cataloging SQL data
by George Runyan 11 Jan '00

11 Jan '00

can anyone give me a quickie HOWTO on cataloging SQL data? any gotchas would be appreciated. I havent started on the proof of concept (on NT ... ick!) but we are interested in cataloging a large set of data and using the Zope catalog to do the searching. the main reason we want the zope catalog is to give hand back a result set that is ranked by relevance (any have any experience w/ relevance ranking of search results?) what would the pro's or con's be for using Zope as the main method to access data inside a SQLServer? i.e. I'm thinking of Siteserver's catalog that has some form of linguistical summation (prob. not the right tech term)/abstraction of free-text fields. and siteserver kinda does some relevance ranking... in summary: I have a proof of concept to show how relevance would be incorporated by search results coming from Zope's catalog mechanism which would index sqlserver data. digicool has said they have done this w/ one of their clients. I have not seen much information on this in the public sector. I will most likely need this done by beginning of next week. questions FOR YOU: have you used zope's catalog for this? why wouldn't you? how does relevance play apart in the zCatalog? is there max. size a catalog should be? I'm not python literate enough to read the src and understand- nor do i have the time (imagine that!) many thanks, george runyan grunyan(a)emerging.com

How to write a method using DTML Method?
by Guy Davis 11 Jan '00

11 Jan '00

How would I convert the following Java code into DTML? This is just an example, I don't understand how methods are used in DTML. String getFirstName(String name) { String lastName = name.substring(0, name.indexOf(' ')); return (lastName); } I would like to see a DTML method which does this, how it is called and how the result is used in the calling method. RE: [Zope] Obtaining column names when using ZSQL method

Yeah, thanks, I'm using Oracle on Linux (for which I can interrogate the USER_TABLES or ALL_TABLES as well as DESCRIBE - from memory), and ODBC on WIN32. AFAIK there's no counterpart to DESCRIBE for ODBC but you have to rely on lower level ODBC functions to obtain column names, descriptions, etc. This info should be available to Zope and I'd prefer to get it from there if at all possible, for purposes of RDBMS independence and portability. I also require transactions, which AFAIK puts mySQL out of the picture. Apache + ZServer
by tonyr＠ep.newtimes.com 11 Jan '00

11 Jan '00

There appears to be a very common, question swirling around the zope mailing list, how to integrate Zope & Apache. I thought I would chime in with my two cents. The following solution addresses: 1- Serving mixed Zope and static files via Apache. 2- Reduce the amount of work Zope has to do for non dynamic content (ie images) 3- Allow for serving from multiple Zope servers in a flexible manner. 4- All this within VirtualHost (I currently am trying SiteAccess) Here exerts from from my httpd.conf file: ==================================================================== Listen 192.168.30.100:80 Listen 192.168.30.107:80 Listen 192.168.30.108:80 FastCgiExternalServer /home/httpd/htdocs/zope/1 -host 192.168.30.100:8889 -pass-header Authorization FastCgiExternalServer /home/httpd/htdocs/zope/2 -host 192.168.30.103:8889 -pass-header Authorization <Directory /home/httpd/htdocs/zope/> SetHandler fastcgi-script </Directory> NameVirtualHost 192.168.30.100 NameVirtualHost 192.168.30.107 NameVirtualHost 192.168.30.108 <VirtualHost 192.168.30.100> ServerName www.vhostdomain.com ErrorLog /var/log/httpd/error_log CustomLog /var/log/httpd/access_log combined DocumentRoot "/home/httpd/htdocs" RewriteEngine on RewriteLog /var/log/httpd/rewrite_log RewriteLogLevel 0 RewriteMap servers rnd:/etc/httpd/conf/map.txt RewriteRule /(.*gif)$ http://192.168.31.150:8080/vhost/$1 [P,L] RewriteRule ^/$ - [S=1] RewriteCond /home/httpd/htdocs%{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -s [OR] RewriteCond /home/httpd/htdocs%{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -d [OR] RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} ^/icons.* RewriteRule ^/(.*) - [L] RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/(.*) /home/httpd/htdocs/zope/${servers:zope|1}/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,e=SITE:vhost,L] ProxyRequest on CacheRoot "/home/proxy/vhost" CacheSize 50000 CacheDefaultExpire 12 CacheGcInterval 2 </VirtualHost> ==================================================================== Here the "index" page ("/") is served via Zope, but that could easily be changed by removing the line RewriteRule ^/$ - [S=1]. Then Apache would serve the "/index.html" file if it exists. This solution will serve any file physically accessible in document root via the plain old Apache mechanisms. When a file is not found it will use Zope to serve the content. Also employed here is the proxy caching mechanism of mod_proxy to serve .gif files so that Zope is not having to serve these files for each request. One more feature here is a random rewrite map to pull zope content from multiple zope servers. This is just the beginning phases of a broader load balancing solution that would allow for dynamic selection from a pool of active Zope servers, with possible classing Zope servers as having changeable ZODB or R/O ZODB. Then mapping which URLs should be served via which server(s). This rewrite map file can be altered while Apache is running and the changes dynamically reloaded via the mod_rewrite engine. This would allow an external monitoring process to alter the map file based on Zope server loads and/or availability. This is not the entire picture but I think it's enought to put out here and get some feedback. I will write this up as yet another Apache Zope HowTo if you think is is a worthy approach. Does anyone have extensive experience using the SiteAccess Product with ZDiscussions and/or Catalog Aware ZClasses? This is one sticking point we are having with serving VirtualHost, via one Zope ZODB. (Actually are there any other alternatives to SiteAccess that people are using?) There are two possiblities: 1) sha got turned off somehow (uncomment the 'sha' module in Python-1.5.2/Modules/Setup), not likely. 2) the Zope installer is not using the same python you compiled. likely. RedHat comes with Python 1.5.2, so even the system python should have sha. Ensure that the python found first in your path is exactly the same one that you compile yourself (you can use 'which python' from bash). -Michel

This is almost certainly due to the fact that they have the digests configured with a max size or max messages limit, _and_ as daily. Thus you get a digest in the morning when it "fills up" and another in the wee hours as the last of the previous days traffic. Obtaining column names when using ZSQL method
by Nerlich, Andrew 11 Jan '00

11 Jan '00

Warning: Zope newbie alert I would like to be able to take a ZSQL method like select * from customer and generate a table or form of column name/value pairs like name john smith age 35 title programmer without having to feed Zope the column names explicitly. Such a facility would IMHO be very useful for generation of prototype document templates from RDBMS tables. I thought something like (the SQL above is in a ZSQL method called lookup_customer): <table border> <dtml-in lookup_customer size=50 start=query_start> <dtml-in sequence-item> <tr> <td><dtml-var sequence-key></td> <td><dtml-var sequence-item></td> <tr> </dtml-in> </dtml-in> might do the job, but it fails with a type error "unsubscriptable object" on the sequence-key line. sequence-index will work instead of sequence-key. On rereading the DTML Reference (and using a good deal of guesswork) it appears that sequence-key may only apply to "pure" Zope objects and not extend to SQL-type objects. Can anyone help me with this? Also, is there a way through DTML or Python to find out the type (varchar, number, etc) of each column? Zope has access to at least some of this info, otherwise search interfaces would not work on select * queries. TIA. Missing Module sha when installing Zope from Source.
by Don Undeen 11 Jan '00

Hi there, I've been trying for a while to install MySQL, Python, Zope, MySQLdb, and ZMySQLDA. All from source. I've started with a fresh install of Redhat 6.1. I want to use Zope with my MySQL databases. I'm sure there are many of you out there doing the same thing. Was anyone documented teh whole procedure from start to finish? I installed Linux without Python, then got py152.tgz, unpacked and installed. I've gotten MySQL unpacked and installed from source as well. Beyond that, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. In Trying to install Zope next, by running "python w_pcgi.py" (or "python wo_pcgi.py" gives the same result) I get the following error (after it spends some time compiling): [... successful compiling results deleted] gcc -fpic -DXML_NS -Iexpat/xmlparse -Iexpat/xmltok -g -O2 -I/usr/include/python1.5 -I/usr/include/python1.5 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -c ./expat/xmltok/xmlrole.c gcc -fpic -DXML_NS -Iexpat/xmlparse -Iexpat/xmltok -g -O2 -I/usr/include/python1.5 -I/usr/include/python1.5 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -c ./expat/xmltok/xmltok.c gcc -shared pyexpat.o xmlparse.o hashtable.o xmlrole.o xmltok.o -o pyexpat.so make clean rm -f *.o *~ chmod 0711 /usr/local/APPS/Zope-2.1.2-src/var Traceback (innermost last): File "wo_pcgi.py", line 116, in ? if __name__=='__main__': main(sys.argv[0]) File "wo_pcgi.py", line 107, in main import zpasswd; zpasswd.write_access(home, user, group) File "/usr/local/APPS/Zope-2.1.2-src/zpasswd.py", line 90, in ? import sys, string, sha, binascii, whrandom, getopt, getpass, os ImportError: No module named sha Why would I be missing this? Is there more to getting the development version of python installed than just py152.tgz? Maybe if I can get Zope installed properly, I can make sense of some of the other errors I get when trying to install MySQLdb.py, etc.... Also, I have MySQL 3.22.39 installed. Is this going to create a problem with the Zope adapters? Is it my imagination, or should this be easier? Thanks for your help. Feel free to respond to this message in a personal email, or to this group, or both. Don Undeen dundee(a)gator.net
