To ensure that security works as you need, you'll want to make sure that your acquisition path results in the correct security settings. Here are some options: Have the articles get added to a "submissions" Folder. Maybe you could use the Owner role to allow the authors to continue editing the articles until an editor has gotten around to moving theirs into the "issue" Folder. If you want a view that shows all articles by a given author, just use ZCatalog to list that author's articles (regardless of which issue they are located in). So, you can still maintain and author view, while your article URLs are stable. In KM|Net News, the URLs of the articles don't change at all through the process. Only the status changes... ZCatalog, and the upcoming "Topics" objects, do a lot to allow for arbitrary object organization. Kevin

Actually, while he says SunOS 5.7, that's actually Solaris 2.7, which does not have the 2Gb limit on files. However, you do have to do some voodoo when you build Python I believe to get this enabled. I'd look into the ./configure options. This is also required on Alpha to get the 64bit offsets. Rich client side questions

I have a project which fits very well with Zope's view of the world, except for the client side GUI[1]. I need the ability to directly manipulate objects with a minimum amount of traffic going back to the server[2]. I'm currently leaning toward using Java applets that use a CORBA like protocol with Swing[3]. The Java solution solves the interaction issues, but cuts out Zope as a method of getting data to the Java applet. The questions are: o Any other ideas besides Java to do the client side work? o If, I'm stuck using Java should I add a protocol such as NTTP-NG to Zope? o How well does Zope without Apache serve up applets? Footnotes: [1] HTML isn't going to cut it. [2] One example of this mode of interaction would be a plot. The user creates a plot and interacts by clicking and selecting the plotted objects. Another example is sweeping out a region with a mouse. [3] It may be HTTP-NG or IIOP. Jody Winston

i bet that a lot of people has their own collection of zclass. why not we put up the zclasses at zope site, so that we don't reinvent the wheel. it doesnot matter whether the classes are too simple or too <insert your own adj here>. if it's a class, put it there. i'm still too new to start my own product, but i've suceeded in creating a LinkCollection class, whi ch would take me more time if i did it in perl ( but i'm not going to throw away perl :)) it's not much but it's usable. (it's a class within a class ! mind you :) ) so, what say you guys? p/s - or is it there somewhere in the members area?

Zope Site back on track

The new zope site is back at http://www.zope.org/. Soon, the old Zope site will be back to http://www.zope.org:8080/. The security hole has been patched, and soon we will be making a 2.0.1 release. Further information about 2.0.1 will be forthcoming. I would suggest the EVERYBODY who uses Zope 2.0 upgrade to 2.0.1 whether or not they feel threatended by this security exploit. Other than the 2 line security patch, 2.0.1 is identical to 2.0. I would like to take this opertunity to remind everyone that PRIVATELY informing us of 'showstopper' security bugs is just good netiquette. This gives us an opportunity not only to analyze the problem and provide a quick fix (after all, it could just be *your* problem, and you'd be 'crying wolf'), it also prevents the widespread distribution of exploits before we have a chance to control the situation. I'm having trouble creating "selection" option Properties. It seems that no matter what I type in, I get the following error: Zope Error Zope has encountered an error while publishing this resource. Error Type: NameError Error Value: select_variable Is there a particular format for the value? I can't find any documentation concerning the creation of these variables. Thanks!
