A better solution to your problem is to replace the DateTime.py file at 664 with the following. I havn't tested it thoughly but it works for me. I remember getting a similar error awhile back on a CVS version of Zope. The reason was that I forgot to set the DNS_IP in z2.py. SEMI-ANNOUNCE: Zpdf v0.1 a PDF dynamic document generator

Hello Zopistas - I have uploaded on my starship account http://starship.python.net/crew/pavlos/ the first stable version of a simple PDF document formatter. It comes with a minimal HTML to PDF converter that supports enough HTML to convert most StructuredText documents. (See Acquisition.pdf in the doc directory). Unfortunately it is too slow to become the basis of a Zope product but it was designed with that goal in mind. If the ZDP folk use well structured html (or just StructuredText) to write the ZDP documents and FAQs we will easily have a relatively good quality documentation ready with not too much effort. Included in the distribution is a patched version of StructuredText.py, which fixes some minor bugs. Pavlos

What your getting at here is true. The storage format is only a small part of the problem. As it turned out in this case it wasn't the format but sematics of the data that was at fault. Having a relational or XML version would not have made a differece. My bad feeling really comes from combining code and data idea. The ZODB is really acting as a repository for code, documents that make up static content of the site and database type information unless you choose to put that in a relation DB. It makes me uneasy to put code and data in the same place. It seems to me that this is what Zope is all about though. What would mitigate the risk is to have a proper encapsulation. External methods are essential however python is not an encapsulated language in the same way something like java is. Encapsulation would prevent bugs interferring with anymore than with what they are supposed to interact with? Is this possible with python? External methods writting "up" object hierarchy

I am trying to write an External method that evaluates a multiple- choice exam, and then writes the results into a directory object for the student within the Zope database. I cannot seem to figure out how to access objects that are Parents of the object from which the External method is called. Is this possible? And can this be done on another "branch" of the object heirarchy? For example, if A, and B are subobjects of X, can an External method called in A access B and its sub-objects - and how? Well, as I understand it, the idea of harvest was to provide standard interfaces to any kind of data. Each site had brokers that did local indexing and exposed an interface to other search engines. This allowed general search engines to index very specific kind of data. Harvest WAS academic stuff and I'm not sure what happened to it.
