A way that I solve a similar problem in my ZPublisher-based application engine, is for container-ish things to have a "ClassMaps" attribute (which is a cumulative multimapping of its parents' ClassMaps, plus its local mapping) that maps file name fragments to class information. When I need to know the type of a file, I look up: * The entire filename plus '/' if it's a directory (or a MKCOL/MKDIR type operation) * The filename as is * The longest possible file extension (e.g. ".tar.gz" before ".gz"), with a trailing /, if applicable and then without. * Successively shorter file extensions, with and without the / Proceeding until a match is found. This approach lets me do things like make an entry for "CVS/" so that CVS directories are automatically assigned an appropriate class, and I can distinguish between a name or extension used for a file vs. the same used for a directory. Of course, I'm using this to access an actual filesystem rather than to handle FTP/WebDAV. And in Zope this would be further complicated by the need to manage content types. Last, and worst (from my POV anyway), is that Zope has no way to drop off the extensions so that URL's can remain polymorphic (i.e., an object's name has nothing to do with its type/implementation). In my file-driven engine, object id's do not include the file extension but are resolved polymorphically. If foo.html becomes foo.dtml, the URL is still 'foo' and no part of the system really cares except that object's implementation. Of course, Zope could use the multimapping approach in the opposite way from how I do it, and instead ADD the filename extensions when operating in FTP/WebDAV mode. So 'foo.sql' in that mode is really 'foo' in regular Zope. But I'm probably just muddying the water further at this point, so I'll shut up now. :)

It might not satisfy all of your wishes, but... You could use the CookieCutter to do this if you're fine with storing pickled information in cookies. Basically, it pickles a dictionary of objects into a cookie and provides an easy-to-use interface for settings and programming. My application involves some complex queries and saves the user's search selections on the client so they don't have to enter them with each session. I quickly ran into the cookie number limit and needed a way to consolidate the information into a single cookie. I didn't want to go all the way building a database to store the data. You can download it from the Zope contributed products page. BTW, there is also a version of the CookieCutter with MD5 checksums for security added by Mark Hays. I got really busy and never updated the version on the Zope Contrib page. I owe Mark an apology for that. Sorry! If it's ok with the DC guys, should I post it separately? I don't know how this is usually done. Instance methods overiding Class method

Hello, I wonder if the following is the intended behavior or it is to be fixed: I create MyClass which inherits from Folder. I create MyFolder, instance of MyClass, and I create a MyMethod DTML Method in it. *Then* I create a DTML Method named MyMethod in MyClass. Newly created MyClass instance won't let me create methods named MyMethod in them (object already exists). However, http://mysite/MyFolder/MyMethod displays the content of the first method (instead of the MyClass method). And now the funny part: if I delete MyFolder.MyMethod, it is not possible to "Undo" the deletion: the transaction is not is the list anymore, but MyMethod doesn't get recreated in MyFolder. If I understand correctly, you are looking for a way to chop some fixed string '/path/path' off the front of the PATH_INFO for every request. I would guess that doing this in ZServer rather than in ZPublisher might be a better idea.
