What prevents id collisions in Zope? It looks like the the ObjectManager.py code checks to see if the id is taken, and then it reserves the id. Is there a danger that 2 processes/threads (z2.py -t 4?) could both check and reserve the same id? Is there something in Zope that prevents this (improbable, but perhaps possible) problem? Is there certain way to find an object id that is not taken?

unhandled connect event

(short time reader, first time poster) So I've set up my zope installation to test it out for use as the intranet server and content management system for my company. One of the features that I intend to use heavily is the FTP access, the main users of the system will be designers and their clients, so I want to set up an interface that works with existing tools <DTML-rah-rah yeah>. However everytime I connect with ftp (used Dreamweaver's FTP client as well as EMACS) I get an "PROBLEM(100) ZServer unhandled connect event" error from Zope. I've just upgraded to 2.1.4 which solved the crashing problem for the most part. My question is what is an "unhandled connect event", can I make a connect event be handled? Is there a howto, a document or a previous thread on this subject? Help, I want to be a fanatic! -- grumpy futurist taylor(a)taylor.org

Siteaccess problems

Hi, I've had a couple of problems with SiteAccess. The first one appeared when I tried the sample code from the doc: <dtml-unless "REQUEST.path[0][:6]=='manage'"> ... This Access Rule is placed in some directory foo. If I try to access http://my.site.org/foo I get: Error Type: IndexError Error Value: list index out of range If I try http://my.site.org/foo/bar, there is no such problem. The second problem is the following: I am trying to set up siteaccess so that it checks for user authentification, and redirects to a login screen if necessary. That way, I am sure all authentification is cookie-based, and I don't get the ugly error page in case of failure. So I tried: <dtml-unless "REQUEST.path[0][:6]=='manage'"> <dtml-unless "AUTHENTICATED_USER.has_role('Member')"> redirect to login screen </dtml-unless> </dtml-unless> But then I get: Error Type: KeyError Error Value: AUTHENTICATED_USER Which is weird, because if I try to render the method normally, it works. I tried replacing <dtml-unless "AUTHENTICATED_USER.has_role('Member')"> by <dtml-unless "AUTHENTICATED_USER"> And I get the same result. Last thing, I would like to be able to set the path to the login screen ('foo/login'). What is the most elegant way of doing that? I seem to also have permission problems when accessing methods like absolute_url() in the Access Rule. This might be related to the previous problem. Thanks a lot, Stefan.

After much struggling ... the docs REALLY REALLY must be improved ... I finally understood what zope was for yesterday, in a spectactular epiphany! After installing PyGreSQL and mucking about with some dtml-in statements, I am hooked. Addicted. Zope is The Only Way To Web... (I think I'll be keeping my personal website outside of it, but mainly because I *want* my personal website to be crufty and poorly designed... that's what makes it personal ^_^) However, this new rush of excitement was tempered by the realization that I probably couldn't use it for the distributed authoring purposes that I had hoped I could. Security is a HUGE concern for me: students from college campuses log in to my server, and many of them are on networks where sniffers are running. This is not a random paranoid raving, either: our server has been attacked three times in the past six months. The attacks succeeded the first time, but we have since wised up and insisted that everyone connect over SSH only, no telnet, and Debian keeps us up-to-date on security fixes. A few questions: * Is there any way to secure the authentication process that Zope has, on the wire? * Can this be done internally to ZServer? If not, I have had some problems connecting over the Apache thing to the management interface. I hope that this is resolvable. (Debian Apache/Zope users?) Anyway, now that I know what's going on ... zope is AMAZING. external method problems (ARGH!)

Hello, I'm getting grief from an external python, method and I'm hoping that someone has some ideas that might help. Here's what I'm doing. I have a Zope product (SmartDTML) consisting of a Zclass which inherrits a DTML Document. I've heavily modified the constructor DTML Method, and among other things it calls some external python code which takes an uploaded file, converts it, and then preloads it into the DTML document via the munge() method. (I've included the code below) The external python code can be run from two places. 1. it runs automatically when you add a new instance of SmartDTML. and 2. from the Upload tab of the newly created SmartDTML instance . Well when called from the object's constructor, my external code runs and works just fine. But when called from the Upload tab, I keep getting "read-only character buffer, instance" errors out of zope. I have an indistinct feeling that it might have something to do with permissions but I don't know enough about Zope yet to know whether or not that is a valid hunch. Incidentally, this product I'm working on is a supposed to be a modified DTML Document which knows how to convert MSWord documents to HTML automatically. help with zodb

okay, i'll try again, with some code this time. i'm trying to use zodb to provide persistent store. after various permutations swiped from the howto, jim fulton's SPAM8 paper, and quick python, i've still got the same basic problem, with no clue what's wrong. so i've distilled it down to a small example. i've got a simple Person class, defined in Person.py: import Persistence class Person(Persistence.Persistent): """A Persistent Person""" def __init__(self, name, age): self.name = name self.age = age i can create a database and populate it by running a small script (not shown here). it works fine when run by hand. i've also got a file in $ZOPE/Extensions called Keepers.py: import ZODB, ZODB.FileStorage db = ZODB.DB( ZODB.FileStorage.FileStorage( 'TestDB.fs' ) ) connection = db.open() root = connection.root() def GetPeople( self ): "Return list of people in DB" people = [] for key in root.keys(): people.append( root[ key ] ) return people if __name__ == '__main__': for person in GetPeople( None ): print person.name, 'is', person.age, 'years old' i can run this by hand, and it works fine. so i create an External Method that points to GetPeople(). when i reference it in a DTML document, i get: Could not lock the database file. While there are many fine developers who have the intent of creating a product for distribution which is for all practical purposes a commercial grade deliverable (with docs and all). I would not want to set this as the standard. If this level of 'compliance' becomes the norm, then we could easily loose half of the contributions that are currently in place. These contributions have been made by indoviduals who have developed something for their own use and have tossed it into the community 'as-is' just in case some one else can find benefit from it. I do appreciate being able to install a product and have it work like a champ with documentation, however being able to work through someone elses contributed code to see how they did x-y-z is of huge benefot to me as well. It would be a shame to loose these resources just because we demanded that the contributor actually become a literary author as well as code author. ... just my ($1.00/50) worth.

Squishdot issue?

All - I just started working with Zope a couple of months ago. Recently, at Zope version 2.1.2 I added the TinyTable and Squishdot products to my installation. I was able to create a Squishdot object and customize. No problems.... However, I am now running a fresh installation of Zope version 2.1.4 (same Squishdot version 0.3.2) and have once again created a Squishdot object inside a Folder object. Well, when trying to access the Squishdot object from a browser, I am prompted with a sign-in box. I have not created an ACLUSERS object so by default anyone should be able to view the object without needing to authenticate. This is probably something stupid and easy to fix, but I cannot find the solution. Does anyone have a suggestion? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Brian

Green things... In my experience, objectValues('tagname') is what you're after. It will return a list of all children with the tag name of 'tagnam'. so, to get the paragraphs of the a file called sample_xml containing: <html> <body> Paragraph1 Paragraph2 </body> </html> you would use: sample_xml[0].objectValues('body')[0].objectValues('p') This is code i have used several times. Of course, if you are working over the body and p tags seperately, you can use: <dtml-in "sample_xml[0].objectValues('body')"> <do things here> <dtml-in "objectValues('p')"> <do paragraph things here> </dtml-in> </dtml-in> Is this the sort of info you were after?
