Forgive this nagging newbie. But I am still at a loss and my question seems an eye-opening(at least partially) one for a newbie. Well, I upgraded to 2.0.0b4, and I think I found a bug, but am not sure. So I'm posting it to the list for all to review first. I have defined index_html as so in the root folder:    This index_html file is shared throughout the website. Then I define pre_content so as to display banners and set up the tables for the rest of the page layout. The idea is that each folder has a "content" method, which contains the meat of the page, with pre_content and post_content being shared across all pages. post_content closes the HTML tags opened in pre_content, of course, and calls , which displays our company's copyright message. The copyright method, in turn, makes a reference:  Problem is, this *FAILS*. Patronizing, hardly. I wrote you that note and it was sound business advice to which you didn't even give me the courtesy of a response. If you spent half as much time actually learning something as opposed to trying to convince us how smart you are, you might be a part of this community rather than an expatriate. Businesses regularly spend money evaluating business-critical products. Many proprietary technologies, hard and soft, are not available for 'tire kicking' such as you are allowed with ZOPE and other Open Source technologies. Certainly Tera would not box up one of your supercomputers and send it to me for evaluation. Your comments either show your naiveté or your arrogance. If you worked for me and your reason for dropping your evaluation of ZOPE was that you couldn't figure it out for free, I'd fire you no matter how smart you tell me you are. Running an External Method as another user

Hi folk! I've been messing around with providing some simple network administration tools via Zope, to the people in my office. One thing I would like to do is create a page that will allow my users to change both their "normal" Linux password (used by most people in my office for mail only) and their Samba password (used by almost everybody in the office for connectivity to our server). It's quite easy to train these people how to change one or the other of the passwords, but getting them to change both at the same time has been a problem. Hence, my desire to write a Zope app that will--given their existing password, and a new password--update both the passwd file and the smbpasswd file. I didn't think very far ahead, and while I have some nice tools that use Expect to change the password, I haven't figured out how to run an External Method as someone other than nobody. Giving up in frustration

This is unusual, I realize, but I'm going to tell you why I'm giving up on Zope now. I'm doing it because I think this thing has awesome potential, but if you try to make it popular with the current documentation it will sink like a rock any time a user wants to see how to input or edit data. I'm experienced, quick-witted, hard-working, dogged and persistent. I read all the available documentation until my eyes bled. I read thousands of the letters in the email forum. I could not have made a more valid effort. I finally gave in and sent the email group a plea for help, and got several kind and generous answers that answered my questions, basic, obvious questions, the kind nobody can get anywhere without having answers to. Why could I not find those answers in all that documentation digging? The answers basically led me into another blank wall one millimeter closer to my simple evaluation than I was when I started. I have learned hundreds of systems in my career, many of them quite opaque and difficult. Last week, I learned python so I could rewrite a perl script that was choking on signals from child processes, and in a day I had a solid, actually rather beautiful, threaded python application running brilliantly for me (and a great appreciation for the language). OK, learning python is not rocket science, but this is seriously non-trivial. I have never in my life experienced a system so utterly resistant to learning the basic elements you must know in order to start, as I have with Zope. I got on the Linux bandwagon when there were maybe 50,000 of us, at release 0.99 patch level 5. It was obnoxious to find the info you wanted, but not like this. People! Write some getting-started documentation! Write an FAQ file! And for God's sake, don't write a patronizing letter about "Does Tera have money to spend?" to a person who's trying to evaluate whether something is worth spending money on... I hope you're hugely successful with Zope over time, but you'll lose a lot more like me if you don't write down the basic assumptions some place and post arrows pointing to it from everywhere. And I tell you what: If I ever have a database where I never have to put in any data, or edit any of it, I'll be back in a flash... Keeping a connection

Sybase handles this blindingly quickly. I know because IDS' e-mail portal builds an OR list like this for every word in the subject line of an e-mail to match against a table to see if it recognizes the word as a domain name we host. The table it scans holds about 200,000 domain names, and almost 1 million records total, but the queries execute in a couple seconds, tops. The field is indexed, but it only holds 24 characters and the domain names can be longer. So on any word longer than a certain number of characters, we have to do a wildcard search. (Don't ask.) Anyway, Sybase and many other databases recognize that they can use indexes to speed queries of the form "LIKE 'xxx%'". So the above query will execute as quickly on such databases as an '=' or 'IN'-based query.
