Hi, Today decided to download and install Zope 1.10.2 on my Dec Station 5000/240. I am new to Zope and have no experience but I have some experience with python. I hope there is someone else who already tried to install zope on Ultrix? First I installed the new python1.5.2 - I hope Zope works with this new python release? As I am planning to use Zope with apache-1.3.4, I executed the script "w_pcgi.py". After some compiling, the process reported errors: My system (ULTRIX 4.3A) does not support shared modules, so I edited all "Setup" Files in "lib/python", commented the line "*shared*" and did a "make python". Then I had a new python binary that I installed over the old. Was this the right thing to do or is there a better way? I found no description of how to build Zope statically. Ok, now I copied the "Zope.cgi" file into my /cgi-bin/ Directory and started it -> I received the Error: "Service temporarily unavailable". Ok, the reason for it was that the "var" directory had wrong permissions, I did a "chmod ugo+rwx var" and a "chmod ugo+rw var/*" - but is this not quite dangerous for my system security? Anyway, after that I received another error: "Sorry, a SERIOUS APPLICATION ERROR occurred." I had a short look into the logfile but it gave me no clue, so I gave up for now. I hope you have some clue? Go to the root folder. Go to the export tab, leave the blank empty, and press export. It will create a file '.bbe' containing everything in your database. YMMV. Howard C. publishing objects

hi folks, i've got some beginner questions about zope. i spent a fair amount of time with various documentation, but couldn't find the answers. first, the specific question. the docs talk about publishing objects, with zope translating URLs to method calls. i get the impression that i can call arbitrary Python objects through zope, but i can't get it to work. i've tried it with IIS and the included HTTP server. let's say i want to call somemethod() in test.py. the docs say that http://localhost:9673/test/somemethod will do it. but where should test.py live? what's the home document directory of the builtin HTTP server? and if i use IIS, how do i get it to use zope. by calling http://localhost:9673/manage, i can access the zope ODB, but not python modules outside the database. is this possible? using IIS, i could access ODB objects via http://localhost/zope/cgi/zope.exe/manage, but again, how do i get to the python objects? do the modules have to exist in the zope ODB? if so, how do i import them? i know about external methods, but it seems cumbersome to create them, method by method, object by object. what i want to do is create a web application for reading and writing information from a database (a registry of trainers and trainings). i have begun developing this using ASP, IIS, and SQL Server. i'm always looking for non-microsoft alternatives. it looks like i can develop business objects in python that model the business rules, then use zope to access the objects and control the presentation. in another language, those business objects would encapsulate the database access. i know zope has database adapters, but if i don't already have data in a relational database, do i even need to use one. could the application be implemented solely with the object database? i'm used to relational databases, so when i start with new projects i start with the database. but maybe the zope ODB provides what i need... any ideas? thanks in advance for your time. -scott ----- Scott Lewis Baltic Avenue Productions csl(a)balticave.com

Funny problem with DTML, please help!

Hi guys, I hope someone can help me with this one, because it's almost driving me crazy :-) The following code fails with an error for count_yes:  Calculate the vote percentage                Now display the results  <h2> Total :  votes</h2> <ul> <li>Yes :  votes (%)</li> <li>No :  votes (%)</li> </ul> When I change  to  it works as expected, no errors, but that's not what I want :-( I've tried, superstitiously, to change count_yes to several other things, but no luck. It always gives me an error for the vairable I substitute for count_yes. The strangest thing is that the same code works for count_no and count_all ?!? Any ideas?

I don't know how to refer to the id of the root of my Zope tree. The management tree interface doesn't give it a name (the folder in the top-left corner is unlabeled). I'd like to export my entire tree into a .bbe file, but I don't know how to refer to the root object. --david

This same query works perfectly under myadmin2.0 against the same database. Any ideas why it fails here? I thought it might be because 'valid' was a reserved word, but I seriously doubt that 'vald' is. I don't know if this is a feature/function of the Database Adapter or the underlying Python database connection code. The MS Access lash-up returns This query returned no data. Bug in Z ODBC DA?

Hi there, My voyage through bug land seems to continue: I've been using the Z ODBC database adaptor to speak SQL to an Access database on the NT server that Zope is running on here. This all works fine for SELECT and INSERT statements. Now I've gotten to DELETE statements, however. I'm trying to delete a record from a table called 'entiteit' (entity). Each record in that table has a unique 'entiteit_id'. Records in the table 'entiteit' can be pointed to by records in the table 'bestelling' (orders), by referring to this 'entiteit_id'. I've established a referential integrity relationship in Access between the two tables, to ensure that records in 'entiteit' can't be removed if their entiteit_id is still in use by records in the 'bestelling' table. Whenever I try to DELETE a record (by entiteit_id) in the entiteit table, I get an ODBC error message in the Zope traceback, saying basically (I think) that this violates referential integrity. This is odd, as I'm trying to delete records that *aren't* referred to from anywhere (the only table that *can* refer to entiteit is bestelling anyway). It gives this error message for any table. (traceback at the end) In order to try to rule out it was an ODBC problem in itself, or a fault of mine in making this Access table, I've created a small Python script that uses the Python DB API to talk to ODBC. This script can delete records just fine, unless they're referred to from the bestelling table. ODBC therefore seems to be okay. Unless someone can give a reasonable explanation of why this happens, this points to a bug in the Zope ODBC database adaptor. Anybody have similar experiences?
