DISCUSS: Zope Documentation Plan
by Amos Latteier 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

Hello, Documentation is one of Zope's weakest points. For Zope to be a popular application server and a vital open source project this needs to change. As you may have heard, DC is opening up a Portland, Oregon office. We've decided to take this opportunity to work on Zope documentation more seriously. The Portland office (that's me, Michel Pelletier, and Karl Anderson) have been charged with the mandate of improving Zope documentation. To this end, I've prepared a short plan which summarizes our goals and some of the projects that we're working on to achieve those goals. http://www.zope.org/Members/Amos/Documentation/Plan I'm interested in feedback from the Zope community on the plan. Do you agree with the goals and projects? What else should we be doing to improve Zope documentation? If you are interested in being involving in the documentation projects listed in the plan, please write the listed contact people. We will have more information about the current documentation projects available as the projects progress. Thanks for your feedback! -Amos -- Amos Latteier mailto:amos@digicool.com Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com

Optimization of Speed, Performance
by J. Atwood 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

I have read over all of the benchmarking and performance figures for Zope but has anyone written (thought about, scribbled notes) something about how to optimize a Zope installation? Thinks that need some consideration. - Memory Management (increase, decrease) - Cache Flushing - Threads? I am running ZServer by itself and it is fast, but how can I get it to go FASTER? Thanks, JMA

more info for manage_exportObject question
by Daniel G. Rusch 24 Feb '00

Consider: FolderA SomeOtherItem FolderB ItemToExport I can export ItemToExport from FolderA by calling: (Item == ItemToExport) <dtml-with "FolderA.FolderB"> <dtml-call "manage_exportObject(id=Item)"> </dtml-with> New findings: I have found that I can export SomeOtherItem from the root by calling: (PathToItem == FolderA and Item == SomeOtherItem) <dtml-with "_.getitem(PathToItem,0)"> <dtml-call "manage_exportObject(id=Item)"> </dtml-with> But if I try to set PathToItem equal to FolderA.FolderB I get a KeyError: FolderA.FolderB Any thoughts???????????????? Worldpilot IMAP Bl00z
by Tres Seaver 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

I have installed WP 1.01 on a fresh Zope 2.1.3. On the same RH 6.1 box, I am running the stock imapd, which I can connect to from Netscape's Messenger. The files/directories under /var/spool/worldpilot are owned by nobody.zope (I start Zope as root). When I log in, the browser spins after displaying the WP headers. top on the server shows the Zope python process (running as nobody) and an imapd process (running as me) sucking all the CPU, but nothing happens. If I click on one of the links in the header, I can see the calendar, to-do list, etc., but the mail pane shows a Zope error, with "readonly -- INBOX" at the foot of the traceback. What am I doing wrong? -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com

how to update a DTML document from python
by auto44082＠hushmail.com 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

Greetings: What method/property does one read from/write to to update the contents of a DTML Document. I'm trying to do this from an external python method. I've got the HTML text in a variable, I just have to write it to the right place. Where is that? Thanks, -Andy IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are not using HushMail, this message could have been read easily by the many people who have access to your open personal email messages. a whole lot of db related Q's
by Raymund Ramos 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

I installed python 1.5.2 with RPMs and installed a Zope 2.1.2 source package. However, I get this with databases I've done using External Methods and shelve [which seems to make bsd dbm files]: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: error Error Value: db type could not be determined ----- How do I fix this without recompiling whole packages? So since that stuff doesn't work, I've moved to trying to use ZSQL methods. Given a ZSQL method viewbytitle, args: title (subject is a property) with a query: select * from metadb where title = <dtml-sqlvar title type=string> and subj like '%<dtml-var subject>%' Can I do something like <dtml-let x=viewbytitle(title='WorldCat')> <dtml-var "x.url"> </dtml-let> ? Is this possible using DTML/ZSQLMethods or do I need to do an External Method? Last Q, does anyone know of good tools that will move PC databases (FM Pro, dBase) into PostgreSQL easily? I've been saving the databases in tab-delim format and then using python scripts to import them into pgsql, with all of the quoting problems. thanks. -ray

Dumb Fix
by Denny Valliant 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

Hey yall, que pasa?!?! A few months ago I wrote the list about a prob I was having converting an old zope db to the new ver. The problem was that when I clicked on a folder in management view, it would show me the contents in browser form, (ie: the index page of the folder) rather than admin form (where you actually SEE what's in the dir). I had people suggest stuff for userdb, etc.. (thanks guys!) Well I figured out what I did wrong, and fixed it a while back. Although it was one of those stupid little things, they'll get ya sometimes, so I figured I'd at least tell the list what it was, in case some other learner has the same thing happen to 'em. (wheew! long sentence huh?!?) Enneywaze, it turned out that I the folder I was having trouble with just didn't have a name! As soon as I named the folder, it ported with no probs!!! I feel retarded for falling for this one, but hey! ya live, ya learn, ya know! This list is a great resource, I'd like to thank everyone on it! Peach out, Denny

manage_exportObject
by Daniel G. Rusch 24 Feb '00

24 Feb '00

Now I'm getting desperate, this is the third posting. Any thoughts no matter how far fetched would be overwhelmingly appreciated. Does anyone know how to export an object (Folder or such) from outside of the Folder that contains the item to be exported without hard coding the path. In other words I would like to be able to have a user interface which would allow a person, with an export role, to be able to enter a list of fully qualified Items to be exported. Consider: FolderA FolderB ItemToExport I can export ItemToExport from FolderA by calling: <dtml-with "FolderA.FolderB"> <dtml-call "manage_exportObject(id='ItemToExport')"> </dtml-with> but I don't want the FolderA.FolderB to be hard coded. I would like it to be a var that I pass into the method. Something like: <dtml-with FullPath> what should the syntax be. Thanks,
