User Role, Authentication, HTTP
by Hung Jung Lu 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

Hi, I have the following situation: (1) I'd like to use Zope's security model, so I can prevent unauthorized users from accessing contents in subfolders. (2) I want to keep user name and password in a database, not in acl_users folder. (Basically, I would like ZODB to be read-only. So I can't add users into acl_users, I have to add users into my own database.) (3) I don't want to use the pop-up dialog box to enter the user name and password. I want to do it through HTTP form interface. So, what can I do? Is there a way in Python to tap into ZODB Authentication? I mean, I could create a generic user for the purpose of ZODB user authentication, and then activate the ZODB generic user from the HTML authentication. Or is there a way to add a role to the current AUTHENTICATED_USER, dynamically? This problem seems common enough that people have probably addressed it before. Where can I find more information on manipulating Zope's AUTHENTICATED_USER? regards, Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

zope objects in python : map() and filter()
by ed colmar 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

I have a few questions as to how to map zope objcts in python, and I'm looking for help with this particular example. I am trying to create a python method that will take one argument, a string variable. It will then find the people that match and return a list with each of the person's data. I have found two methods that come close to doing what I am after. The first one returns all of the people data, including all the variables, and the second one filters out the people I don't want, but only returns the ids. I've tried switching aroung the map(None, self.ids) to map(None, self.data) and I get typerrors from lambda. I don't fully understand how this is working or what the data looks like to the interpreter, but I know I'm close Can anyone help? I've got ! these both work ! : -------- def peopleValues(self): """ return list of people's data """ return map(lambda x, p=self: x.__of__(p), self.data.map(self.ids)) def remote_personlist(self, thisdjname): """ returns true with ids to remote people that match """ rlist = map(None, self.ids) rlist = filter(lambda x,p=self : p.data[x].meta_type == 'This Kind of Person', rlist) rlist = filter(lambda x,p=self,s=thispersonname : p.data[x].clientpersonname == s, rlist) return rlist ------- Thanks! -ed-

dtml-in iteration over a string.split
by Daniel.Weber＠SEMATECH.Org 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

I've put the following in a SQL method, but can't figure out where the count ends up... <dtml-in "_.string.split(tool_id)"> tool_id is a string (like 'EXP01 EXP02 EXP03'). For my normal DB activities I use count-attribute name for the count total, but I can't seem to find out where the count is stored in this example... I tried getting the key with sequence-key, which returned 1, but count-1 returns 0. I've solved this already with <dtml-if expr="_.len(_.string.split(tool_id)) > 1"> but this bothers me.... I know theres a better way!

Problems with dtml-in batch variables.
by Curtis Maloney 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

Greetings, I am using the ever-so-handy next-sequence-* and previous-sequence-* variables for a batched list. This all seems to work fine, allowing users to look through bite-sized portions of the list. However, there seems to be a problem. Whatever calculates these values appears to assume that the numbers are sequential, which, in my case, they are not. So, whilst i get the correct number of items each time, they overlap when they shouldn't, and the next/previous limits are reported incorrectly. The dtml-in tag in question is : <dtml-in "sqlQueryHere()" size=4 start=qs orphan=0> Any comments? -- Have a better one, Curtis. <dtml-var standard_work_disclaimer>

Enhydra anyone?
by Hung Jung Lu 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

Hi, Is there any comparison between Enhydra (Java-based open-source application server) and Zope (Python-base open-source application server)? I guess Zope and Enhydra are colliding head-on. :) Can anyone give a little bit more background to Enhydra? Zope site used to have a page about comparisons (like with PHP), now I cannot find that page. Having worked with Java (and previously with C++), I must say that I don't have a positive opinion about Java. I know Enhydra has this "open source" thingy and even tries its best at painting "worldwide developer hall of fame" stuff, but it seems kind of corny. I just don't think you can do open source well enough with a language like Java which was designed by the corportate and for the corporate. It's not that Zope is excellent, it's not. But Python's CP4E (computer programming for everyone) approach eventually will make it longer lasting than anything else, (especially after Python 2 comes out) and I just don't see how Java can survive in the long run. As for Zope, I guess in the long run it will need a major re-work, otherwise it will lost the competitive edge. document versions
by George Runyan 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

zopistas, how would I write a dtml_method to render a objects history (undoable transactions/revisions)? any insight is much appreciated. how about being able to export the objects history (revisions) via XML and then I could pack and then reimport it into ZODB (or is this complete madness? ) - this way I can still pack and keep revisions around of specific objects... i.e. I would like to keep all objects revisions but need to PACK the DB (because its overwhelming large) -- what is the way, masters de zope? many thanks, george runyan grunyan(a)emerging.com

WorldPilot Performance
by Timothy Grant 14 Mar '00

14 Mar '00

Hi, I've been playing with WorldPilot on my little notebook PC running RH6.1, and have noticed that when I access my WorldPilot folder, my processor spikes and stays spiked until I kill my ZServer and restart. My machine is just only a 233 w/64Mb RAM, but I have never seen Zope behave this way with any other products. Running a top shows that my python/ZServer processes are consuming far more than their fair share of cycles. Has anyone else noticed this? Thanks. -- Stand Fast, tjg. I know that Zope has the capabality to keep up some sort of version managament system for zope documents. I have two questions concerning this. One, where might I find some more info concerning this. And two, what if I want to use my fav editor - say vi or pico...but that's another war I don't want to start ;)...instead of the window that zope provides. IF the file already exists in zope, and then I go and make changes in a separate editor, and upload the file, since I am uploading the file, will zope keep track of this as just another version of the same file? Thanks. The Very New Newbie to Zope, Jessica
