Performance and Concurrency
by Cary O'Brien 08 Mar '00

I was reading the thread about Zope vs AOLServer and performance and threading and all that. I've done some work with other interpreters embedded in the apache child processes (tcl, mod-perl) so I started wondering if this would work for zope. Somewhere I think there is a Python interpreter embedded a'la mod-perl. If not, I'm pretty sure it can be done without too much grief, using mod-perl and mod-dtcl as starting points or examples. It seems to me this would allow utilization of multiple processors, esp for apps with a database backend, since the work would be split up over n frontend apache server processes and n backend database processes (at least for oracle an PostgreSQL)[1]. All without worrying about threading... But... What happens when multiple processes attempt to access the zame ZODB Data.fs file? Is it multi-process safe? Thread safe? How big are the sections protected by the mutexes? (or more importantly how long do they take to execute). Thanks, -- cary [1] m apache talking to n database backend process, m > n, might be even nicer in some cases. Gotta write that PostgreSQL backend multiplexor someday.

I am trying to pick a random element from a SQL Method (list) I got this far: <dtml-var expr="_.whrandom.choice(sqlMethodNamet())"> and get... <r instance at 87183a8> I know I a missing the boat in some way in terms of OO and lists but I find this a bit different than my usual Python programming. Any help would be great. Thanks, JMA

Zope-edu lives!!
by Timothy Wilson 08 Mar '00

08 Mar '00

Hi everyone, I wanted to let everyone know that after a couple months of listserv trouble (and busy schedules) Zope-edu is back in business. We've set up shop at Sourceforge.net, and you can find the group's page at http://sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=3093 In addition, our Zope-powered page with more information and a Squishdot community forum can be found at http://www.zschool.org/ For those of you who haven't heard of us before, Zope-edu is a group of people involved with or interested in using Zope as a tool in education. We're an international group with interests that span the educational spectrum. You (that's right, I'm talking to you) are invited to join our listserv and participate in planning, coding, promoting, or doing whatever you do best. -Tim -- Tim Wilson | Visit Sibley online: | Check out: Henry Sibley HS | http://www.isd197.k12.mn.us/ | http://www.zope.org/ W. getting object reference from an id string?
by Darran Edmundson 08 Mar '00

08 Mar '00

Say one has an object reference and knows the string id of a child node. From this info, we want an object reference to the named child. I'd like someone to prove me wrong that there is not a one-liner to accomplish this seemingly trivial task. I've had to resort to (off the top of my head) code like: <dtml-in "objectValues(['child meta-type'])"> <dtml-with sequence-item> <dtml-if "id == desired_id"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('desired_ref',_['sequence-item'])"> </dtml-if> </dtml-with> </dtml-in> I'm really looking for a solution that doesn't require looping. Since Zope enforces unique id's at a given level, the name should be sufficient to resolve the child object. Darran.

Sort order
by Kiran Jonnalagadda 08 Mar '00

I can use "sort_order=reverse" to get a reverse sorted list in ZCatalog. What's the equivalent for dtml-in? sort_order doesn't work and I can't find anything else in the docs. -- Kiran Jonnalagadda http://lunateks.com baby.sh: while true; do echo "^G^G^G^G^G"; sed -e 's/food/poop/'; sync; sync; sleep 15; done

Zopistas, I'd really like to give worldpilot a spin, but the FTP site seems to be AWOL. Could someone be so kind as to drop me a copy or let me know where I could find it? Thanks, -- ethan fremen - mindlace(a)imeme.net good design is as close as I want to get to ideology.

Tree-expand bug!?
by Petr Knapek 08 Mar '00

08 Mar '00

Hi Zopists, I have tried to expand tree and a Zope error has appeared. Below, you can see setting up of expand_all variable together with the beginning of my tree. The collapse_all is working without any problem, the tree collapses when the collapse_all is set up to '1'. The problem is only with the expand_all. call stored procedure from sql method object
by Chien-pin Wang 08 Mar '00

08 Mar '00

I have installed ZOracleDA to bridge Zope and Oracle 8.0.5 on Linux. How do I call the stored procedures written in Oracle from "Add a SQL Method" interface, especially when there are OUT parameters returned from stored procedures? I have read the DCOracle mini how-to but there seems to be a missing step ahead. Assume the scenario: Oracle Procedure: myProc(para1 IN VARCHAR2, para2 OUT INTEGER, para3 OUT REFCURSOR%TYPE) What should I put in the "Arguments" box and "Query template" box? And how do I retrieve the returned arguments in the following dtml document/methods? Thanks a lot! Chien-pin

Get author name from zope
by Sin Hang Kin 08 Mar '00

08 Mar '00

Can I retrieve the author's name from Zope? Is it always available? I am writing a module to put into the header to generate dublin core rdf record. I would like to retrieve this information automatically. BTW, does anybody have "open source" legal notices and privacy policies (a few samples for web masters to choose) can freely distributable with zope? Rgs, Kent Sin
