There is also the unixODBC project, which has vowed to bring ODBC freely to Unix and in particular Linux. MySQL and PostgreSQL drivers are available. ANNOUNCING: MySQLdb-0.0.3 now available

MySQLdb-0.0.3 has just been released. You'll find it at: http://starship.python.net/crew/adustman I ran this sucker for about three hours (140 CPU minutes) with two simultanous threads with no leakage evident. However, there's an outside chance it may leak with more threads (like 10 or so). For you Zope smokers, there is a patch to ZMySQLDA to make it work with MySQLdb instead of MySQLmodule-1.4. Does it work? Maybe yes, maybe no; read the patch and don't complain to me if you go up or down an octave. Keep in mind, it won't work at all without at least MySQL-3.22.19, and MySQLmodule-1.4 uses 3.21.x AFAIK. 3.22.25 seems okay, except some weirdness with TIME columns (not my fault). And you need Python 1.5.2, but you need that for Zope 2.0.0 anyway, so get it. If you're actually using this module for something, I'd like to hear about it. Here is the FAQ: Q: Why do I have problems importing (missing symbols)? A: Either you don't have Python 1.5.2 (missing PyLong_FromLongLong) or you are linking against a shared output version of the MySQL client library and it's not on your LD_LIBRARY_PATH. ZHttpServer and NT service using pythons

I have an external method that works just fine with ZHttpServer. When I switched to using apache and the Zope.exe cgi I have problems. os.ListDir is not working the same. I presume that somehow the python path or environment is different. Can anyone help me with this problem?

At this point in the game, it's all just wild speculation, and no one is going to compare an open source product with a commercial one, the recent Linux/Microsoft debacle proves that a moot point; at some point the marketing people step in and it's a war of words, and truly, words have no power. Comparing two open source applications is fairly reasonable (like Enhydra) but I don't think anyone has made such a comparison, and I doubt we'll see a fair one any time soon that would sway any professional, that's one of the things about open source, if you believe the marketing hype, you might as well let youself be suckered into buying the commercial products anyway. They'll apreciate your money and actually save you the time of learning the differences yourself. I don't mean this to sound to sharp edged, but that is what I beleive about open source software, if you *know* it's better, because you've learned and seen with your own eyes, marketing hype soon becomes background noise, and you can truly see what an application really is. -Michel

FTP access

Hi I'm new to zope and have been reading through the docs. They make reference to the fact that you can have FTP access and hence don't need to work from a browser front end. Does this mean that you can use say 'vi' to write your DTML and then FTP it to the server? What is the best way to configure such a setup? ZServer fails to return all Images for a page.

Hello, I'm using zope 2 with ZServer from cvs on a win98 box to develop a concept site. I'm storing close to a thousand images in a single folder and I have several dtml-methods defined that break the images up into various groups (the images are all 48x48 png's approx. 6k each). My problem is that when I'm initially loading the main page I get allot of dropped Images :o( The page contains some long running JavaScript and approx. 300 images in a single DIV. It isn't very consistent on which images are dropped except that they are usually toward the bottom of the page. Just wondering if any one else as encountered similar problems... "Installed" products are products that are written purely in Python - they are either included with Zope or are packaged as a tgz file that installs a package into lib/python/Products. "Through the web" products are built throught the web and are stored in the Zope database. To move an "installed" product from site to site, you just copy the product distribution (.tgz file ) to the new site and unpack it. Because "installed" products have no state stored in the Zope ODB, they do not have a distribution tab. "Through the web" products allow you to create a product distribution (tgz file) that, once installed, brings the persistent state of the product into the ODB at restart when you install it on a different site. The "distribution" tab basically creates an installable snapshot of your through-the-web product. Hope this helps! I have put up a commercial site using Zope and Squishdot, you can view it at http://TECHNOCRAT.NET/ . I got a report of someone not being able to see some of the article text and some of the images. I'd like you to check out the site and see if you get the same problem. Note that this site is not yet launched - please don't publicize it outside of this list yet, but feel free to contribute an article if you wish. I am using Zope 2.0.0a4 - perhaps somewhat daringly, but since I'm developing Zope components for this project, I'd rather not stay with version 1. After the problem report, I installed lib/python/ZODB/DB.py revision 1.11 . If there's anything else I should install from CVS, please tell me. Thanks Bruce Perens
