Using fmt= with External Method

I have not seen any documentation on this, so I'm definitely fumbling in the dark here. Please bear with me. I'm curious if it's possible to use the fmt= syntax with external methods. Basically, let's assume I have this piece of DTML:  If I add an External Method called HeadingFormat, that method should be called to format Heading, right? Well, this works partially, except that HeadingFormat() cannot take any parameters. Any reason for this? How, then, can I access the data to format? Looking at the code in DT_Var.py: if hasattr(val, fmt): print "calling %s" % fmt #!! val = getattr(val,fmt)() elif special_formats.has_key(fmt): val = special_formats[fmt](val, name, md) elif fmt=='': val='' else: val = fmt % val Shouldn't the line val = getattr(val,fmt)() say something like val = getattr(val,fmt)(val) instead? (Implementing the above patch seems to work, but is likely to break lots of things?) Did I miss something? Evan, Thanks for the EXCELLENT post to the ZOPE Admin list (Digest Vol.1-#291-Message #1). I hope you, Evan, do not mind, but I 'reprinted' this post here: http://sohodojo.com/forums/Forum14/HTML/000001.html My primary interest in ZOPE is for the building of role-based executable business model frameworks (the technical side of our interest in 'ruthlessly small business' where the 'few heads, many hats' time management dilemma rules). You can find out more about 'ZOPE, Mirror Worlds and Executable Models' at: http://sohodojo.com/scripts/Ultimate.cgi In addition to the challenges of constructing these frameworks (I am an ex-Smalltalker who refuses to 'do Java'!), I am wrestling with the 'static/dynamic' problem as well, primarily for reasons having to do with search engine crawling, etc. I don't care what others' say. Of the search engines that count, my experience on our five sites is that there are plenty of situations where you had better have '.htm' or 'html' static pages, not even includes, if you want them indexed. (Getting hit doesn't automatically mean getting indexed, especially if the hit file is not parseable under the crawler's assumptions about HTML tagging.) So anyone with a commercial site (and not too big of an advertising budget!) that doesn't intend to use a combination of static and dynamic content is asking to become "The Invisible Site." I know, I saw it happen dramatically at one of our 'nano-subsidiaries', The Pop Culture Store. Months back, I thought I was so clever doing some nice Perl-based inventory management and item viewers. Within weeks the site did a 'disappearing act' and sales went with it.... the static item pages were an unappreciated good thing! (And, hey, no wisecracks about it being Perl!) Chris Petrilli here is working on a hashing out RDBMS details in preparation for the upcoming Zope 2.0 release. The result will be a report on the State-of-the-Database-Adapters. Specifically, he will identify ways in which various RDBMSes will be supported under Zope2. Of course, the introduction of concurrency in Zope 2 is having an impact on DAs. Chris' efforts will also result in a formal-ish announcement on the status of Gadfly. --Rob

We have had customers, for example, that _hate_ the _html naming convention and wanted badly to use .htm, .html etc. names. There are also concessions made in the name of supporting things like FTP and WebDAV - in these cases, Zope really needs to be willing to accept names that occur in real world file names (~files, etc.). So, the short answer is that when working with Zope objects from an external method, you should always use getattr() or Zope-provided API methods like objectValues. 'eval' constructs should be avoided. You say above that you tried getattr() - can you tell me how this failed (the traceback)? Can't configure configuration

Hi, Hi, I am playing around with some of the examples in the Zope managers guide, and I trying to create a configuration interface according to the Managers Guide. The docs do not say how to call the documents or where the are supposed to be saved at (ie what folder), but ...... Yep, your right, the catalog (like ZTables) takes only the intersection of a search. Modifying the _indexedSearch() algorithm wouldn't be too hard, it's just *how* to modify it is the tricky part. The ideal solution would be to create some sort of query language that web form could dynamicly build queries to, that way, you can design your querty rather smartly. A nifty wizard could even be built to build complex web forms that you can then tweak for usability. ANN: Squishdot 0.1.5 released

Hi ya all, After some delay, I've released a new version of Squishdot which mainly fixes a weird behavior of Squishdot regarding adding/deleting subject topics under ZODB3. Its now available both thru the Squishdot website (members.tripod.com/squishdot/index.html) or at the Zope contributed products page (www.zope.org/Download/Contrib) This is a maintenance release and includes no new functionality. Also a important note about the change: it changes the data structure of Squishdot stored data (not just the methods) so your Squishdot data may not be compatible across versions 0.1.4 and 0.1.5. I havent tested their compatibility. So it comes with this warning : <WARNING> YMMV </WARNING> ;). You can get more details about the changes and related stuff at the Squishdot site's newsnotes page (members.tripod.com/squishdot/newsnotes.html) If you still encounter problems with this release, keep sending your bug reports to squishdot(a)yahoo.com where though it may take some time, they will eventually be given due attention. Please remember to prefix bug reports with [BUG REPORT] in the subject line so they will automatically be filtered to the trash, er, bug-report folder ;). Also, I'd like to announce that preparation for the next major releases of Squishdot (i.e. 0.3 and 0.5) is going to start within the next week or so. I'm preparing a document discussing additional functionality and features that may be implemented for Squishdot -- this, I hope, will provide a starting point for a focused discussion on the directions that Squishdot will undertake in its development.
