DTML tags
by David Trudgett 01 Jun '00

I was just wondering why the new style dtml tags don't seem to follow the XML standard. For example, <dtml-var standard_html_header> can't be written as: <dtml-var name="standard_html_header"/> or: <dtml-var name="standard_html_header"></dtml-var> This seems to me (ignorant as I currently am of Zope's internals) an unnecessary restriction. My speculation is not entirely idle. It would pave the way, for instance, to enabling end-users to utilise an XML editor to manage content, or allow specialised XML-enabled applications to output DTML content. Can anyone throw any light on this? Thanks. David Trudgett

Re: [Zope] Proposal for mail-in to Zope

Hi ! Simon Coles wrote: > Does this sound like what people need? I wanted to define this as a Task for the ZDP-Tools, but I only made some research into this, so I hope this helps in any way... Greetings, Maik Röder Mailbag It would be nice to have a Mailing list tracker on the ZDP site, where all messages, which are sent to all of the Zope mailing lists are kept. The messages could then be used for searching on specific topics, and could also be directly reused when new pieces of documentation are written. Reusing pieces of documentation right now means to track the mailing lists, using your own mail reader, or going to one of the online Mailing list trackers like egroups, and then cutting and pasting the message into your documentation. Just taking over content is not nice without giving credit to the original author. It is also not very user-friendly because much of the discussion, which has been surrounding the posting in the original discussion thread is simply lost. The original thread can be very useful for ZDP visitors, who may want to have a look at it when they see it quoted. Right now, giving a pointer to the original post is hard, because you can not be sure whether the site you are pointing to always keeps the URL, or for what is worse, even disappears. We need to be sure that a quoted message along with it's thread still exists in the future. We don't have enough space on the ZDP site to keep the whole Zope mailing lists, and so we are planning to digest the incoming mails only for a certain period of time. Afterwards, the mails will be deleted if they haven't appeared in a thread that has been quoted. We don't have the ressources to update the Mailing List Tracker everytime a mail is sent to a mailing list. So, to quote a mail, we need to manually upload all mails which have been written to that list since the last update. We also need to update threads to which new mails have been posted in the meantime. We also lack a tool for uploading messages to the Zope site. We could extend the Mailbag product by Tres Seaver which uses the Python 'rfc822' and 'mailbox' modules to parse messages and mailboxes. Lately, Tres Seaver has rewritten Mailbag, refactoring the logic into Python classes. The corresponding ZClasses for the presentation layer still have to be rewritten, but can possibly be taken over from the previous Mailbag version. To get the mail into Zope, a program needs to be written that calls Mailbag via ZClient when a mail arrives. Another type of program could be useful for importing existing Mailboxes into Zope. For delivery, an MDA like procmail could spawn a program out of a .forward file and ask it to upload the mail to a Zope folder according to a predefined set of recipies. There exists a Python program called getmail which takes mail from a POP3 server and delivers it into a mailbox. The delivery part of this program uses a getmailrc which could be used instead of the procmail recipies. Once the mail is in a local installation on a ZDP members own Zope server, it is easy to export the email and upload it to the ZDP site. From there, the ZDP members can quote the message easily by directly pointing to the URL. This way, we may not get a complete mail archive, but at least we can always be sure that the quoted mails and their surrounding thread exist. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Open Source is "about being able to work together with people you've never met, on projects that are in a constant state of flux, on a time schedule that would cause a hummingbird's head to spin." Good HTML editor to use with Zope?
by Andrew Wilcox 31 May '00

31 May '00

I have some non-technical colleagues who want to learn how to create their own web pages. Naturally I'd like to host them under Zope! They are using Windows 98. Are there any wysiwyg editors out there that would manage not to mangle an embedded <dtml-var> tag? Thanks! Andrew

<dtml-expr> second thoughts
by Kevin Dangoor 31 May '00

31 May '00

A couple days ago, I sent a message proposing that creating a <dtml-expr> tag could eliminate a lot of the confusion that new Zope users face. It seems that almost every new Zope user gets hung up on the difference between <dtml-var foo> and <dtml-var "foo">. It just now occurred to me that creating <dtml-expr "foo"> does not solve the problem, because there are still <dtml-if "foo"> and <dtml-in "foo">. While I am certainly in favor of keeping expressions in DTML, it looks like <dtml-expr> is not a good way to eliminate the confusion for new users. Perhaps the best thing is to just make sure that the introductory docs cover that topic very well. Kevin http://www.byproducts.com - Humor and Novelties

mailhost problem
by Mike Mikkelsen 31 May '00

Hello all, I have zope 2.1.6 and the following code returns an smtp error 553 (domain name required): <dtml-in select_Get_Account> (the select statement *is* returning the correct account) <dtml-sendmail mailhost="MailHost"> To: <dtml-var account> From: <do_not_reply@somebodycom> Subject: Mailing Back Password Your password is <B><dtml-var passwd></B>. Thank you for shopping at sombody! </dtml-sendmail> Your password has been mailed to <dtml-var account>. <dtml-else> blah blah blah </dtml-in> When checking the mail logs, the smtp server is getting no From or To information. If I use "mailfrom" in the dtml-sendmail tag, I get smtp error 503 (receipt required). Any ideas? -- Mike Mikkelsen mikk(a)microbsys.com Micro Business Systems http://microbsys.com Fresno Linux Users Group http://linux.fresno.ca.us It's all GNU to me!

HomeSite Question
by Luis Cortes 31 May '00

Hi, I'm trying HomeSite HTML Editor - which is really slick for somethings. I was wondering if there was some easy way to turn off the mangling of dtml tags when switching between design view and edit view??? Thanks ahead of time for your help, Luis.

Tweaking the management interface
by peter 31 May '00

31 May '00

I'm not a Python genious, but I do know some Python and a lot of HTML. I would like to experiment with changing the way the management interface is built up. The management interface of Zope is basically built up in two-column frames like this: ------------------ | | | | | | | 1 | 2 | | | | | | | | | | ------------------ Which is in HTML code: <frameset cols=175,*> <frame name=manage_menu src=http://url/manage_menu> <frame name=manage_main src=http://url/manage_main> </frameset> But I want something like this: ------------------ | | | | 1 | | | | 2 | |-----| | | | | | 3 | | ------------------ Which is in HTML code: <frameset cols=175,*> <frameset rows=150,*> <frame name=manage_menu src=http://url/manage_menu> <frame name=manage_extramenu src=http://url/manage_extramenu> <frame name=manage_main src=http://url/manage_main> </frameset> In frame 3 I want to load a DTML Method, DTML Document, Python module, .dtml file or whatever is possible to load there. So I can change this simply in zoperoot\lib\python\App\manage.dtml I save a file called extramenu.dtml in the same location as menu.dtml and main.dtml, zoperoot\lib\python\App\ and zoperoot\lib\python\Ofs respectivly. All I get is an 'Resource not found' error in frame 3. So, where should I save my extramenu.dtml and should at all call it extramenu.dtml or manage_extramenu.dtml? And do I have to change any Python code?

Re: [Zope] absolute_url and growing URLS????
by Dieter Maurer 31 May '00

31 May '00

Hello Andrew > I've got a strange problem I call "growing URLS" > > When I click on links that take me around a section on folders on zope, the urls just keep > piling on each other. This seems to be an effect of aquisition. In Zope, you can see at a place everything that is above it in the Zope tree. Example: If your page has URL: a/b/c and inside you page you use the *relative* URL "a", your *browser* will form the URL "a/b/c/a". In a normal file systems, this will give a "Not Found" error. In Zope however, you will get "a" but with the "URL" "a/b/c/a", because "c" has aquired "a". So you must be careful with relative URL's. Look at the URL* and BASE* Zope defined objects (--> DTML reference). They can help you to contruct (absolute) URLs. You may also use ".." to go to a parent. Dieter
