wish list for zope in the new century
by Wei Tao 04 Jan '00

sorry for my poor english first :> I search the zope site for "todo list" but find nothing, and i can't catch the whole idea from those reports in "zope bug and feature ... collector". So, I want to discuss it in this maillist :> I rather appreciate Zope, especially the excellent OO design for a dynamic web site. But there are some areas Zope need to improve in order to be real killer in the web application server market: 1. integeration for a good HTML(DTML) WYSIWYG editor e.g. a dreamwaver extesion for zope is rather appreciated ( I am not sure whether dreamwaver is the best, any suggestion ? ) and a better integeration for a good python code editor&debugger(IDLE?) is also rather appreciated. 2. better error report and suggestion For a new babie, current error reports for mistakes in DTML are rather horrible. 3. better apache support Hey, I think ZServer is just fit for developing. Apache is the real world answer. Current support for apache is another shortcoming when comparing to mod_perl, mod_php and mod_jserv >_< 4. a good cache for performance Zope IS slow when load is high. and a good cache mechanism will solve most of the question. And here is my idea: <dtml-cache cache-id condition-for-cache-update> .... blah blah blah ... </dtml-cache> and a similiar function for external method. Two import point: a. A block of a page can be cached in order that the cache is efficient when the page contains, e.g., a counter; b. We only need to cache the most accessible blocks which are also most dynamic; Maybe we can steal some code from Squid :) 5. more killer app based on Zope like squishdot e.g. a good full-function forum based on Zope... Perhaps many people comes to Zope just because of squishdot :> 6. open source for ZEO development It is rather disappointing to see the door and window are closed for ZEO's development :<< 7... your opinion?

Updated How-To: Using Apache with ZServer (NOT Zope.cgi)
by anser 04 Jan '00

My How-To on using Apache with ZServer has been updated: http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver/ There are now examples for a partially Zoped document space as well as a completely Zoped virtual host. I don't have a complete solution for the SERVER_URL problem, but I do have a workable method for many cases. You need to get that variable set properly or the proxied pages pop up with bad HREF's all over the place. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions, especially for the Zope coding problems mentioned at the end.

>>> Pavlos Christoforou wrote > I will add _force_new_session as well as a corresponding method. Maybe we > should decide on some common interface/API to make it easier for users to > switch from one to the other. Excellent plan. I can see two interfaces to define: The interface to the Session object (the thing that's called to populate REQUEST with the SESSION object) The interface to the SESSION object (the dictionary-like thing that's inserted into the REQUEST). SESSION API: SESSION.getName() - returns the session id of the current session. Supports dictionary interface, that is: SESSION.__getitem__ SESSION.__setitem__ SESSION.__delitem__ SESSION.keys SESSION.values SESSION.items SESSION.has_key SESSION.clear SESSION.update Query: should it also support __getattr__ ? I've resisted it so far as 'feature duplication', since there's nothing that you absolutely _need_ it for - e.g. for <dtml-with> you can just write <dtml-with SESSION mapping> to put the SESSION values in the namespace. SESSION.copy - unimplemented, raises error. SESSION.get -- alias for SESSION.__getitem__ SESSION.set -- alias for SESSION.__getitem__ Session object API: Session.__call__(REQUEST=None, session_id=None, noCookie=None, validSession=None) if noCookie is set, do _not_ set a cookie. if validSession is set, do _not_ create a new session if none is specified, or if the one specified is invalid. if session_id is set, use this ID to connect to an existing session (and populate REQUEST.SESSION and any cookie, as appropriate). if REQUEST._force_new_session = 1, then always create a new session. returns the string ''%sessionName (useful for debugging, use dtml-var Session, rather than dtml-call Session. Session.cookie_name - string containing the name of the session cookie. This list is just cribbed from the CVS of release 0.2.3... Did I miss anything - and is there anything from FSSession that should be included? Anthony

>>> Pavlos Christoforou wrote > Right now a call to "FSSession.clear()" will nuke the data, but for > compatibility with Anthony's SQLSession I will add the _force_new_session > option. BTW why should someone want to change the Session ID? Say you've got a site which stores user preferences and the like, and stores the user's session id in a cookie. When someone uses the same computer, and goes to the web site, they'll see something like <P>Welcome, <dtml-var "SESSION['name']"> (if you are not <dtml-var "SESSION['name']">, <a href="?_force_new_session=1">click here</a>)</P> This allows you to easily refresh the user's session. This is also useful if you allow a user to reattach to a session from a different PC. Anthony, who still needs to write up a bunch of use cases for sessions.

Zope/Linux/Oracle - Cannot establish DB connection
by Nerlich, Andrew 04 Jan '00

04 Jan '00

I have successfully installed Zope-2.0.1 (from the RPM) and ZOracleDA-2.1.0 over RedHat 6.0 for Intel x86. I am using Oracle 8.0.5.0.0 for Linux which runs SQLPlus, etc. just fine. The ZOracleDA install passes the DCOracle_test.py script when run from root and the dba account, so AFAIK everything s/b hunky dory and I have established (to myself at least) that I am not a complete moron. However, I am unable to set up a ZOracleDA connection and connect to Oracle. I can set up a connection object without connecting immediately, but subsequent connection attempts on this object fail. The browser (NC 4.6) gives me a "The document returned no data. Try again later or contact the server's administrator." message. Inspection of the /var/zope directory shows a sqlnet.log file which contains the following connection string: (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)(PROGRAM=oracle)(ARGV0=oracle)(ARGS='(DE SCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)))')(DETACH=NO))(CONNECT_DATA=(C ID=(PROGRAM=)(HOST=localhost.localdomain)(USER=nobody)))) This fails with a number of errors TNS-12206 TNS-12545 TNS-00515 The Linux distro of Oracle does not include error message docs :-( But a copy of the WinNT docs I have does not include TNS messages over c TNS-05000 but does mention TNS-00515. This is a "Target not found" message - meaning either the Oracle executable cannot be found or the node cannot be found. The documentation indicates the the ORACLE_SID must be included in the bequeath protocal connection string, and it is notably absent from the above. I have put all my Oracle environment variables (ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME, etc., and a PATH entry to the Oracle /bin directory) in /etc/profile. However, I am using nobody as the Zope user ID, and I cannot remember whether a non-login account such as nobody will execute /etc/profile or not. If not, how is Zope going to find out where oracle is and what the SID is? Should I use another account or is there some other way to pass the environment variables to ZOracleDA? Or is there some other problem? I have looked at various pieces of code, but have done no work with Python before, and haven't done anything professionally with Unix or Oracle for over 12 months, and that was a a developer, not a DBA. Any ideas as to how to attack this problem will be gratefully received TIA Andrew Andrew Nerlich Strategic Operating Solutions Pty Ltd (02) 9966 8707 0418 407 833 ajn(a)sosos.com.au

OK, that looks like it. When I stopped ZServer (which was originally started by init on boot) and restarted it from a logon (which would have run /etc/profile where all the Oracle environment variables were initialised), I was able to connect. It looks like I need to set these ORACLE_ environment variables in my startup scripts. Is it a good idea to do this in /etc/rc.d/init.d/zope, or would you recommend doing it somewhere else? BTW, Rob, I am extremely impressed by your prompt response. Many thanks.
