There are two ways to solve the problem: 1. MODIFY THE METHOD AND OUTPUT TO THROUGH AND <DTML-IN> Modify the SQL METHOD: select name, upper(vid_code) <<-----THIS WILL RETURN THE vid_code in UPPERCASE from vid where ACCOUNT_TYPE='secondary' and BROADCAST_STATUS='ACTIVE' and ascii(substr(lower(name),1,1)) between 48 and 57 ORDER BY ascii(substr(lower(name),1,1)) When you view this via DTML in and <dtml-in> TAGS specify the variable as <dtml-var upper(vid_code)> We figured this out because the test output of the SQLMETHOD prints upper(vid_code). If I am incorrect on the syntax above look at the TEST output from the SQLMETHOD! It should work! 2. MODIFY THE OUTPUT VIA DTML with a FORMAT ATTRIBUTE: HELP ME OUT HERE!!! <dtml-in kdjfajdfljalfjafj> <dtml-var thevariable fmt="uppercase??"> <<< THIS IS ONE THAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW!! I've tried the following to change a string to upper case in a ZSQL method: <dtml-sqlvar sNewAcctNo type=string upper> (doesn't work; sqlvar doesn't define 'upper') <dtml-let sNewAcctNo="_.upper(sNewAcctNo)"> (doesn't work; exceptions.AttributeError) <dtml-let sNewAcctNo="string.upper(sNewAcctNo)"> (doesn't work; exceptions.NameError) <dtml-let sNewAcctNo="upper(sNewAcctNo)"> (doesn't work; exceptions.NameError) What am I missing? A colleague is getting this error when trying to add a large file with ID UK99.zip I'm fairly sure that the file exists. Adding a test file worked OK. This *might* work partially in some half-brain-dead fashion in a single-threaded, non concurrent environment, but when you have other situations where you might have two people touching tables at the same time, in some cases dependent on each other... This is where "SELECT * FROM UPDATE" comes from. You have to tell the database that you plan to use some data in a calculation that you will then modify some other table based on, and you don't want someone playing with that core data while you're in the middle of your transaction. This is just the tip of the concurrency iceberg. It's all about keeping your data sane under load. I can write all kinds of hacks that will fix it in low usage situations, but will they hold up with 100+ concurrent users? Not to slam MySQL, but... it has it's place, but I'm not sure it's under heavy update loads. I have had the same setup without having this problem. Python is something of a cpu hog, and I have managed (during load testing) to overload it once or twice (kernel message: Python exited on signal 11) causing a need to restart Zope. Once I even bounced the box. But once I started running Zope with more threads (8), I was no longer able to kill anything, even when it got swamped. I think you're going the "wrong way" with the "-3". The PARENTS object is a Python list of object containers, indexed from 0 to n. PARENTS[0] is the current container. PARENTS[1] is the parent container of the current container. PARENTS[2] is the parent container of the parent container of the current container, et. al. When you say PARENTS[-3], what you're telling Zope you're looking for is the item third from LAST in the list, which in the case you were in /test would not exist, and therefore you get the error. You can check the mailing list for the hasattr method (function?) to check for existence of an object without raising an error (I'm not the one to ask, I've only used it once), if you'd like... But a better solution to this problem was given by Michel Pelletier in his answer to your question, which was to use code like this: <dtml-with test> <dtml-if "dir2 in PARENTS"> dir2 is one of your parents </dtml-if> </dtml-with> What this does in the expression "dir2 in PARENTS" is say, "iterate over the PARENTS list, and return true if dir2 is a member of the list". The hit right now is pretty harsh, though it should be getting better once FastCGI support is released (it's done, it just needs to be documented and fully tested). > 3. For application sanity, we expect all databases external to Zope to do the same, and MySQL obviously does not. This has caused us to not develop for it, regardless of its popularity in certain areas. It's simply incompatible with the architecture. Now, having said that, we're more than happy to see other people use it for whatever application they wish; understanding that you could suffer from serious data corruption because of the lack of transactions. Or you can manually lock the database, and wait for it to hit a race-condition. If you're willing to accept these risks, more power to you. Also, supposedly MySQL will get transactions in some form in the future (so I've heard), at which point, I suspect our position will change. For now, we recommend anyone doing heavy SQL work, which contains critical data, to use a database which has a robust transaction system (Oracle, Sybase, etc.). Please understand that one of the primary focuses of Zope is to never loose data, and never corrupt data. Doing so, without any transaction system, is nearly impossible.
