Hi! I have read the DTML docs and I couldn't find the pros and cons of each. Why diferent syntax for the same? I mean,  makes it usable for HTML editor like HoTMetaL since it's a "comment" tag :-) Is there any "underwater" difference between the two syntax that I didn't saw? TIA /B Bruno

DTML var and performance

Hi, I would like to translate some products (like Squishdot) in other langages (french, spanish...). I planned to replace all the hard coded texte in DTML methods and documents by reference to properties or attributes of some objects. The question is: Will I lost in term of perfomance if replace each word or phrase in all the dtml methods or documents by a dtml var tag? Same question if I use a lot of cascading style sheets in order to make the products even more customizable. authentication via userdb or user folder

hi, situation: i'm trying to set up a site with two distinct users - anonymous and member - just like the zope org. problem: with user db - it can only be one level off root dir (e.g. Register). authentication is ok. the only thing is i get AUTHENTICATED_USER as anonymous user on other folders except the user db folder. i guess i need to acquire to the root dir. how could i approach that? removing the default user folder at root and moving the user db to root didnt help much. it locks off users. with user folder - i can't figure out how to authenticate thru a form. what do i need to compare? if only i can have a peek at what happen when i log in at the zope site.. i did look at logged_in.html - but can't see where the authentication takes place. what to call, etc. sorry if this is too simple. i searched thru the archive, but no relevant answers to my Q. i did came accross Michel's point about membership. is it available now? tia

SMTP Success, sort of . . .

Hi Zope fans, For those of you equally stymied by a mailhost object that refuses to work, I finally got that picky little fellow functioning. There were two potential problems, both of which existed in my example. Remember the error message was: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: SMTP Error Error Value: Received error code 503 from SMTP: 503 Need RCPT (recipient) First, there can be no spaces before the "To:" in the recipient line. This most likely applies to other lines, such as From:, but I'm way too toasted to spend any more time on it. Of course, since I copied and pasted my template code directly from the Zope Documentation into my DTML method, I "knew" that it had to be "correct". What I didn't know was that the spaces that I copied were added for cosmetic effect in the context of an on-line document. Live and learn. Second, the mailhost line in the dtml "action" method must be followed immediately by the recipient information. An extra line feed will also cause smtp to fail. I honestly have no clue when or how that extra line feed crept in , but I can tell you with certainty that I was trying everything I could think of to get this sucker working, including lot's of stuff that made no sense whatever, and in an infinite range of combinations. Sadly, my instincts were correct. It was something totally dumb that was so "obvious" that it never occurred to the cognoscenti to mention it. These are the kinds of things that make anyone who knows smtp to say, "duh!", and anyone who is trying to duplicate text examples of a "working" system from "documentation" to wonder, "Why couldn't they just say that!". Having claimed success, it is in fact conditional. I have received mail sent from inside our firewall, out to an InterNet smtp host, which in turn was forwarded (back) to my internal E-Mail. However, mail from inside to inside seems to vanish. So, in fact it still doesn't really work, for our purposes. It would have been nice if I had stumbled upon this about 1000 iterations ago, and a month or two back, but the damage to Zope's reputation around here has already been done. Help! - Zope import

Hi *, I'm am trying to Import a Zope1 Export into Zope2. I get an "ExportError" msg when trying to do this. Is there any way to get around this? Thanks in advance, - Fox

Paul, Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, there are some very interesting things with ColdFusion that people really need to know. These are things, such as the Win32 emulation under Solaris, that might affect peoples decision. I report, you decide. Anyway, as for Spectra, I'm under an NDA, but I can discuss the major parts of it that are public. First of all, as I said before, they have attempted to make an object publishing environment out of a non-object oriented programming language/application server. To answer your question, I do think that Spectra is limited by having CF as a foundation. I think that Spectra is *going to be* slow and clunky given it's CF architecture... try taking a procedural language and trying to write an application like you would in an object oriented language... it's simply going to be a bunch of work-arounds and quick fixes... it's not going to be clean code, it's not going to be elegant... it *might* work, but it will be clunky and slow... see what I mean? The one thing I must give Allaire credit for is the way that they have marketed Spectra... What they have done is taken a clunky, slow, hard to use product and marketed the hell out of it. The one thing missing from Zope is that kind of hardcore marketing. Zope can do everything Spectra will do, and it can do it NOW. And it can do it faster and better and is easier to use, is more extensible, etc. But, like I have seen from other posts on this list, at least Allaire tells you what you can do with Spectra. And, no offense to ColdFusion developers, but the majority of them are not that technically skilled so telling them what they can do and how easy it will be to implement is *just* what they want to hear. What's funny, is the exact same things would be much easier to implement in Zope. Hope that I answered your questions in a round about way. I like ColdFusion, but you have to take if for what it is...a procedural development environment... if you want to work with objects (and enjoy the benefits of doing so) then Zope is the obvious choice.
