Zope, Linux, and MDB files

Hi, Are there a way to a Zope application, running on a Linux System, get access to a .MDB file, and publish some data? How? TIA -- Cesar A. K. Grossmann - AOLIM CesarAKG - ICQ# 53373705 http://members.xoom.com/ckant/ ...when you are obsessed with the enemy, you become the enemy.

doc/FAQ.txt and linux libc5 problem.
by Jerome ALET 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

doc/FAQ.txt says that zope requires glibc (libc6) to work under Linux Zope 2.1.3 seems to works perfectly (AFAICS) on my Sparc 20 under Linux 2.0.35 with libc5.3.12 and python 1.5.2 however there were two small error messages when starting zope, related to the time.timezone module which doesn't seem to be available (maybe it's a problem when I've compiled python, or it's a libc5 problem, or I've deleted some files, I don't know). For those of you who might be interested here are the two small patches to make it work without error messages (they are attached to this message). before going into production state, did anyone encountered other problems when running zope on a libc5 based system ? I mean what really are the risks ? I don't want to update this installation for now, so if it works I'll keep it. thanks in advance. Navigator Tree
by Chris Withers 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

Hi, Has anyone done a tree-style navigator for the directory structure in Zope? What I'm aiming for is exactly the same sort of tree as you get in the /manage views, except not in a different frame. Also, hopefully something that I can include in standard_html_header so that it's visible throughout the site. Cheers for any help, Chris

ZCatalog Search Question
by James W. Howe 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

When I search a ZCatalog, does ZCatalog compute any sort of relevance score? For example, if I'm doing a full text search, I might want to know which items have more hits so I could sort them to the top of a list. On the same topic, when I do a ZCatalog search, how do I find out how many items were found? I've read over the dtml-in documentation and I must be overlooking the variable which tells me how many total items I've found. I need this information when I display my results. Thanks. James W. Re: [Zope] what about a dtml-python tag ?

jerome alet <ale-(a)unice.fr> wrote: >what about adding a new dtml tag called dtml-python useable this way: I don't like the current DTML, but this beast is there for two good reasons: (1) security. (2) garbage collection. Your suggestion is good, but it's just too hard to implement an interpreter for a sub-dialect of Python that is secure. Keep in mind that hackers can potentially obtain admin passward of your site and edit your DTMLs, you really don't want anything in DTML that compromises security. Any thing vital should be pushed from ZODB to local file system. Another thing is: your website potentially can be hit by thousand or millions of people, when you create the functions/objects, you have to think about cleaning it up after being used. The current scheme is to use stack approach and the REQUEST variable. Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

You may want to have a look at the Calendar Tag ;-) http://www.zope.org/Members/jdavid/Calendar Chris Jason Cunliffe wrote: > > Hello > > Looking for zope calendar advice and ideas.. > > Design goal: A Zope smart-calendar product which allows very interactive > setting and display of calendars in a range of formats. what about a dtml-python tag ?
by Jerome ALET 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

Hi there, first excuse me, if this idea looks stupid just delete this message: what about adding a new dtml tag called dtml-python useable this way: <dtml-python mypythonmodule> def myfunc(param) : return param * 3 def anotherfunc(p1, p2) return str(myfunc(p1)) + ' ' + str(myfunc(p2)) </dtml-python> <dtml-var mypythonmodule.anotherfunc(3,9)> this would allow to embed python code in dtml files without having to create external methods. I really don't know if this could be useful (I've not used external methods for now) or if it is feasible, I'm simply surprised that this sort of tag doesn't seem to exist. bye, Jerome ALET - alet(a)unice.fr - http://cortex.unice.fr/~jerome Faculte de Medecine de Nice - http://noe.unice.fr - Tel: 04 93 37 76 30 28 Avenue de Valombrose - 06107 NICE Cedex 2 - FRANCE

using DTML outside of Zope
by Doug Hellmann 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

I'm exploring the possibility of separating the DTML template-parsing engine from Zope and calling it from a C/C++ application running on a Windows machine. I wouldn't be using any other Zope modules (ZODB, ZPublisher, ZServer, etc.). My data would be coming from a database other than the ZODB. It looks like the DTML engine itself is fairly well separated from the rest of the Zope code, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do things like supplying sequences to the <dtml-in> command. All of my database access methods are written in C++ classes; so at some point, the sequence name in the <dtml-in> command should cause one of these methods to be invoked. Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Can you give me some pointers of how this could be done? -- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Doug Hellmann Healtheon / WebMD Software Engineer http://www.webmd.com

Tip: do scheduled site imports using load_site.py
by Maarten Slaets 07 Feb '00

07 Feb '00

Problem: -------- You have a certain directory structure that needs to be imported into zope every day. If you just put python z-load_site.py -p /usr/local/Zope/lib/python/ZPublisher -u user:password -v http://zope.site/dir /localdir/* in your crontab, it will fail the second time it runs, because it tries to import objects with id names that are already existing. Solution: --------- One solution could be to wrap the manage_add calls to catch these exceptions (Oleg-way:-). I didn't succeed in doing that, but I found another solution already built into Zope: modify 'def _checkId(self, id, allow_dup=0)' in '/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py' to 'def _checkId(self, id, allow_dup=1)' This auto-overwrites existing objects with the same name. Only drawback: if you upload a directory that way, the existing one is removed + all its contents at that time. Hope this can be useful. PS: I've attached a patch for ObjectManager.py for Zope 2.0.1 (yeah I know, it's old). To use it: patch -iObjectManager.py.diff ObjectManager.py you may need to modify '-iObjectManager.py.diff' to point to another directory... -- Maarten Slaets Web Developer KPNQwest Belgium http://www.fonky.com/vcard/MaartenSlaets/ 194c194 < def _checkId(self, id, allow_dup=0): --- > def _checkId(self, id, allow_dup=1):

Healtheon/WebMD presentation from IPC8
by Doug Hellmann 07 Feb '00

I have received several requests from individuals who would like to view the slides we presented during the Zope Track at IPC8. The slides have been posted to zope.org at http://www.zope.org/Members/reedwade/IPC8/. We are still working on the performance testing so there is no new information on that front. Thanks for the interest, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the presentation. Doug
