SMTP Success, sort of . . .
by Jerry.Spicklemire＠IFLYATA.COM 05 Oct '99

Hi Zope fans, For those of you equally stymied by a mailhost object that refuses to work, I finally got that picky little fellow functioning. There were two potential problems, both of which existed in my example. Remember the error message was: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: SMTP Error Error Value: Received error code 503 from SMTP: 503 Need RCPT (recipient) First, there can be no spaces before the "To:" in the recipient line. This most likely applies to other lines, such as From:, but I'm way too toasted to spend any more time on it. Of course, since I copied and pasted my template code directly from the Zope Documentation into my DTML method, I "knew" that it had to be "correct". What I didn't know was that the spaces that I copied were added for cosmetic effect in the context of an on-line document. Live and learn. Second, the mailhost line in the dtml "action" method must be followed immediately by the recipient information. An extra line feed will also cause smtp to fail. I honestly have no clue when or how that extra line feed crept in , but I can tell you with certainty that I was trying everything I could think of to get this sucker working, including lot's of stuff that made no sense whatever, and in an infinite range of combinations. Sadly, my instincts were correct. It was something totally dumb that was so "obvious" that it never occurred to the cognoscenti to mention it. These are the kinds of things that make anyone who knows smtp to say, "duh!", and anyone who is trying to duplicate text examples of a "working" system from "documentation" to wonder, "Why couldn't they just say that!". Having claimed success, it is in fact conditional. I have received mail sent from inside our firewall, out to an InterNet smtp host, which in turn was forwarded (back) to my internal E-Mail. However, mail from inside to inside seems to vanish. So, in fact it still doesn't really work, for our purposes. It would have been nice if I had stumbled upon this about 1000 iterations ago, and a month or two back, but the damage to Zope's reputation around here has already been done. It will be a lot harder to revive it from here on. Keep on keepin' on, Jerry Spicklemire

Icon archive?

Can anyone point be to a public domain archive of icons suitable for use with Zope? Re: [Zope] Any other ColdFusion coders out there?
by Tad Murphy 05 Oct '99

05 Oct '99

Paul, Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, there are some very interesting things with ColdFusion that people really need to know. These are things, such as the Win32 emulation under Solaris, that might affect peoples decision. I report, you decide. Anyway, as for Spectra, I'm under an NDA, but I can discuss the major parts of it that are public. First of all, as I said before, they have attempted to make an object publishing environment out of a non-object oriented programming language/application server. To answer your question, I do think that Spectra is limited by having CF as a foundation. I think that Spectra is *going to be* slow and clunky given it's CF architecture... try taking a procedural language and trying to write an application like you would in an object oriented language... it's simply going to be a bunch of work-arounds and quick fixes... it's not going to be clean code, it's not going to be elegant... it *might* work, but it will be clunky and slow... see what I mean? The one thing I must give Allaire credit for is the way that they have marketed Spectra... What they have done is taken a clunky, slow, hard to use product and marketed the hell out of it. The one thing missing from Zope is that kind of hardcore marketing. Zope can do everything Spectra will do, and it can do it NOW. And it can do it faster and better and is easier to use, is more extensible, etc. But, like I have seen from other posts on this list, at least Allaire tells you what you can do with Spectra. And, no offense to ColdFusion developers, but the majority of them are not that technically skilled so telling them what they can do and how easy it will be to implement is *just* what they want to hear. What's funny, is the exact same things would be much easier to implement in Zope. Hope that I answered your questions in a round about way. I like ColdFusion, but you have to take if for what it is...a procedural development environment... if you want to work with objects (and enjoy the benefits of doing so) then Zope is the obvious choice. I plan to offer up more data on the comparison of ColdFusion and Zope in the coming days... the problem I have in completing that comparison is that the comparison should be between Spectra and Zope... and a comparison between Python and CFML should be made since Zope is based on Python and Spectra on CFML... ;-) Hope this helped, Tad Murphy "cybertad" http://www.zope.org/Members/cybertad/ ----- Original Message ----- From: Paul Everitt <paul(a)digicool.com> To: Tad Murphy <murphyt(a)cybertad.com> Sent: Saturday, October 02, 1999 8:04 AM Subject: Re: [Zope] Any other ColdFusion coders out there? | | Tad-- | | Wow, this has been an incredibly instructive series of posts. RE: [Zope] version export
by Jay, Dylan 05 Oct '99

I'd also like to see see enhanced management of versions that includes the ability to list all the objects in a version, who and when they were edited. Undo changes of these objects from within the version. Diffs would also be good. > -----Original Message----- > From: Ethan Fremen [mailto:mindlace@majordomo.net] > Sent: Sunday, October 03, 1999 21:39 > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] version export > > > I was enthused with the idea of versions, because I have a remote and > local copy of the same site. Why does this work index_html =HTMLFile('my_dtml_doc', globals()) while this doesn't def index_html(self,REQUEST,RESPONSE): " " return HTMLFile('my_dtml_doc', globals())(self, REQUEST, RESPONSE) where my dtml-var calls fail.

Calendar Tag
by Joshua Brauer 04 Oct '99

Anybody know the status of the Calendar tag? I spent time working on a newer version of the tag to do some other formats so I know it was there this morning. This afternoon it doesn't show up in the product list.... # # # _____________________________________________ Joshua Brauer Box 915 http://www.brauer.org Fort Collins, CO 80522 Fax: (419) 793-4120 _____________________________________________ In flying I have learned that carelessness and overconfidence are usually far more dangerous than deliberately accepted risks. -- Wilbur Wright in a letter to his father, September 1900 _____________________________________________________

Re: [Zope] Accessing doc/methods in other directories..

This is sort of similar to some thoughts I'd had while hacking around in Zope. Suppose I have a bunch of utility ExternalMethods that I don't want cluttering up my root directory, and yet want to use them in various different places. Right now I put them all in a folder off of root called "bin," and then use <dtml-var "bin.method()"> to call them. But that hard wires the path into the call. Is there some way, other than acquisition, to specify something like an executable path? I know I can use various combinations of <dtml-with> to do what I want to do, but I'd rather be able to use something like the Python "import" method. Thoughts? dave

ODBC Setup
by Joshi, Sunit 04 Oct '99

I did unzip the ODBC file into the root directory of my ZOPE installation, which is e:\rpa and the file it dumped was sql.pyd. However how do I now setup the connection in ZOPE. The drop-down list of objects doesn't show an ODBC setup thanks Sunit

BASE and nonstandard ports (RE: [Zope] w3m (alternative to lynx) and Zope. ) and Zope. )
by Terrel Shumway 04 Oct '99

04 Oct '99

BTW: Mozilla currently has the same problem with <base> and non-standard ports. What document should I refer to when reporting the bug? RFC ??? -----Original Message----- From: Martijn Pieters [mailto:mj@antraciet.nl] Sent: Sunday, October 03, 1999 10:36 PM To: Anthony Baxter Cc: Sascha Matzke; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] w3m (alternative to lynx) and Zope. Hmm.... that would indeed be the cause of the misbehaving BASE tag. HTTPRequest constructs the BASE either from HTTP_HOST, or, if omitted, from SERVER_NAME and SERVER_PORT. You can confirm this by opening http://servername:serverport/path/to/Zope/REQUEST in w3m (in your case http://bespin:9090/REQUEST) and then look for the HTTP_HOST and SERVER_URL environment variables. If they read bespin, and not bespin:9090, then w3m is to blame and a bug report should be filed with its creator.
