.williams.com ProxyPass / http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/VirtualHostBase/https/caustic.wcg.willi ams.com:443/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPassReverse / http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/VirtualHostBase/https/caustic.wcg.willi ams.com:443/VirtualHostRoot/ ProxyPass /misc_ http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/misc_ ProxyPass /p_ http://caustic.wcg.williams.com:8080/p_ ProxyVia on ErrorLog logs/caustic.log SSLEngine on SSLCertificateKeyFile /workspace/apache/conf/server2.key SSLCertificateFile /workspace/apache/conf/server.crt </VirtualHost> Let me know what other info you need. Follow the recent thread (yesterday?) from Sherwood about using the VHM - Virtual Host Monster. He appears to have mastered it and I know he has many sites on one Zope and there is no port listed on any of the public sites he takes care of. It can and is being done. RE: [Zope] Re: Andreesen must die...

Very good point. It's true that something done right the first time is better, and going to full nine yards to achieve the full goal instead of this century's Henry Ford'ism of de-engineering is admirable... But, remember that HTML as a standard was a hack to begin with. One big hack. A basis that came after the complexities of SGML and a possible solution to bringing ARPNET (its not my day, so did i get the lingo right?) to the mass it did. My point here is that Andressen's 'keep it simple stupid' rendering engine and MS's 'assume the worst about the HTML and render bloody anything' are both required steps towards something better. More to the original point, the masses standardized VHS tapes because they were cheaper to manufacture and cheaper to buy. Sony and Toshiba picked up on it right away. Mozilla gone Netscape was a bid for the computerized VHS against the Beta MS monster IE that we all see more than anything in our logs. These 'ill-concieved graphical features' are yours and my idea of a cover up over faulty implementation of a standard, or even lack there-of, but demographically, but its those features that rope the masses into pulling the stats for investors to steer there cool millions towards this guy instead of that. The user's dont care anyhow about a feature until Wired magazine or Howard Stern on the radio told them to. We just have to sit and wait for the dust to settle. All I'm saying is that the web experts will spurn the ideas to excel the web, the public will smash it down becuase they dont get it, and then years later another medio-bloke will regurgitate it and be the next George Nice. So in the meantime, though NS4 is usually my worst day-mare, it at least 'gives me some good ideas in the meantime to NOT do it that way the next'. -Edison. Good night Paz -----Original Message----- From: Matt Gushee [mailto:mgushee@havenrock.com] Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2001 11:07 PM To: Paz Subject: RE: [Zope] Re: Andreesen must die... Thus is life in a capitalist world. Not sure what your point is here. Are you saying that the general public likes the Web the way it is? Personally, I don't know too many people who find the Web user-friendly. Most of them use it in spite of, not because of, all the ill-conceived "features" that the browser vendors and in-love-with-their-own-hip-selves graphic designers have inflicted on us. Whereas if the browser makers had produced better products (i.e. less buggy and more standards compliant), that would give developers more time to create good user interfaces instead of spending all their time on compatibility kludges. I'm not sure they *would* create good UIs, just that they might be able to if they chose. Which would be a win-win situation, no? Matt Gushee
