Just to second Evan's motion, "site relative" links will make it much easier to move the Zope pieces you're building to another Zope instance, if and when the time comes. It's pretty painless to simply "Export" a subfolder, and then "Import" into another Zope, knowing that everything will still work, even though the DNS address, and name (alias), of the host has changed. This is quite common in a corporate environment with separate dedicated host machines, e.g., development, testing, and production. In this case only the latter would be a live Web server with real end users hitting Zope "pages", as opposed to us synthetic developer, and tester types. If you use absolute paths, you'll either have to go through all those hard coded addresses, and change them, which is nothing but completely avoidable drudgery, when you use the "site relative" approach. Sure, you could keep your systems on separate LANs that can't "see" each other, or do some fancy DNS manipulations and redirections so you can have duplicate names on different host machines. This latter notion isn't all that uncommon, Network Address Translation (NAT) has lot's of appropriate uses, but in this case it would just make your life unneccesarily more complicated than it needs to be. I've moved data from my desktop Zope (Win '95), to a testing host (NT), and finally to Sun Solaris, without having to change anything! Don't ask why we're not using Linux, it makes me very grumpy . . . Later, Jerry S.

I don't know what the status on 8i compatability is, have you tried it? It might just work. Note that Oracle's client libraries change in non-backwards compatable ways quite often. You many need to make minor adjustments to the code. Nice people use Unicode, but there are very few of them out there. :) Most people use BIG5 for the traditional characters, and GB (Guo Biao) for simplified characters. GB and BIG5 are two-byte encoded. You can tell from the first byte whether it's 7-bit ASCII character or a Chinese character. So, you can mix 7-bit ASCII characters and Chinese characters together without problem. There used to be a good website at www.ifcss.org, but always as things with the Chinese, people get political and fight between themselves, and sue each other in American courts. :) And voila, the website is gone. :) And now I am left in a limbo. You can probably find information just as fast as I do. Koreans are a lot luckier, as long as you don't use Hanja. :) Fact is, Korean is actually an alphabetized language. Typing Korean on computers is actually faster than typing Vietnamese. And Americans are eating up the rest of the world alive. Even the French are scratching their heads on what to do with http addresses... no one dares to use accented characters for their URL. Voila, so much for the defense of the French languages. Zope/SuSE 6.x How-To v0.1 ready for review

I was using base64's encoding, but then I was still running into problems. I don't remember the exact situation, but base64 was not good enough. At the end, I had to switch to urllib, by using urllib.quote_plus() and urllib.unquote_plus(). The resulting string was bulkier, I didn't like it too much... but at least it did not fail like base64. Dynamic sorting with dtml-in

Hi Zope-Folks! There is the question: I am displaying dynamic contents of a folder f using: <dtml-in "objectValues('type')"> [render stuff in a table] </dtml-in> So far, so good. I thought it would be nice, that when the user hits the table header of one coloumn of the table, the table gets reordered using <dtml-in "objectValues('type') sort=[new criteria]> So i factored the display method into a dtml-method called "show_table". But I simply can not figure out how to assign the sort attrib to the chosen value... I tried: <a href="show_table?sort=title">Title</a> but that did not work (as I thought) Any Ideas? Or do I have to rewrite the complete show_table to "show_table_sort_title"-stuff and call each seperately? There nust be a more Zopish thing to get that working. Hello all, I was reading through the achives in relation to this issue, and I was wondering if anyone was working on a solution. Our designers use various tools to edit html and these tools will need to be able to publish into a zope version. So for versions to be of use to us, we absolutely need to be able to access a version through some non-web interface (either ftp, webdav or something else). If no one else is or has plans to work on this, we will have to do it (for Zope to be a viable long term solution). I'd like to discuss the possible solutions. I personally think making the version traversable via ftp is the best solution (though webdav might be better, I don't know much about it at this moment). Michel noted that there may be some problems with absolute_url, but I'm not sure I understand the problem for simple file access (put/get) via traversal. (2) You use quote_plus() to transform the pickled object's string to another string. (3) You set the cookie with RESPONSE.setCookie() (4) You can now retrieve the cookie by using REQUEST.cookies['myCookieName'] (5) You unpickle the object. If your steps are different from the above, then I don't know what you are doing. :) A '\012' in the pickled object's string will be mapped to '%0a', which is perfectly fine to be stored as a cookie. python question/ LDAPAdapter product bug

We discovered a problem with the LDAP Adapter product. It seems that because of this line: name,password=tuple(string.split(decodestring(string.split(auth)[-1]), ':')) we get a ValueError (unpack tuple of wrong size) when the password contains a colon (:). does anyone know of a workaround for this? -- pity this busy monster, manunkind, | Dennis Moore | Sarah not.
