Zope and FTP, WebDAV
by Eron Lloyd 01 Nov '99

Hello all. What's the proper way to log into a Zope site running ZServer using an FTP client? I heard you can do this in emacs, too? What about WebDAV - is there any info on this? Thanks in advance, Eron

Re: [Zope] DTML: calling a method
by Kevin Dangoor 01 Nov '99

01 Nov '99

Someone may have done a howto on this, but I'm not sure. The basic format is: <dtml-var "amethod(_.None, _, arg1='foo', arg2='bar')"> (The _.None is the target object for the method, and _ is the namespace. You need to include these (most importantly, the namespace) so that the method knows the context that it is being called in and has access to the normal set of variables.) Re: [Zope] Altering product instance changes all instances!
by Kevin Dangoor 01 Nov '99

01 Nov '99

D'oh! This is actually a HOWTO that I meant to write 3 or 4 weeks ago. You can check out KM|Net News. My constructor clones DTML Methods (instead of Images), but it was pretty easy and works completely within DTML. I also added a "Defaults" tab so that you can easily plug the latest "default" version into an individual instance. Here is Albert Kinderman's summary of our discussion from October 1. [quote] In your xProduct, create a DTML document (or method) with id default. This is at the same level as the xClass, xClass_add, xClass_addForm, and xClassFactory. [NOTE: Kevin says to put the default in the xClass. Try it either way.] In your xClass_add, include within the <dtml-with "xClass.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> the lines <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('data',default.document_src(REQUEST,RESPONSE))"> <dtml-call "manage_addDTMLDocument('default','',data)"> [changed in the obvious way for a DTML Method] along with any property sheet management call (as explained in the comment in the standard xClass_add). Now when you create an instance of x, the document default will be automatically created within the instance created. Since default is inside of the instance, I believe you must have ZObjectManager as one of the base classes. [I haven't tried it without ZObjectManager as a base class, but I know it works when you do.] [end quote] Kevin -----Original Message----- From: Edd Dumbill <edd(a)usefulinc.com> To: Michel Pelletier <michel(a)digicool.com> Cc: Edd Dumbill <edd(a)usefulinc.com>; zope(a)zope.org <zope(a)zope.org> Date: Monday, November 01, 1999 12:54 PM Subject: Re: [Zope] Altering product instance changes all instances! >On Mon, Nov 01, 1999 at 11:52:20AM -0500, Michel Pelletier wrote: >> Edd Dumbill wrote: >> > >> > Hi >> > >> > For my SiteSummary [1] product, I have a default image that is stored as a >> > subobject in my ZClass. >> > >> > An instance of the product can upload a new image to replace it. >> > >> > Unfortunately that ends up replacing the image in _all_ instances of the >> > product. >> > >> > This is not the desired behavior! >> >> But it is probably the correcy behavior. > >Yes, I figured so > >> It sounds like maybe you want your object to be an ObjectManager, and >> contain your Image. > >My object subclasses ObjectManager already. ANN: First beta of ClickTracker product released
by Petru Paler 01 Nov '99

01 Nov '99

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that I uploaded a development version of the ClickTracker product. You can get it at http://www.zope.org/Members/ppetru/ClickTracker The README file: ClickTracker clickthrough logging system Description: This product logs clickthroughs to foreign (or local) URLs in a SQL database. The data gathered with it is useful to generate reports about where your site's visitors go. Usage: Untar and ungzip the archive into you Zope directory and restart Zope. Make sure that a database connection is available and that a table with the following structure exists: CREATE TABLE clickthrough_log ( local_url varchar(255) not null, foreign_url varchar(255) not null, entry_date date, ); Add a ClickTracker using Zope's management screens (the predefined id is 'r'). After that convert the HREFs you want to monitor after the following model: href="http://www.foo.com" -> href="r?t=http://www.foo.com" Description of the SQL schema: local_url contains the full local URL (ex: http://www.myzopeserver.com/links/directories) foreign_url contains the full foreign URL that the user clicked (ex: http://www.yahoo.com) entry_date contains the date when the clickthrough was logged Bugs: The SQL method uses the now() function which (I think) is MySQL-specific. Does anyone know a database-independent way to get the current time ? Todo: - it should be possible to change the logging table name - report generation Contact ppetru(a)coltronix.com for suggestions, bug reports, complains and patches :) -Petru

FYI: PORPIGgies meeting; Zope talk tonight
by Amos Latteier 01 Nov '99

01 Nov '99

Hi, Just a reminder that tonight at 7pm is the PORPIG (Portland, Oregon Python Interest Group) meeting. I'll be speaking about Zope, so if you're in Portland (or can get there by 7pm tonight ;-) this is your chance to ask Zope development questions in person. Plus there are free eats! -Amos P.S. For more info about PORPIGgies get in touch with Ray Price (ray(a)unival.com) Amos Latteier mailto:amos@digicool.com Digital Creations http://www.digicool.com -- The next meeting is scheduled for November 1, 1999 and will feature Amos Latteier presenting "Extending Zope in Python" He'll cover the basic avenues for extending Zope in Python, including external methods, zclass base classes, and Python products. The bulk of the talk will be tutorial on building a simple Zope product in Python. He'll explain the basic Zope services that a Python product needs to be aware of: object publishing, persistence, security, and the management framework. The talk will include many examples. Refreshments are once again sponsored by Randall Burns. If you want to attend, you must subscribe to the PORPIG list at www.egroups.com. Building security will only admit list subscribers. Meeting time is 7pm to 9pm at the Benjamin Franklin Building, One SW Columbia, Portland Oregon.

Well that's good timing then. Amos made the HTTP header change Thursday night and I upped the cache Friday morning. --Paul > -----Original Message----- > From: Thomas B. RE: [Zope] python -O
by Brian Lloyd 01 Nov '99

> Recently I tried to use "python -O", stopped Zope and > asked Apache to > restart it. Zope didn't came up, and I got "temporary > unavail". I removed > option "-O", and Zope started up ok. > > Question: What are pros and cons to run Zope under "python > -O"? If there are pros, how can I achive that? Oleg, I suspect that this is because PCGI is not expecting arguments to the Python binary (it uses exec to get python started, and it's probably passing the arg along as part of the program name). If you use the "start" script with Zope 2.x, you can add -O there and it seems to work fine - you just can't do it if PCGI is starting the process. Note that many of the Python command line options have corresponding environment variables that can be set as an alternative - if that is the case for the -O option, you should be able to set the env. var in your PCGI resource file. As far as pros and cons, it may in theory be a little bit faster (my limited performance tests using -O didn't show much definitive improvement). On the con side, using the -O option removes some metadata from Python bytecode (line numbers?) which may make it more difficult for you to debug a Zope site. Yup, the site was much snappier this weekend. But it seemed to me it improved starting Friday sometime, so maybe there was also a network thing going on for me as well.
