Hi. I am trying to use zope to create a site where all staff can upload content prepared any old how into a few directories (say using netscape's composer or maybe word save as html etc). I have created a method called viewer which basically says <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var "_[file]"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> which I want to call from the search page or in the index_html of each folder with something like ... ... <dtml-in "objectItems(['DTML Document','Image','File'])"> <dtml-if "_.getitem('id',1) != 'index_html' and title != ''"> <li><a href="viewer?file=<dtml-var id>"><dtml-var title></a> etctetc ... or even better from the catalog ... ... <a href="viewer?file=<dtml-var "catalog.getpath(data_record_id_)">"> <dtml-var title></a> ... this doesn't work whereas using the output from the site-map examples works but only for the directory you are in too not subfolders. (same as catalog but at least it partly works) eg. ... !--#in "objectItems(['DTML Document','Image','File'])"--> <li><a href="viewer?file="></a> etctetc ... I have to be doing something wrong. My aim is to always view objects via another object thus not having to have any dtml in the content document (so anyone can submit stuff without mucking up the site look, navigation etc by omitting/erasing/knowing about headers and footers, really) Make any sense? Been done before? I am so close and yet so far .... help desperately needed - been at this for a few days now, come full circle, tres depressing. Yours hopefully Jonathan jonathan(a)home-all.org.uk

>Good Question! The answer is with __setstate__. Hmmm. This just might work. Thanks. I'm assuming then that this 'upgradablility' must be designed into the 'version 1' of the product in order to let it essentially be self upgrading? Are you aware of any working examples of this in action?

Interesting article

Many of you may have seen it, but I stumbled across "Philip and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing":http://photo.net/wtr/thebook/index.html last night, and am in the process of reading it. It is a careful exposition of the principles underlying the kinds of sites I want to build, and which I think most Zope users would like to, as well. The author, Phil Greenspun, is the architect of the Ars Digital Community System, a free toolkit for building portal/community sites using Tcl and AOLServer on top of Oracle. -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com

The old instances of your objects will have their __setstate__ methods called when they are activated from the database into memory. These are instances created with the _old_ code. But when they are activated, their _new_ setstate is called (because you just upgraded, right?) and that method can be prepared to take any action it wants to 'upgrade' the instance. Often this includes defining new instance variables and manipulating the object in some way by calling methods on 'self'. If your product is ZClass based, your ZClass can subclass a Python class that defines a __setstate__ for your ZClass. -Michel > > Thanks a bunch. > > > > > > > > _______________________________________________ > Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org > http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope > No cross posts or HTML encoding! > (Related lists - > http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce > http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev ) >

In this connection groups (as in Unix) are > implemented just > by putting the Zope user folders in the right place. You could do it that way. Or you can just give all the users in one group the same role. A user can have more than one role at one time, the permissions that a user has is the union of the permissions of all the roles that user has at that time. > When I > want to have > a more centralized user administration I'd need something > like a group > attribute for it, so I could give certain roles (in principle > I'd just need > an editor role) dependent on the user belonging to a certain group. Give them the editor role and a group role. You can have any number of various group roles. > AFAIK none of the products USerDB, GUF oder etcUserFolder > provides hooks for > this. But they do allow you to store mulitple roles (well, not etcUserFolder, but you can define default roles to folder users and assign them roles dynamically). -Michel

Upgrading a product
by rgines＠purina.com 15 Dec '99

15 Dec '99

Ran into an interesting thought yesterday which I have not seen addressed in this discussion list. Let's say that I create a Zope product and create a distribution for it calling it version 1.0. All is well and good, this product becomes successful and it is in use across hundreds of Zope based web servers. Six months go by and through the assistance of my Open Source friends and my own coders, we have a brand new awesome version which we are calling version 2.0. This new version is installed and when a Zope server is restarted; all is well. Let's say the product allows you to create a container (product folder) which stores all of the primary methods and controls customized to your particular installation. In the container are the objects of interest with their own sets of properties. Here is the question. Our new version has new methods, properties and controls for the container and new objects for the container now have new properties to them. So that users of this product do not need to start from scratch, how would the old (version1) objects get upgraded to match new objects created under our new version 2 of the product? I can think of a few methods that all seem very ugly to me. I was hoping that someone has thought through this and may have some suggestions. Thanks a bunch.

Newbie : Zope publishing of Static pages
by Satheesh Babu 15 Dec '99

15 Dec '99

Hi all, I'm new to Zope, knows li'l bit of Python. Here is my situation, in a new job. 1) We have a fairly big site (25 departmental sections, 2000-1500 pages) 2) All the pages are static (Yeah! you want to change the look of pages in your site, you edit all these files, or call a perl regex master :-( 3)What we want is a publishing tool, which can help webmasters to maintain the site and to delegate responsibility to departmental contact points to maintain their sections. 4)From what I fiddled around with Zope, this is perfect tool. 5)But, we've an IIS server running which serves the pages. My question is, can I use Zope to manage the website? I know Zope stores the HTML pages in its own database (right?). What I love to have is some situation just like that, but all those facilities actually correspond to the files in the IIS root folder. (I checked localFS product, but I'm not sure how to use that for such a situation). One *silly* way is to go to each page in the Zope site, save the HTML in the IIS's root directory (He He! what about using "wget"?). But I think it is really a stupid solution, *I AM A ZOPE NEWBIE* !!! (but I can use that - make wget run every 2 hours to automatically update the site!). If you have some pointers, PLEASE let me know! (Well, all this can be avoided if I'm able to use Zserver to serve up pages - for reasons I can't explain, I need to stick to IIS. May be Apache, if I cry out loud!). TIA VSB ~ V.Satheesh Babu sbabu(a)tnc.org . . http://www.csoft.net/~vsbabu/ /V\ - Duct tape is like the force. Re: little problem with Zope

Dear Sirs, following on the reply of Mike Pelletier: yes the password given in the password file is: '%s' I downloaded Zope for Linux about 2 months ago (sorry, don't now the version because I am in my office), but it was only yesterday that I installed it. Unfortunately the command "python zpasswd.py access" reports an error. Shall I maybe just delete the installation and download a newer version of Zope? How did you obtain and install Zope, and what version was it? You may use the 'zpasswd.py' program to reset the superuser password. In the Zope directory, type 'python zpasswd.py access'. In future, please direct questions about Zope to support(a)zope.org, or the mailing list, zope(a)zope.org.
