Is the ZCatalog named 'Catalog'? If not, are you trying to munge the 'default_catalog' property at all? CatalogAware instances expect to find their catalogs under the name, 'Catalog', unless you change the 'default_catalog' class variable to something else. The "del foo" > statement jsut decreases the reference count of foo by 1 (and when it hits > zero, it is garbage collected). Doah... I guess it plainly obvious I'm not a python person eh? Just learning it.. But I definitly like it.. How to I know when an instance is deleted?? I need this to be able to remove a record in a DB.. Any suggestions? --John

Is there a "last_modified_by" attribute in DTML
by Chip Vanek 20 Apr '00

20 Apr '00

Hi, I found an old mail list item talking about a new function and just want to know if it now exists. I want to keep track of who modified some items along with the time and original creator. Tanks for any pointers, Chip Vanek e-Mail: chip(a)upcast.com Jim Fulton wrote: Ben Leslie wrote: > > Hi everyone, > > I hope someone could be able to help me here. Yes, but not as easily as there should be, and only from Python. ZODB3 exposes two interfaces for doing this. You should be able to: db=aDocument._p_jar.db() # Get the database the object came from history=db.history(aDocument._p_oid, size=9999) To get a sequence of history entries with information on when changes were made, by whom, in what version, description etc. See: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Models/ZODB/ZODB_Architecture_DB_history-- Callable_Doc.html Unfortunately, this method isn't implemented yet. :( I skipped over it early on and never got back to it. I'll try to get this done for Zope 2.1 (or Zope 2.0.1). I've submitted this bug to the collector. You might also use the undo log with something like: db=aDocument._p_jar.db() # Get the database the object came from log=db.undoLog(0,9999, lambda u, db=db: string.find(u['description'], db.absolute_url(1))==0 ) This will return a sequence of transaction log entries for methods on the document. See the undo section in the ZODB model at: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Models/ZODB Now, both of the suggestions above only work if you are using a ZODB storage that supports undo and they only show records that haven't been removed by packing. (Actually, undoLog only shows records that are undoable, which is not all records). In the future: - An auditing UI of some sort will be added that calls these methods for you and, - An optional feature will be added in storages to save auditing information in such a way that it is available independent of packing. Jobs: Web wizards @ criticalpublics.com, Athens, Greece
by costis＠criticalpublics 20 Apr '00

We resend this in plain ASCII - apologies to the community for the HTML litter in our previous posting. cd Our job announcement (following) may be of interest to the Zope community, since Zope with Python is one of our foremost candidates for applications prototyping (and possibly also delivery). As we are currently starting a fasttrack web communications project for a major public sector client, perhaps one of you Zope/Python heads could be tempted to spend this summer in Greece? The core of the project is to architect, design and implement a very large information / community site, leveraging and further developing components implementing generic functionalities. As you'll see, the announcement is for regular staff positions, but in the context of this project we could live with a short term relationship, especially if we get to work with talented and results-oriented individuals! If you're interested, and can be available say from mid-May onwards, drop us a note and we can take it from there. Best, Costis PS. Santorini and Myconos are only 30' away by flight, and Athens summer life is, should I say, fun. The project is hard work, but we don't always work on weekends!! ANNOUNCEMENT FOLLOWS: criticalpublics.com is seeking WEB APPLICATIONS PROGRAMMERS, to be based in the office of Critical Publics SA, its subsidiary in Athens, Greece. Your mission: * To develop and implement large-scale, database-driven web applications for major clients, using standards-based methodologies and tools. * To produce technical briefs and possibly manage outsourcing of overflow work to freelance programmers. * To ensure perfect operation of our Intranet and Internet applications. You are: * A highly motivated Internet programming / systems wizard, able to produce functioning, well-documented applications using major web scripting languages. Your skills include: * A minimum of two years of proven experience in one of the major scripting languages (Perl, Python etc.) or equivalent experience in C, C++ or Java programming. * One year of Oracle or SQL Server applications programming and administration experience. * One year of Javascript, Flash/Shockwave and serious HTML coding experience. * One year of Linux /Unix system administration experience. * Solid overall knowledge of scripting, servers, cross browser support, databases, dynamic web applications and access logging. * An ability to complete programming assignments from detailed specification and design through to actual installation and operation. Additionally, you may be familiar with: * Web information architecture, usability and hypermedia design methodologies. * Object-oriented analysis and design methods and tools. * SGML and/or XML-based information standards, applications and tools. If accepted, you will be able to: * Work in the best area of Greater Athens, 20' by train to the Central Railway Station. * Be part of an international, creative, multidisciplinary team. * Enjoy the nicest lifestyle within the EMU zone of the European Union. You will be offered an attractive remuneration, plus benefits and bonuses, depending on your qualifications. ANNOUNCE: new ZClasses Survey/Quiz Product alpha
by Jim Washington 20 Apr '00

20 Apr '00

"Release early, release often" -- ESR I have put up a new release of the ZClasses Survey/Quiz Product this afternoon. It is at: http://www.zope.org/Members/jwashin/Survey It does some new, whizzy stuff. It has been redefined as a multi-page survey product, which may at some later time be extended to do quizzes. It does not yet do any validation of input, but many features are in place. * Page-centric model. QSurveys hold QPages hold DTML Documents and Questions. * Item (question and DTML Document content) ordering within a page is managed at the QPage level. * DTML Documents within QPages allow arbitrary content to be interspersed with the questions. DTML Documents are particularly useful on first and last pages. * Optional branching from a page to other pages based the values of multiple choice questions allows on-the-fly navigation decisions. * Uses QSurvey level CSS-based rendering, which looks OK on most browsers and degrades nicely, too. * Automatic storage of response information in the ZODB. It's stored by question-name. * Multiple-choice questions are configurable as drop-down lists or radio buttons. Configuring for may_choose_more_than_one creates checkboxes or multiple-select list boxes. It is ZClasses, so it is easy to remove if you decide you do not like it. It does add four items to the global add list, and I apologize for that pollution but see no way around it at the moment. Suggestions and feature requests are welcome, though I am most likely to work on stuff I think I need at the moment. It is still alpha, and there are visible hooks for unimplemented features. But it likely should work fine for you if you need to do a quick-and-dirty survey. -- Jim Washington Center for Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Programming Department of Teaching and Learning, Virginia Tech

RE: [Zope] Adding SSL support to ZServer (was: www.oswg.org runs Zope?)
by Mike Fletcher 20 Apr '00

20 Apr '00

As a sort of mini-how-to (Windows NT assumed) for the curious... Download m2crypto, unpack into a directory, add directory to Python path. http://www.post1.com/home/ngps/m2 Copy all contents of /demo/ZServerSSL-2.1.3 into your Zope installation directory (that is, the place where z2.py lives) Generate a certificate for yourself somehow (note that if you do not have a "blessed" certificate, your users will get a nasty security message when they attempt to access the secured portions of the site). (Still haven't been successful here, the Perl script CA.pl seems to be looking for some executable or script I don't have, or do not have correctly installed). Also see the FAQ on OpenSSL.org for discussions of legal propriety etc. For testing, you might run with the default certificate, but not likely a good idea. Change all Zope start-up commands to point to z2s.py instead of z2.py . Append -W HTTPSPORT and HTTPS=on to your switches and variables. (where HTTPSPORT is the port number you want the ssl server to run on) Restart Zope Save for the certificate generation, and the somewhat less than obvious step of requiring a new startup script (z2s vs z2), a very simple process. Okay, I have now assauged my curiosity. Enjoy yourselves, Mike Note: Opinions are my own and information may be totally out to lunch. Use at your own risk :)
