Authentication/Validation & overriding exception responses patterns

Root acl_users --YourFolder --acl_users(e.g., LoginManager) So it seems to me that Zope's user validation mechanism has a "feature" ("flaw"): There is no way to unequivocally deny access or completely change the login behavior for a resource from within YourFolder's acl_users other than to raise an exception. This is because returning 'None' from within your validate method causes Zope to seek validation up the path. At best, such as when Zope's "standard" mechanism of user acquisition is what's desired here's what will happen: If there is user data in the cookie, and that user exists & is valid, the request will be validated by the higher level folder and the higher level folder's user's roles apply. That's standard Zope behavior, right? Acquisition If the cookie does not contain a validated user, the higher level folder will attempt authentication. This will be the ugly browser panel. If you DON'T return None then Zope assumes the request has been validated with that user. This is not the desired behavior either. Even staying out of the realm of python/product code, if you restrict the permissions of an object severly in YourFolder, and your acl_users folder wants to deny access based on these restricted permissions, what can it do? If it returns None, the user will get re-authenticated higher up. If it returns a user, the page will be displayed. I have nothing against exceptions per-se, except that they seem to circumvent the "natural" progression of events within the Zope server. E.g., transactions and other request/response handling gets co-opted. Aren't there situations where it would be valid to engage in certain server side interactions --even though-- the requested page was forbidden or the user unknown? So, if raising an exception is simply the accepted means of handling this type of situation, then I have a few more questions: (1) What is the accepted pattern for overidding HTTPResponse's exception() code? I see that the original LoginManager code swizzles the unauthorize() function pointer, is that what I should do to change exception handling too? (2) How do people typically make sure that "pretty" exception pages are displayed to users? Is the accepted paradigm to put a <dtml-try> wrapper in the standard-html_header/standard-html_footer? [newbie] problems with konqueror browser

i'm having problems using the konqueror browser. whenever i have to tasks in zope, zope has to ask for frequent re-authentications. i also can't do some tasks like deleting, or renaming folders though i can make one. these problems don't occur with netscape. i like using konqueror, but are there any issues with zope and konqueror that i should know? I tried this, but it works differently, it changes the calling DTML method's title instead of the container folder. But, it doesn't seem to want to access the xronDTMLMethod's (called UserEvent_TEST) title. Problem with passing objects from External Methods

Hi Jason, This turned out to be a bug in Zope's ClassSecurityInfo implementation. A fix has been checked in to the release (http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-checkins/2001-April/005941.html) You can either patch your current release or wait for 2.3.2... I tested your method against the fix and it works... ZCatalog: linking to directory not file in directory?

Hi there, One of my colleagues has just come to me with a ZCatalog problem which I don't know how to solve. Fundamentally, we want to be able to catalogue the site so that for files with a certain name ("content_html"), the ZCatalog entries should link to the directory containing the file, not the file itself. Here's the situation: * The site has just one "index_html" at the site root, which contains a <dtml-var content_html> tag. * Every directory in the site contains a "content_html" DTML Method which contains that directory's desired contents. * So, a call to http://site/foo/ involves acquiring index_html from the site root directory, and then inserting foo's content_html into that. The problem is that when cataloging the site, we get lots of links like /foo/content_html, /bar/content_html, etc., when what we really want are /foo/, /bar/, etc., or maybe even /foo/index_html, /bar/index_html - if you see what I mean. :-) Unfortunately neither my colleague nor myself knows how to do this, or even if it's possible. There is a rather kludgy solution if you host Zope behind another web server such as Apache, which is to apply a naming convention to web callable methods and non-web methods. For example, if you arrange for all URLs to be lowercased (not the query string), and include at least one capital letter in any non-web method, but none in web accessible methods. This would only work of course if the administrators can bypass the web server and go straight to Zope.
