Goodmorning all, Yesterday evening I had a course of ASP. I saw some small demo's to give a quick impression of what you can do with ASP. I guess this should also be a great idea for Zope. I'm going to give it a try, but maybe somebody can help me to go in the correct direction. First, these q'n : Can ASP be used with Zope. i.e. I suppose Zope can work together with IIS? They said that CGI gives to much problems (for every connection a new one is started etc) I guess that's why Zope uses a Persistant CGI (if not using ZServer or HTTPServer)? Or Is directly working with HTTPServer so that the connection keeps on, during the logon of a user? What I find of ASP is that it is quiet easy to understand to get started with some objects. But thats perhaps my background is Microsoft. But, is it needed? Let's give it a try. See how these things can be done with Zope : Demo 1: A page displays the time & date and shows a sentence from fontheight 1 to 7. The printing of the sentence is done iterative : I believe <% for iFontSize= 1 to 7 .... %> Demo 2: A form askes the name and age, + humour (checkbox). The form checks the entered values and complaints if something is wrong : Checks if age is a number. Then checks age is > 0 and <120 If wrong data is entered, the previous values are still available in the form. i.e. The user only has to change the wrong value and doesn't has to reënter the complete form. Demo 3: users are added into a database. Then users can click on urls, so that only the humoures are shown/ the non-humoures and all persons are shown. (Everything is written in one .asp file) Demo 4: Security. Done with a session object. A name is asked. When the name is in the database a picture is shown. When the name isn't in the database. The person isn't allowed to view the picture. If somebody has some scripts available of the above. Please let me know (and if I can use them). Thanks, Tom.

DTML semantics changed 1.9 -> 1.10?

Noticed the following change in Zope's behavior. Imagine the following: Folder, id 'test' TinyTable, id 'data: columns 'name', 'pos' a single row of data, for simplicity: "one", "first" DTML Document or Method, id "show" If show contains:      Then Zope 1.10.2 is unable to find data's __call__. 1.9.0 worked fine. The following variations, which should be equivalent in this case, all work. Omitting the if works:    Omitting the query and just using the whole dat TinyTable works:      Forcing acquisition of data works:      It's as though within an #if, the name data is getting bound to some other object (probably the results of data(), since it can be iterated in the second working example above). Is this change in behavior intentional?

security model with regards to aquisition

I have a folder that has restricted access. In a parent folder I have a DTML method that accesses a property of the folder. A browser that has not been autheticated for viewing the folder can still view use the aquired method in the folder, ie they type http://server.com/RestrictedFolder/parentMethod and it works!!! This seems counter intuitive to me. Either you have access to a folder or you do not. Why is this the case and should it be? In any case how do I make sure users can not do the above unless authenticated?

If it were _me_, I'd do the following, to avoid having to hack the distributed Zope code (which will be a pain when you later want to upgrade to a new version): 1) In your _top_ level Folder, define a property called base_url, with a value that reflects your alias to the top level zope folder. 2) In places where you need hyperlinks, instead of using BASE0, use a construct like: <a href="/foo/bar/etc">a link</a> This way, you dont have to hack the code, the links should look right and if your base_url changes, you only need to change one property to fix the entire site. The drawback, of course, is that you won't be able to use relative urls in your hrefs (because the browser would prepend the contents of the base tag), but this is usually not a big problem in practice. ZServer ftp problem, when not running as root

Hello zopies, It seems that if zope/zserver is not running as root, the ftp functionality is not working. This means, that uploaded files all have length 0 or 144 bytes, depending on the version of zope. This also appears in the current (4/28) public cvs code. Is there a permission problem and has anyone discovered a similiar drawback? TIA Christian

sending email from a standard_error_message.

I'd look at doing this myself, but I seem to remember someone else already posted saying they'd done this: I'd like a standard_error_message that sends email to an administrative mailbox, with a traceback, REQUEST contents, and the like. Has anyone tackled this? Alternatively, how about simply storing the data in the zobobase? Anthony

Properties of documents

hello, yes me again, is there a way that every DTML document in a specified folder will always have a certain set of properties instead of just the 'title' which comes as default?? is there somewhere to set this up without having to set the property everytime a new document is created?? any help would be appreciated.. Z-ODB or SQL?

Does there exist a demo application which shows how one would use Z-ODB for creating, sorting and searching through a collection of objects? I have read the technical docs for Z-ODB, but there is still a big gap in my understanding between that and what I'm seeing in the rest of the Zope docs (Manager's guide, FAQs, HowToos, etc). Question: Is it true one could create a collection of python objects which would get stored in Z-ODB, and those objects would define __cmp__ and other functions for the object and it's composed parts, then you can do some rudimentary sorting and searching on the collection via normal python code -- Is that the general idea? Or is there more of a collections framework than what exists in the classes DB, Connection, Persistent, Transaction? I am so used to working with SQL, that I could use a good example or demo to break me out of thinking in terms of rows/tables. I would like *not* to use SQL, but at this point it seems like a much more rapid solution for my project. Any suggestions, or pointers to a Zope product that illustrates the advantages of using Z-ODB over Zope w/ SQL? changing variables

something i have found with Zope is that doing complex stuff is always fairly easy (?) but trying to do easy stuff that any programming language can do without even thinking seems to be very hard... Perhaps someone can help me with this one.... I have a press lounge with a number of press releases in it. Each of these press documents has a property called 'publishDate' which is in the date format. I am trying to use ZopeTime (which displays the time and date) to check this publishDate property and if the two match print out the content if not, do not. Basically, i need to be able to assign ZopeTime to a variable and strip off the time part. You can do this if you print it to the screen with:  but how do i assign this to somekind of variable?? Please help as my hair is beginning to go grey and my teeth are beginning to fall out..... ANNOUNCE: TinyTables Beta 2

I've uploaded a new beta of TinyTables to the Contrib section of zope.org. The main change in this version is a brand new interface for editing the data. The pick-your-delimiter fields are now replaced with a more flexible CSV-like syntax. The old system had several problems: first, it would have caused problems later on with a read-write tinytables. If your delimiter is ':' and someone cases an "add row" method to be invoked with a column containing a ':', you've got problems. Next time you edit the data through the management interface, you'll most likely mess up that row by accident when the ':' in the data is taken as a delmiter. Another problem was that people tended to do things like set the delimiter to ',' and enter a row like 'hello, there, world'. Either the second and later fields get an extra trailing space, or TinyTables has to strip columns of leading and trailing whitespace, meaning you can't have any if you really want it. With the new system, no problem. Strings can now include any characters, including newlines and nulls. See the TinyTable section in the Zope Help Interface for more information on the new input format. Other changes: - Columns can now be NULL (missing). Just as with SQL, sometimes it's important to distinguish between empty value and no value, or even more importantly for numeric fields, betweem 0 and no value. - "date" column type renamed to "datetime". New "date" type added that forces DateTime values to be date-only. (essentially does x = DateTime(x.Date()) - version.txt and README.txt added Note: I uploaded a version of this to the zope site last night. If you haoppened to be poking around and found it before this announcement, you might have downloaded a buggy version. Please make sure the version you get is 0-8-2. (Of course, 0-8-2 may also be buggy, but at least I don't *know* of any bugs :^)
