Renderable Base Zclass
by Jeroen Baekelandt 20 Jan '00

20 Jan '00

Hi, I'm desperately trying to understand how to make the CaptionedImage as an example to use Renderable Base ZClass. I just can't get it to work, because I don't really know how to start (me-is-really-new-to-Zope). So I add a product MyImage and add a ZClass to it. The ZClass subclasses Image and Renderable. I got that far. Could somebody explain how to continue? What i basically want is an ordinary Image (with the normal properties) + one extra: the caption, that gets rendered just below the image. I read the ZClass Guide, but the examples in there just don't apply to this one (it seems). Thanks, Jeroen

Orcale is very poor of managing connections. The entire transaction process monitor (TPM) business earns of its revenue from this fact. A TPM (just like ZOracleDA) uses its own username/password to connect to a database. This is the only way to maintain an efficient connection pooling strategy. I am very curios of your rationale of thinking of this usage of Oracle. > > I am considering using Zope for the site, but the question is - how can > I create one ZOracleDA connection for every user, and how can I use diferent > connections for different users? > > Cuurently the site is in the process of development, and we are > considering different techiniques. If you want to use a separate connection for each user, you will not have any pool. I think we can speak of a pool when each connection in the pool has the same database(SID)/user/password. I'd really interested in your goals with this architecture. I read a lot of your mails, Oleg, and I liked them very much, you must have some trick here :-). NM

>>> Oleg Broytmann wrote > Not my solution, but database programmers/admins. [...] > They (DB programmers/admins) calls it "security". It's really not a very good solution. Aside from anything else, you've still got this one application at the front with all the different connections - how can you be sure that the wrong user can't get a different user's connection? More importantly, this _won't_ scale. If I have 20 users, that will be 20 connections held open. Yuk. And say I want to open 2 or 3 connections per user, to remove the single-threaded nature of it, and it's way way worse. Plus you've got to then worry about the connections being established correctly each time, reallocation of resources when they time out, &c &c &c. Aside: if you're using ZOracleDA to talk to Oracle, and for some reason your Oracle connection gets trashed - restart Zope. Don't bother trying to just close and re-open the connection, I've found that leads to a world of pain. It sometimes works. And other times it makes bad things happen. (I'm also somewhat unconvinced that Oracle's all that secure - would you expose an Oracle server to the internet? I don't think so... :) Anthony

installation on RH 6.1
by Rohan Veal 20 Jan '00

20 Jan '00

Hi, I have a standard RH6.1 installation, and when compiling the zope src distribution (Zope-2.1.2-src.tgz) with pcgi, I get an error, "cp: /usr/lib/python1.5/config/Makefile.pre.in No such file or directory". I cannot find how to fix this. There is no Makefile.pre.in located anywhere in my python directory tree. Any suggestions. tejay

Problems with PCGI
by Nolan Darilek 20 Jan '00

20 Jan '00

First, a few quick disclaimers: 1. I'm not subscribed to the list, so please CC me with any replies. 2. I know this is probably an RTFM-ish question; I just can't find which FM to read. :) And, I've scanned a few, but I'm obviously doing something stupid and newbieish. :) I'm trying to set up Zope on my local Roxen test webserver. After a few failed attempts of my own, I decided to be smart and search zope.org for docs. I found the great Zope/Roxen howto, and everything almost works. I'm trying to have all URLs on my box directed to Zope, and I'm having a few problems with the Zope rewrite rules posted at http://www.zope.org/Members/Bill/Documentation/RoxenZope. Here is how my browser, Emacs/W3, renders the table with the Roxen rewrite rules: | | ||Preferred ReWrite Ruleset || | | | || || | | | || ^/([A-Z])(.*) || | | | || /Zope.cgi/$1$2 ^/([a-z])(.*) || | | | || /Zope.cgi/$1$2 ^/([0-9])(.*) || | | | || /Zope.cgi/$1$2 || | Do I need to concatenate any of those lines? Whenever I try going to any URL other than /, I get Roxen's default 404 error message. Another problem which I've noticed is that, though I've intended to have Zope generate all HTTP content and use Roxen for all other server-related tasks, Zope is placing :8080's in the URL, thus redirecting requests to ZServer. This isn't what I want. I thought that using the -p option would remove the :8080, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I'm using the Debian Zope package, which lacks the start and stop scripts referenced in many of the docs which I've read. It instead uses a zopectl script, with a ZOPEOPTS variable in /etc/init.d/zope which passes arguments to zopectl. I've set ZOPEOPTS to "-p /usr/lib/cgi-bin/Zope". Can anyone recommend anything else? I'm sure that I'm committing Common Newbie Mistake #2356, but I'm completely clueless about how to fix this one. :) Thanks.

[Q] fsimport.py gone from Zope site?
by Darran Edmundson 20 Jan '00

I just spent 15 minutes searching for Brian Lloyd's fsimport.py on the Zope site but it seems to have disappeared. I'd appreciate a pointer to this priceless external method. Cheers, Darran.

Any Zope class can have properties, although if you want to customize the properties of each individual instance, you will need to pick up one of the two you mention (or create a new one in Python which subclasses PropertyManager.PropertyManager). In that case, select between them based on whether you want the item to be "folderish", that is, to allow adding other objects via Zope. -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com
