We were planning to do the exact same thing for our site, so I think it's a great idea. There may be even more to the solution. The Zope folks should probably look at the html standard for the image tag and add all attributes that are defined there to the image class. Zope vs. PHP

In the process of evaluation tools for designing database-backed dynamic web sites, I have narrowed the choices down to PHP and another product which you may have heard a few things about, Zope. I have a few questions about Zope. 1. Do any tools exist to make it easy to upload/download an entire website? What about transferring the Zope database over FTP? (The real question here is "How do people backup their remotely-hosted Zope websites?") 2. Is it easy to have multiple Zope databases? 3. Is there an easy way to do a global search-and-replace over an entire Zope-based web site? 4. Is there a way to write DTML macros? For example, presume that in my site, I always open tables like this: <table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" width="100%"> Is there any way to write a dtml tag, say "dtml-table", to abbreviate this? I'm not very familiar with Zope yet; is there a better way to accomplish this task? Additionally, how easy is it to code new DTML tags? I'm relatively well-versed in Python. Also, if anyone has used both Zope and PHP, I'd be very interested to see a (more or less) objective comparison of the two. Clearly, this forum favors Zope. Are there situations in which PHP is a better choice? Has anyone yet written a detailed comparison of the two products? Thank you very much in advance for any help or suggestions you have to offer. I'm extremely impressed so far with the quality of Zope and the responsiveness of the Zope community. Thanks, Ben

The about I get is always in "list" format ['item 1', 'this is item 2', 'I am the third item in the list'] So, I *know* its a list, why won't the "in" tag work, do I have to do some sort of name space tweaking? allowing users to create their own accounts

hi all! i have been using Zope for a couple of days now, and lovin' it..... although, i do have a question: i'm working on a site which allows anyone to create an account and with that account submit articles via a form on a submission page. basically, i am trying to get this to a point in which anyone with an account can add articles or perhaps edit their existing articles, so on, so forth. then once an article is posted it sends me an email to check it out. once i approve it, i then use Zope's versioning abilities, I could then publish that object which would allow anyone to see it. my question is this, knowing that this very much possible with Zope, how might one go about implementing something like this? ok, i am going to sneak another question under the radar: would it be better to use the native "object database" or perhaps a sql based db? or do i lose the versioning abilities if i dont use the object db as the primary means in which to publish? any suggestions? veritas ------ Do you do Linux? :) Get your FREE @linuxstart.com email address at: http://www.linuxstart.com

We have a customer who keeps almost 10000 objects in ZCatalog with no perceptable delay. Because ZCatalog uses BTrees, finding one object out of a million typically requires less than 20 'comparison' operations. One things I think you are bit confused about is the difference between storage (ZODB) and indexing the storage (ZCatalog). Their respective features and performance issues should be looked at seperately. ZODB is very robust and has no problem scaling into gigs of data. of course, many databases are also as robust as this. -Michel

It looks like your python is not finding any of it's libraries, which means it is misconfigured somehow. Seeing as this is not being reported by anyone else, I suspect this is a misconfiguration on your part, not that of the Zope release. You could prove me wrong, of course. -Michel

I get the same result using both the system Python and the included Python. Well, that's not entirely true.
