Defining my own security
by Steve Jibson 29 Apr '04

29 Apr '04

Okay, here goes... I have created a Zope Product that extends a Zope Folder object and I want to add a non-traditional security check before allowing users to "View" stuff in the "folder". For reasons that are too complicated to explain here, I can't use Zope roles and permissions for this check (in fact, this check should be done in addition to Zope's existing security mechanism checks). What I want to do is verify that a particular variable in the "Session" matches a specific property of the "folder". If it does not match, I want to raise an unauthorized error. Is this kind of thing possible? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Where is the magic that makes ZopeHome/Products show up on the path?
by Mike C. Fletcher 29 Apr '04

I had thought that this was done with __path__ statements in the __init__.py module, but I don't see any __path__ statement in Products/__init__.py in my Zope 2.7 install. PyDoc doesn't pick up the existence of the extended search path and I was thinking I'd try to teach it how to do so. Though I suppose it might be easier to just fix ZPydoc to work with Zope 2.7, now that I think about it. Have fun, Mike _______________________________________ Mike C. front middle and back
by aamehl 29 Apr '04

Hi all, I am designing an application that will manage content: audio, notation and text. The frontend take the user input. The backend is the db and directory structure. The middle end relays to and from backend to frontend. I am having trouble visualizing where existing zope products will help me and where I need to create python scripts to interact with the front end and backend. For example I want to check the database for existing information and send a page back to the frontend (plone). I haven't installed any products yet related to databases but is the product the place to query the database from or should I write a python module/script to do that for me. In other words what does the Zope product do for me? I don't mean to sound stupid but I am most confused by this and would prefer not to reinvent the wheel if at all possible. The above in just one scenero. For audio I need to upload a file to a remote directory and scan the headers and then user the header info to update the database. Again a Zope product or a python script/module?? Thanks Aaron

Request for Information
by Shashin Shah 29 Apr '04

Dear Zope Users Apologies if this is not the right forum to raise these questions. I am helping a charity decide on an Open Source / Open Standards CMS and also a framework and supporting tools to help them develop their web based applications faster. I would very much appreciate your views on the following: - What is your view on Python versus Java. I am hearing that Python may be more productive than Java in building web based apps. - Whilst Zope is open source, to what extent is it based on Open standards, If we select Zope/Plone/Python is there a danger of getting locked in to something that is proprietary. - Are you aware of any comparisons done on Zope CMF/Plone versus other CMSs (such as Open CMS) that we could have access to ? Any help most appreciated. -- Shashin Shah
