To people out there, I started using Zope recently and has been trying to access MySQL from Zope on win32 platform. I have been trying to compile MySQL module for Zope and get MySQL database adapter working on win32. But I am struggling with compiling source of MySQL DA on win32 and couldn't get it working. I have heard that somebody got MySQL DA working with the binary version of DA (I couldn't find a binary version of DA on zope's home, though). Please help me if anyone knows a better way to do this. I apreciate it very much. Thanks in advance. Alan

ZOPE, Medusa and the ZD WebBench 3.0 test suite...

The June 8th issue of PC Magazine has an extensive cover story, "How to Create a Great Site," which includes a number of sub-articles, Design It, Polish It, Build It and Serve It. This cover story is pitched to small businesses considering going on-line. In this regard, there are a number of oversights and mismatches in terms of the products and services they have included or excluded in these subsection round-ups. For example, they give Editors' Choice awards to FrontPage 2000 and Dreamweaver 2 in the Design It section in a shoot-out which does not include Allaire's Homesite. And their Polish It section, for site management and promotion, did not include FirstPlace Software's excellent WebPosition Gold. (Ok, my personal preferences are showing, but I include them here to give you an idea of how unusually sloppy and rushed much of this massive feature seems to me. I usually count on ZD Labs to give me credible "Consumers' Digest" type pre-purchase information.) The Build It section ratchets up a level from static WYSIWYG authoring, covered in the Design It section, to products which provide back-end database connectivity and other commerce-oriented features. In a sidebar, application servers are covered, stating that "Cons" for their use is the requirement to learn Java or C++ and that such environments have generally higher software costs!? Obviously the editorial team is unaware of ZOPE. (I plan to write a "Dear Editors" letter to bring this and other oversights of the full article to their attention, but suggest that there is "strength in numbers" so anyone else inclined to do the same, I encourage you to chime in.) But most disturbing are the results published for the OS and Server tests in the Serve It section. As you will see if you check this out, NT and IIS shine, especially with regard to dynamic page serving and SSL performance. Linux/Apache have a poor showing. In the fine print, the editors do reveal that, due to a bug in the TCP/IP stack, the ZD Labs were unable to run the test suite against the latest 2.2 kernel!? I certainly hope they do a "2nd Look" update of this shoot-out and provide such updated performance information. But here's the real intent of this note... ZD Labs reports that this shoot-out marks the debut of WebBench 3.0. This test suite is designed to stress test web servers. They give full details of the network config, etc. on pages 170-172. My question, and the one I expect is on many of your minds, is... How does a ZOPE/Medusa server config stack up? My hope and expectation that the underlying Medusa architecture might really shine when compared to the pre-allocating multi-process approach of Apache, etc. Does anybody in the ZOPE community have the resources to run the WebBench test suite? Does anybody have the contacts and/or clout to supply ZD Labs an appropriately configured ZOPE/Medusa server to perform such a test? And finally, are we at the point where such a test would be in our best interest, or do we bide our time and "leap from the bushes" when our planets are slightly more aligned (as in following the 2.0 roll-out)? Palm & Zope.

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone out there has done any work related to publishing documents written on a PalmPilot via Zope. The obvious route is to author structured text on the Pilot (memopad or a Doc file editor, preferably Doc to avoid the 4K limit of memopad) and upload that manually. I have two problems with that kind of setup: The first is the manual publishing of documents. Ideally, though the documents would be sent to the Zope server on Hot Synch. What folder they were published in could be dictated by the category of the document. My second problem is with structured text itself- with the lack of horisontal space the need to indent paragraphs to get headings is a pain. I'd prefer something similar to Emacs' outline mode which uses consecutive *'s at the beginning of a line to show it is a heading and what level it is. (Of course, writing the HTML tags on the Palm is an option, but that does beome very tedious.) So my questions are: 1) Has anyone written code to read Doc files and upload them to Zope. This shouldn't be very hard but I wouldn't want to duplicate existing effort. 2) How hard would it be to extend/modify the structured text module to do what I want? (I've been lurking long enough to hear about Z-Classes but I haven't learned enough to know whether that applies here.) Thanks in advance. If someone breaks into your Zope, all they can do is munge up some objects and maybe restart, but you can allways go in and roll-back the database to fix their damage. There is no way for a user to execute arbitrary code as the UID of the Zope process. FTP support works like a charm here, the only thing I would like it to do is traverse into ZClasses, and I'll be implimenting that sometime after the 2.0 final release. WebDAV is as complete as the RFC is, and works quite well with SiteCopy and with what parts of the spec MSIE 5.0 impliments, never used Netscape PUT but once and it worked then, but it's possible there are problems, I'd venture to guess they were netscape problems because I had a hell of a time getting Netscape publishing to work with Roxen about a year ago. Since Netscape publishing has left a bad taste in my mouth. The ZODB is fully transactional. This means that multiple object stores can be called a 'transaction' and if one doesn't happen, then none of them do, or if one is undone, they are all undone. Essentialy transactionality allows you to take a group of operations and make them one atomic operation. Many higher end relational databases support the notion of transactions on records, Zope supports the notion of transations on objects. Transactions are most obviously a benefit for staged development, and they are the mechanism behind versions, which allow you to work on a personal 'copy' of the database and only commit the changes you've made when you are sure the whole thing is working, thus 'commiting' the transaction. This might give you a revealing clue. Getting Zope to work with apache can be tricky, different versions of mod_rewrite either want or don't want a trailing slash after Zope but before the regexp, Directory attributes like ExecCGI must be specified etc. Apache is a very good, big multi-knobbed beast. Another option is to check out Zap, the precompiled and configured Zope+Apache for Linux.
