From: Phil Harris <phil(a)wigwamweb.net> >There was a mighty long discussion about this some time ago, search the >archives. > >It seems there is good reason for the text not to wrap. > Must have been before I joined. But I don't agree that text shouldn't wrap. Sure, <PRE>-formatted code samples should be left formatted as is, but I mean regular text. For example, in the main zope.org page, the middle column with "Welcome to Zope.org" should be allowed to wrap, but it doesn't. So the navigation bars and the text in the right hand column get truncated when you make your browser window a little narrow (not even excessively). I normally keep my browser at less than full screen (1024X768 resolution) and many people still use 800X600. Also, people set their browsers for different font sizes. Depending on your browser, these settings may or may not change the css font sizes. So it is not unlikely for people to experience truncated text. I don't think there is any "good reason" for this behavior. I also think that irritating aspects of a site tend to unconsciously reduce peoples' estimate of the competence of the product or its designers. So I think the main templates should be changed to reduce the chances of getting truncated text. I don't think this will interfere with the basic design of the template system for zope.org. I also don't mean to knock the designers of the site. I'd like to acknowlege them for their hard work on the site. I know it doesn't come easily! Tom Passin

python -O
by Oleg Broytmann 01 Nov '99

01 Nov '99

Hello! Usually I use Zope in PCGI-only mode (no ZServer), so Apache starts PCGIPublisher, if it's not loaded. PCGI resource file (Zope.cgi) uses "python" as the name for the python binary. Recently I tried to use "python -O", stopped Zope and asked Apache to restart it. Zope didn't came up, and I got "temporary unavail". I removed option "-O", and Zope started up ok. Question: What are pros and cons to run Zope under "python -O"? If there are pros, how can I achive that? Look at the main www.zope.org page. Drag your browser window until it is too narrow for the text. At some point as you make the window more narrow, the text in the right column will be cut off rather than wrap. Also notice that the navigation items in the upper right go off-screen to the right rather than wrap. It is this truncation that is annoying. Remember too, many people use 800 X 600 resolution on their browser, so pages appear much wider than with higher resolution. These people will be much more likely to encounter this behavior. In this particular case, the problem might not be with a table width per se, but could be with some images whose width is specified to be too large. Or maybe a combination. You can verify the role of the WIDTH attribute in preventing wrapping in tables by saving the Zope home page as a file. You can make the right-hand column and navigation items wrap better by making this change near the start of the <BODY>: <BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#000066" VLINK="#606060" TOPMARGIN="0" LEFTMARGIN="0" MARGINWIDTH="0" MARGINHEIGHT="0"> <BASEFONT FACE="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" SIZE="2"> <TABLE BORDER="0" CELLPADDING="0" CELLSPACING="0" WIDTH="100%"> <TR> <TD WIDTH="10" BGCOLOR="#000000" ALIGN=CENTER> </TD> <TD COLSPAN="2" BGCOLOR="#6699CC" VALIGN="TOP" WIDTH="300"><A HREF="/"><IMG SRC="/Images/zopelogo.jpg" ALT="Z Object BORDER="0"></A></TD> <TD BGCOLOR="#6699CC" VALIGN="TOP" ALIGN="RIGHT" WIDTH="99%" CLASS="welcome"> <TD BGCOLOR="#6699CC" VALIGN="TOP" ALIGN="RIGHT" xWIDTH="99%" CLASS="welcome"> Changing from "WIDTH" to "xWIDTH" inactivates the width statement. Reload the page. Now start making the browser window more and more narrow. You will see that the navigation section still wraps until the window gets much narrower than before. Also, the middle column now can wrap. Unfortunately, there still comes a time when the right column and navigation items stop wrapping and become truncated. I haven't yet been able to find what causes this. It must be the specification of some width or height, or maybe several interacting ones. Other Zope pages act in a similar way, but it often is not so noticable because one tends to look at the text in the middle rather than the navigation. But some pages with wide text or several text columns are more likely to get truncated. The old zope site has this problem more severely. Maybe there are too many interacting parts on the pages to completely solve the problem, but I would really appreciate some degree of improvement. Even the small change above makes the pages better for me, and, I am sure, many others too. Tom Passin

Why does pasting into a CatalogAware ZClass (not an instance, the ZClass itself) gives me: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: REQUEST Traceback (innermost last): File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_module File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 179, in publish File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 201, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: ElementWithAttributes) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 165, in publish File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: manage_pasteObjects) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 102, in call_object (Object: manage_pasteObjects) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/CopySupport.py, line 225, in manage_pasteObjects (Object: ElementWithAttributes) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/ObjectManager.py, line 264, in _delObject (Object: ElementWithAttributes) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/Products/ZCatalog/CatalogAwareness.py, line 129, in manage_beforeDelete (Object: CatalogAware) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/Products/ZCatalog/CatalogAwareness.py, line 186, in unindex_object (Object: CatalogAware) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/Products/ZCatalog/CatalogAwareness.py, line 156, in url (Object: CatalogAware) File /itamar/Zope-2.0.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/OFS/SimpleItem.py, line 316, in absolute_url (Object: CatalogAware) AttributeError: (see above)

Thanks Martijn -- that works fine! At the risk of sounding dumb, I don't quite understand it -- why does the 0th array element within object 'site.css' contain a pointer to the object itself and how would a Zope developer know this? I've been thru the Zope source and haven't come upon that particular construct. And naturally, what resides at other offsets? Re: [Zope] Announce: Where's the zope? => SVG

They bought Flash, BTW - it wasn't developed by Macromedia. >Of course, SVG is not supported in ANY of today's browsers. Thanks. I will check out 'gill'.. Yes indeed. There are many Lingo(Director) programmers who dspote Director's own power and virtues, are now disenchanted by MM and would like to see a _viable_ openSource cross_platform replacement. When MM bought Flash it was called futureSplash. To their credit Falsh has been greatly improved since that first download. FLash can be embedded very nicely into Director applications including Shockwave. Flash4 can also be embedded into Apple's Quicktime 4 which in turn can be now embedded in Adobe's new version PDF..[I have not personally tested this last option yet]. There is work being done on Java SVG player. I think this runs now - but will check and confirm. Wither way, it appears that very soon we will see players and broswer compatible solutions. The neglect of vector graphics by the web browser developers has to be one of the great mysteries of web development history. It is riduculous to take structured data and reduce to banwidth_heavy raster graphics which have 0 semantics. Duh. But finally peipke seem to be waking up. on erason is becaeu they can see for themselves the efficiency of FLash. But also the frustrations of a super fast format like that which does not possess universally accessible object semantics... Enter SVG, gil, XML-??? My main point of these posts is that comprehensive XML-based multimedia would be a very powerful and wonderful thing. And Zope[+Python] should be a brilliant component of that. One application I have stongly in mind is for 'smart-maps': animated hyperlinked maps - WEBGIS/WEBCAD/WEBWHITEBOARD Does anyone remember the original NCSA 'XCollage' ??. http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/vis/color/sites.html The beauty of an XML-based multimedia system with a Zope object system is that, for example, all the 'web map objects' of a distributed webGIS can be represented by DTML Methods and sets of these which pass messages to each other and thereby modify attributes, state etc. If you look at the scale, scope and complexity of WebGIS it is crying out for such an approach. The mechanisms in Zope whereby hierarchy and acquisition are bi-directional, allowing context to affect behavior is perfect for implementing an open multimedia webGIS. This is a killer app IMO, but requires significant elements to be in place. I detect all the ingredients now, but there is work to be done before we can have dinner!
