Mental disconnect help: Zope objects vs. Python objects in ZODB
by andres＠corrada.com 19 Jan '01

19 Jan '01

Hello, I'm designing a large e-commerce site with Zope. In the process I have also designed an object API for the site. My problem is that I can't bridge my conception of ZODB as a database for Zope objects and my conception of ZODB as a container for Python objects. For the latter case I'm thinking of AMK's ZODB/ZEO repackaging. For example, I want to create a Python class for a Product object and store the instances in the ZODB. I have looked at ZClasses and they don't seem to support data structures that I'm comfortable with in Python like dictionaries. Am I being dense in this mental disconnect and is it just trivial to write Python scripts that create objects in the ZODB and have Zope dtml calls that access the attributes in these objects? ------------------------------------------------------ Andres Corrada-Emmanuel Email: andres(a)corrada.com ------------------------------------------------------

This may be the link you were thinking of: http://www.omg.org/technology/documents/formal/corba_business_specifications _av2.htm with the Corba Workflow Specification available as a .PDF. > Thanks for the interesting URLs on workflow discussions. > > Corba Ecommerce has very interesting and thorough models of workflows, > including UML diagrams and even an XML format for defining state machines. > Sorry, this may be old news as I don't have time to follow up the actual > threads > beyond the first messages. > > But if not, anyone designing such a system for Zope *must* study the Corba > stuff. > > Email me direct if the URLs haven't been published in the discussions and > I'll be happy to dig them up (hard to find within www.omg.org) Or, (easier > for me), I can email the (large) .pdf files direct. > I also know that WfMC (Workflow Management Coalition, www.wfmc.org) > has adopted many of OMG's workflow concepts in the past. Yes, we all wish we were on *N[UI]X. However the question was "How do we shut this thing down?" Using ThroughTheWeb(TTW) scripting: http://usernamewithabilitytoshutdownzope:password@zopeserver:8080/Control_Pa nel/manage_shutdown adjust the portnumber to match your server. You can do this with just about anything. Those ZopeBook blasphemers even showed that MSWord could be used to script Zope: http://www.zope.org/Members/michel/ZB/ScriptingZope.html Last example. Most people would use something like wget. :) If you want to use a python script (not to be confused with PythonScript), look at zclient: http://www.zope.org/Members/lstaffor/ZClientMethod Troy -----Original Message----- From: Chris Withers [mailto:chrisw@nipltd.com] Sent: Friday, January 19, 2001 11:00 AM To: Dimitris Andrakakis Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Shut down zope from python script Dimitris Andrakakis wrote: > > Another thing: I'd consider running Zope+Apache on > NT workstation or 2000 professional, even for test > purposes. RE: [Zope] searching names in a query

Jacintha, This is from the Gadfly SQL support page at: http://www.chordate.com/kwParsing/gfSQL.html ***** Some important omissions from ODBC 2.0 at this point are Nulls. Outer joins. CHECK conditions. Enforced data type constraints. Alter table (can't implement until NULLs arrive). Date, Time, and Interval data types It is hoped these will be implemented at some future time. Less important omissions include Cursor based updates and deletes (justification: if you really need them the db design is flawed, and it's possible to use python instead). LIKE string predicate (justification: use Python regexes in python code). Users and permissions (justification: Gadfly is not intended for full multiuser use at this time). ***** Note that Gadfly does not support LIKE. They suggest that you use regexes in python code. I may be totally wrong, but in order to do this, you must use external methods. Anyone know better? Is there any other way by which when give half name all the names related to that should be displayed. eg. *abc* abcde efabcthy Thanks, jacintha _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

Hi Nicolas, > For you, when would such products be considered ready for production ? The most important factor can be viewed from two perspectives, neither precluding the other. The ideal state arrives when complete documentation is available, or at least one person on the deployment team has dug through the source code enough to inderstand the system thoroughly, and serve as a guide and mentor to others. Waiting for complete documentation sounds like a name for a surrealist/existentialist play for geeks. You may be in a fairly good position to benefit from input from the the creators of the ZDP Tools. Maik? Shut down zope from python script
by Richard Blumberg 19 Jan '01

19 Jan '01

I'm a newbie, running zope and apache on my win98 box, trying to learn enough to start using zope in a production environment. Windows slows down dramatically if I leave it running more than a couple of days, so I'm working on a python script that will shut everything down and reboot at a convenient hour every two days. My question is, how do I manage an orderly shutdown of the zope server from a python script running on the same machine? All help will be appreciated. Richard

workflow, gdchart
by Klaus Herrmann 19 Jan '01

HI *! I have 2 questions on Zope: (1) I need a configurable workflow management (who approves documents, who may delete documents, emails send to supervisors etc, all configurable) for Zope. are there any useable products available or do i have to learn python (seems to be a good idea anyway) and implement something like this myself? (2) Is there any documentation out there for gdchart-0.5? i installed the demo but the interesting parts are broken (at least they appear to be), so i can't figure out how it all works :-( any tutorials, how-tos, reference docs etc.? please CC messages to my address as i'm not acually subscribed to the list. thanks in advance! regards, Klaus -- Klaus Herrmann <klaus.herrmann(a)goelz.com> Goelz & Schwarz GmbH, Munich www.goelz.com phone:+49 - (0)89 - 544 67 0 22 fax: +49 - (0)89 - 544 67 0 10

Building ZPatterns Extension help
by J. Atwood 19 Jan '01

19 Jan '01

The instructions in the README.txt and on zope.org are a little vague.. How, indeed, do I " build this extension using the included Setup file in the ZPatterns directory" I can see the Setup file but that is about it. I would be more than happy to write up some documentation (on Zope.org) if someone sends me the answer. Thanks, J
