Zope 2.1 does NOT work with NT Apache!

You have to get a Zope.cgi from a non-binary distribution, I'm afraid. Why this is, I cannot tell. It worked under IIS. I have no experience with apache, but I do have with setting up Zope (2.0.1, but it should be the same) under IIS. Probably IIS is (even) more tricky, but the service and pcgi part should be the same > > The documention is insufficient, because it is unix-specific; it talks > about passing command line options to Zope, but Zope on NT can be ran as > a Service, and how to pass command line options then? > Um, you;ll have to hack the registry for that. Look in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ <Service Name>\Parameters\start To get pcgi working for IIS you have to add '-p X:\IIS\CGI-BIN\zope.pcgi' If I understood it rightly, the service is more or less responding to the same commandline options as z2.py (in fact it is just another way to start up z2.py). > There may be a bug, as a manually constructed Zope.cgi makes the Zope > installation 'spin'. You might want to use the utilities in the pcgi directory for checking your pcgi setup against pcgifile.py. Check out <zope-home>pcgi\win32\README.NT for (some) more information. > > See my previous mail to this list for more information. > > I can't get it to work at all, and I need to get it to work within the > week. Any help would be appreciated. I suppose Kamon Ayeva's draft on win32 installation could help you out at least for a part, or did you already consult that (even though it is mostly about IIS)? see http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zdp/1999-October/000830.html good luck Rik

"Part of the problem with Zope, quite honestly, is that it doesn't play by the rules set forth by the rest of the application-server field..." Some would say that's a feature :)

New site using Zope technology
by Bruno Mattarollo 08 Dec '99

08 Dec '99

Hello... I am glad to announce our first public beta of the site we have been developing for the last month. It's all done in Zope served through Apache. We have some glitches to work, but it's already functional. It's a site with financial information for Argentina. I want to thank Digital Creations for their software, all the people on this list to give me invaluable feedback on problems that I had and of course invite everybody to take a look at the site. /B Bruno Mattarollo bruno(a)gaiasur.com.ar

Acquire variable for ZCatalog indexing?
by Art Hampton 08 Dec '99

08 Dec '99

I asked this previously, and got no replies. I'll give it one more shot. When making a Z Catalog of a certain class of object, is it possible to acquire a variable from parent objects? I'd like to define category_id as a property of a folder, and then have my Z Catalog pick up that property when it is indexing the objects in the folder. Is this currently possible? If not, wouldn't it be a handy enhancement? :)

Zope stability
by Thomas Duterme 08 Dec '99

Hello Everyone, We are using Zope for one of our sites but Zope died as of yesterday. (refer to Chas' posts) This was totally out of the blue and is quite shocking. (Zope is still down after 24 hours) The question I'd like to raise to the entire list regards Zope's stability. We are running Zope integrated with Apache off FreeBSD3.2 . As far as I know, this is not such an exotic setup (probably rather common?). As Chas explained previously, Zope just suddenly died. Teodore also had the same error occur and solved it by rebooting his server. How often has this occured with other people? Are there any good solutions regarding providing a backup in case Zope does die? (and keep the site running) Are there any serious Zope instability issues which need to be discussed and alerted? TIA, Thomas

In the Control Panel, go to 'Database' and then click on the 'Cache Parameters' tab. There you can: Set the number of objects in the cache. Define the minimum idle time before the cache 'swaps out' an object. -Michel

Zope woes continue - server going down regularly. (possible solution)
by Cayce Ullman 08 Dec '99

>>> Alternatively, the server just hangs and doesn't respond >>> (but ps -aux shows the process is running). >> >>Is it spinning? (consuming 100% CPU resources?) or hung? (consuming >>none..) I noticed a couple of weeks ago that my Zope, started spinning when I hit a certain page 5 or 6 times. I noticed that this page was different from the others as it tried to do a Zope.app(). This was interesting cause the actual Zope.app() call worked, except it would eventually hose the server. I figured I was just doing something wrong and figured out another way to do it. Anyway, here's how to reproduce the problem : Create a external method that looks like this : import Zope def helloworld(self): x = Zope.app() return "Hello World" --------- If you call that external method 5 or 6 times it will crash your Zope. Also, if you attempt to do this inside a Python product it will have the same effect. Chas, my suggestion to do you is search all of your external methods and all of your 3rd party python products for anyone importing Zope. Just an aside, for those of you who don't know, the reason anyone would want to do an import Zope, Zope.app() inside an external method is that allows you to get at other objects in your site without explicitly having to pass them in. I assume that isn't supposed to be done, and Zope.app() is for debugging only. Cayce __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. The Zope debugger (based on the python debugger) works quite well I think. There is a howto on it somewhere... > I've just > downloaded > DDD & pydb to give them a try DDD and idle could be cool options, but someone needs to take the time to integrate them with Zope, I've never gotten either to work well debugging Zope. > but I am interested in using > ZMonitor (not > much docs about it > or did I miss something?) It is useful for debugging, but not stepping into or over code, or setting breakpoints, or all that jazz. if you said: import pdb pdb.set_trace() in the monitor, then the Zope process would jump into the debugger *but on the controlling terminal* not the monitor client (your monitor sessions would be locked out) If Zope has detached from its terminal, then it would just hang waiting on input it will never get. > btw, How exactly is MrCreosete (spl?) working and how can it be used? Mr. Creosote allows you to use python code to 'spew' messages to a simple UDP server running somewhere. This way in your code you can dump data for logging and debugging: if foobar: spew('Everything is foobar!') This shows up on the other end of Mr. Creosote. > > Second, ppl must undestand that they are using a *free* > product. Yeah it would be cool if we were aware of it too! ;) > Also I have a feeling DC is not soo happy to keep an online hot update > of bugs and > instability issues when these might compromise it to commercial > parteners. Hmm.. I don't know of any bug that would compromise a customer, we can allways state them in anonymous terms. But when we find bugs that hurt our customers, we fix them right away, so there is not much point in a public display of them because they are allready fixed, there is not much value earned in this. Further, you can track the CVS login messages mailing list of you want the blow by blow description of every bug fix checked in (http://www.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-checkins) > So they would > first like to have an inner look @ problems then announce the Zope > comunity. > But from our point of view, we want to know everything :-) It's all out there man. -Michel

Cache question
by Bruno Mattarollo 08 Dec '99

Hello. I have a site running on Zope... We are having an increasing number of hits... Not much right now but increasing... Is there a documented way to change the cache parameters to reduce the "connect time" to our Zope? I mean, sometime ago on this list there was a similar problem with the Zope.org site and was solved by simply changing the cache parameters... TIA /B

Zope 2.1 does NOT work with NT Apache!
by Martijn Faassen 08 Dec '99

08 Dec '99

Hi there, I apologize for writing such a strong title, but I can't get Zope 2.1 to work with NT Apache at all, and my previous message (more extensive) describing my problems went unanswered. I realize installation issues are an impopular topic. The binary distributation is insufficient, because no Zope.cgi is included. The documention is insufficient, because it is unix-specific; it talks about passing command line options to Zope, but Zope on NT can be ran as a Service, and how to pass command line options then? There may be a bug, as a manually constructed Zope.cgi makes the Zope installation 'spin'. See my previous mail to this list for more information. I can't get it to work at all, and I need to get it to work within the week. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Martijn
