zopectl debug, 2.8.0 local zeo, Data.fs.lock file locking error

I am trying to use 'zopectl debug' for the first time with zope-2.8.0, local ZEO setup. It worked fine with zope-2.7.x and earlier. I am now getting a file locking error on Data.fs.lock, which stops the debug initialization at that point. The problem occurs whether I run zopectl as root or as the effective user ('zope') Can anyone familiar with local ZEO debugging on linux spot what might be the cause of the file locking error? The only modification I have made is to symlink in BTreeFolder2 from the Plone 2.1 svn bundle, which reportedly includes fixes identified after 2.8.0 release.

blacklisting referers and/or specific hosts

Hi, I have a zope site up and running which has recently had a *lots* of hits from a client (or clients) that show referers pointing at various gambling, meds, and loan sites. Requests only come in for the main page, not for the associated images, css, etc that should go with it. The consequence is that my server is working harder to service a client that isn't interested in what it has to say, and my Z2.log is now far less useful to me as all these bogus requests drown out most of the useful information. So, I'm wondering if there's a way to blacklist those clients that I don't like based on host/ip and/or on referer. If I hook into the traversal process in the same way as the virtual host monster objects do, could I check the request against my blacklist and then do a REQUEST.close()? Would that still appear in my logs? Does that even make sense? Is there a HTTP response code that I could return to these clients that would stop them being interested in my server? Any ideas much appreciated. Tim

Apache 2 + Zope can't gzip HTTP response body?

Can I use HTTP "Content-Encoding: gzip" for Zope if I use Apache 2? (And should I use gzip content-encoding?) The mod_gzip doesn't work with Apache 2, but instead it has mod_deflate. But mod_deflate can't chose which responses to gzip based on the MIME-type for responses that are coming through ProxyPass/ProxyPassReverse. And with Zope I can't rely on extensions (like .html), just on the MIME-type. Do I think these well? Somebody have solved this (gzip-ing the response bodies)? -- Best regards, Daniel Dekany

Starting a search from the correct folder

Understanding that Zope could do something like this has taken me quite a bit of time, although I still don't understand how this code works. What it actualy does is list the folders in the current folder and then allows me to select one which generates a subsequent list. What I'd like to do is skip the first list. If I want to generate a list of folders in say the 'groups' folder, how would I change the code above? -- John

strcoll_nocase gone after moving site?

I have to move a Plone site to another server (from some FreeBSD to a new Trustix), while also switching from Zope 2.7.x<5 to 2.7.6, and from Python 2.3.x<5 to Python 2.3.5. I have built everything from source, copied 1:1 the Products and Extension directory into a fresh new zope instance, also imported the exported Plone site into it. Was this procedure incorrect? Because till now the result is a disaster; things that worked till now suddenly don't work anymore. Anyway, this is what currently seems to win over me: DocumentTemplate\sequence\SortEx.py line 172: elif f_name in ("locale_nocase", "strcoll_nocase"): func = strcoll_nocase And here "global name 'strcoll_nocase' is not defined". I figured this is because in the same file earlier, line 136: import sys if sys.modules.has_key("locale"): # only if locale is already imported from locale import strcoll def strcoll_nocase(str1, str2): return strcoll(str1.lower(), str2.lower()) and there the condition of the if is false. If I add import locale before that if, then the error disappears. Any idea what's going on? What's new? - multi-field indexing and query support - multi-lingual support - configurable converters (through ZCML) - new indexing API (allowing you to hook your custom content types with TextIndexNG through Zope 3 adapters). Newbie Questions - many-many relationships? Zope 2 or 3?

Database Question Hello, I'm a newbie, so this is a newbie question! I am currently preparing to build a web application for property lettings, and I'm very interested in what Zope has to offer. The application will need to recognise a number of different objects, such as "houses", "prospective tenants" and "property owners" (the latter of which I may implement as user types, which would allow these people to log in and amend some of their own information.) I'm very interested in the Object Oriented way of doing things; for example, I'm thinking about implementing houses as a folder-ish object, so it would be able to contain photos of the house in question. The biggest stumbling block I am facing is how to do something "Relational" in an OO environment. Specifically, I've been scratching my head for a while about how to handle a many-many relationship: a property owner may own more than one house; conversely, a house may have more than one co-owner - consequently it's not appropriate to have either containing the other. I've googled for general information about handling many-many relationships in OO, and most of what I've come across has only indicated that it can be tricky! Having a look through past threads on this mailing list I've noticed a few references to mxmRelations (http://www.zope.org/Members/maxm/products/mxmRelations) which seems to match up - have I got the right end of the stick? Before I jump in with this I'd appreciate any advice or guidance you could provide - it'd be greatly appreciated. While Im on, Ive noticed that Zope 3 has been released. Is this now the recommended development environment, or am I better off sticking with Zope 2 for now, and porting my application once Zope 3 is a bit further down the line?
