I took what I've learned from my Equation Tile product and moved it into the Poll product this morning. It now supports Zope 2.0.1, being subclassed via ZClasses, is CatalogAware and shows off a few tricks such as how to add those TALLER/SHORTER/ WIDER/NARROWER buttons for resizing text input boxes. It also shows how to have a method return an HTML fragment when called for embedding it into another page, or a standalone HTML source if called as it's own web page. I didn't have time to update the Tutorial document that comes with it. Perhaps later, or someone else is welcome to tackle it. You can find it at the bottom of my web page at: http://starship.python.net/crew/jrush/Zope/ I tried for some time to upload it to www.zope.org this morning, but the site was dog-slow and in read-only mode! Any attempt to add anything simply spun the indicator in Netscape, for over an hour for a 47K upload. Downloads worked but typically took 3-5 mins per page. Sheez! I hope they get the new servers soon. >What's the best way of forcing a product to reload? Deleting it, adding it >again and restarting Zope is becoming somewhat tedious. That's the way you do it -- yes it is tedious but considering how products hook into Zope, I doubt the Python reload technique will ever work for Products. -Jeff Rush

RE: [Zope] How do I accommodate two trees in one document?

If you use Frames (ick), it might be possible to have more than one tree. Unfortunately, you couldn't depend on the default cookies to hold the independant tree states correctly. Otherwise, no - only one tree per page. Sorry. - Ian C. more zope promotion in Melbourne, Australia tonight.
by Anthony Baxter 25 Oct '99

<shameless self-promotion> I'm going to be on radio RRR tonight (102.7FM) sometime between 7.20 or so and 8pm, chatting about Zope, and other bits and pieces. They have a computer and internet show, Byte Into It, and I'm one of the guests. I don't think RRR do web broadcasts, but the show has a webpage of sorts at http://www.rrr.org.au/program/byteIntoIt.html </shameless self-promotion> -- Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

Thanks! It works. I don't yet understand how, but > it works. When ZPublisher receives an HTTP request, it builds the REQUEST variable from the request header. In the case of POSTs, in addition the header the request also contains a body. When using the multipart/form-data encoding type, this body follows a standard MIME format, wherein each piece of named data is bundled in a "multipart" attachment. Uploaded "files" have a content type, file name and binary contents, usually base64-encoded. For each such attachment, ZPublisher creates a FileObject instance (see lib/Python/ZPublisher/HTTPRequest.py). This FileObject has a filename attribute, a headers dictionary attribute, and a file attribute. The file attribute behaves like a standard Python file, and contains methods such as tell(), seek(), read() and so forth. Given such a variable MyFile, the Python expression (MyFile.file.seek(0, 2) or MyFile.file.tell()) > 0 will yield the value 1 if tell() returns > 0. The seek() doesn't return anything, so it will evaluate to None. This is handy shortcut in the Python language to make verbose tests more compact. It does not enhance readability, but reduces typing and in the context of Zope, faster than doing each operation separately. Anyway, a simpler test is checking the file name. Just testing whether the filename attribute is empty should do it. Can't put ZClass inside itself
by Itamar Shtull-Trauring 25 Oct '99

25 Oct '99

I have a ObjectManager ZClass FooFolder, which is contained in another ObjectManager BarFolder. Product -> BarFolder ZClass -> FooFolder ZClass I cannot tell FooFolder to allow me to put another FooFolder into itself - I can tell FooFOlder to contain BarFolder, or any other object I can tell BarFolder to contain BarFolder, or any other object but FooFolders just don't show up in the list in Subobjects tab of FooFolder! The only reason I can think of is that FooFolder ZCLass is contained in another ZClass, but I can't think of a solution. -- Itamar - itamars(a)ibm.net ---------------------------o----------------------------------------------o Perl/Gimp Greeting Cards | Trust? dtml-with semantics
by John Goerzen 25 Oct '99

25 Oct '99

Hi, I have a situation like this. I am in a subdirectory ("subfolder" I guess) a few levels deep. I want to call a DTML method in /Boxes (that is, from the top). So, I first think, hmm, <dtml-var /Boxes/MyMethod>. No dice. Then I try: <dtml-with Boxes> <dtml-var MyMethod> </dtml-with> However, this dtml-with overrides some things from my document -- most importantly, id in this case. How can I solve this problem? Test on the content type of the file object, or check whether the file object's file attribute contains a non-zero file (eg., call seek(0, 2) and then check if tell() returns > 0). The following code illustrates the latter: <dtml-if "REQUEST.has_key('MyFile')"> <dtml-if "(MyFile.file.seek(0, 2) or MyFile.file.tell()) > 0"> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> > Best regards, > Samu Mielonen Hope this helps, -- Alexander Staubo http://www.mop.no/~alex/ The difference between theory and practice is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
