(was fun to see Ken submit an entire message parenthetically:) I have to admit that the new "experimental" syntax has helped me break some old habits and generate more expr="readable()" code. Part of it's due to the fact that now I can train Alpha to do some shortcuts (autocomplete, yay!) and prevent me from doing the less-understandable-shortcuts. And now, even outside of my cozy li'l editors and inside the harsh reality of <textarea>, I find myself entering: <dtml-if name="green_eggs">  <dtml-if name="ham">  <dtml-if expr="ham.color=='green'"> Green eggs and ham! <dtml-else> <dtml-with name="ham"> Green eggs and <dtml-var name="color"> ham. :( </dtml-with> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> Kinda purdy, ain't it? :)

Background Images

Total newbe question. How do you add a background image? I've got HTML like so: <BODY BACKGROUND="tealtile.jpg" BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000" LINK="#0000ff" LINK="#800080" ALINK="#ff0000"> I've uploaded the image(and named it tealtile) to the site. I've tried inserting a  tag in the background property but that caused lots of havoc. I've looked through the docs but nothing helpful there. I'm pretty sure that this question has been asked before but the list archives don't have a search feature.

why are DA-s in two places on zope.org ?

This question is mainly to the maintainers of www.zope.org Why are some Zope Database adapters (Sybase, Adabas) listed only in Contributed area while others, including contributed PostgreSQL DA, are under Database Adaptors ? -------- Hannu

mod_pcgi problems

I finally got mod_pcgi compiled for Apache (actually hacked RedHat's Rawhide 1.3.6 SRPM) and running, but I'm having some trouble, which seems like a bug. Here's the problem. If I request /, I get a 404. The error is: File does not exist: /home/httpd/html/pcgi/ OTOH, if I request /pcgi/, this works in that I get Zope. In effect, if mod_rewrite rewrites the URL to /pcgi/, it doesn't find the PCGI mount, but if the URL has /pcgi already, it bypasses mod_rewrite. I don't know if this is a bug, or feature, and if either, of either Apache, mod_rewrite, or mod_pcgi. What you should really worry about is why your database got corrupted in the first place (you do back up your data, right? so the loss of the file won't be that much of a loss, right?). Are you storing the Data.bbb file on a remote filesystem? One nuance that i didn't notice is additional leniency that the non-quoted ("name=", non-expr) dtml style offers. Eg, the expression  will evaluate to true if the var (or method) green_eggs exists and evaluates true. Otherwise it will evaluate to false. On the other hand,  is similar *except* that an exception will be raised if the name green_eggs is not defined. The former, non-expr version conveniently tolerates unbound names. To tolerate unbound names in an expr you have to get a lot more verbose - doing something like:  While this may seem unnecessary with the non-expr convenience, but sometimes you need to distinguish definitively between undefined and false values...) MySQL database connection

Hi All. Here's a newbie question: I've got the MySql DA installed, but can't find info on what to supply as a connection string when adding a connection. I've tried 'mysql -u grace -p <password>' and '-u grace -p <password>' but get errors on both. Does anyone know what kind of connection string it's looking for? Ryan

First, realize that quoting and not quoting are both shorthands:  is short for   is short for  Referencing something *by name* does not require quotes. In this situation, the DTML interpreter will look up the name in the namespace, and do it's thing with it. For example, if the thing your referencing is a DTML Document or Method, it will know to pass in the namespace so that that DTML object can also take part in rendering dynamic content. If that object is any kind of method, it will call it, passing in the namespace. If the object is not a method, it will take the repr() of it. There are several special objects that get added by DTML itself, especially in the context of certain tags, like the #in tag; some of these special objects being 'sequence-key' etc... Referencing an expression is different. In this situation, the string in the quotes is treated like a Python expression. If you want to call a method, you must call() it explicitly and pass in any needed parameters. referencing an object, will give you that object, and if the whole expression results in an object, #var will take the repr() of it. Because all of those special variables can be handy in expressions as well as just by name, they are pushed into the '_' namespace mapping, so in an expression, if you want to use the value of 'sequence-item' in the expression, you can say . This is because in a python expression, 'sequence-item' is literally interpreted to mean 'sequence' minus 'item', which is not what you want. Note that there are some side effects. For example, if you say:  DTML will call that method *the first time you use it* and then cache the value returned. This way, you can reference aReallyExpensiveMethod by name a bunch of times and not suffer the cost of running the same method over and over, since it is, after all, really expensive. If you don't want to cache the value (like if you are a naughty programmer and your really expensive method has an after effect that you want to incur each time) you can use it in an expression:  and DTML will not cache it.
