no hasattr() in Python Script?

I'm trying to call a Python Script from a DTML method using <dtml-var "units.statistics.edit(this())"> in order to edit some numeric properties of an object. I have "self" as the parameter list. If I set the object's property "foo" to "123" and make edit return(self.foo) I get "123". That's good. I'd like to be able to test if "foo" is already set, though. It seems obvious that I should be using hasattr(), but if I make edit if hasattr(self, 'foo'): return('set') else: return('not set') I get a NameError for "hasattr". I tried making it if _.hasattr(self, 'foo'): return('set') else: return('not set') and that doesn't generate an error, but it returns "not set". Any pointers? I'm hoping I'm missing something simple here. BTW, I'm using today's CVS (with kludges to make LoginManager work). Thank you. --kyler

[BUG] Background processes interfere with Zope's HTTP responses

Today was again a hard Zope day. Did you ever hear, that usually (i.e. if you do not do special things) Zope renders a complete page before it starts sending the result back to the client. This implies that you should never see only half of a page. I heard it and I saw the code that does it. Therefore, I was convinced that this were really the case. Then our client phoned: He visits a page that allows him to generate a newsletter. When he presses the "generate newsletter button", a result page is build that tells him that the newsletter is being generated and send is a few minutes. He reported, that this response page is build only half, then stops, to be completed only half a minute later, at the same time when the newsletter arrives. The effect is reproducible. If newsletter generation takes longer, he must wait longer for the page to complete. He is convinced that we generate the newsletter synchronously and let him wait until the generation is complete. And he is angry. I know, that the newsletter is generated in a background process, started in an external method with: os.system("gen_newsletter &") I try to reproduce the behaviour in our test environment and fail. I do not have to wait, until the newsletter generation finished. Then, I use the official service URL and see, I observe the same behaviour. The difference: in the test environment, the browser connects directly to ZServer; with the official URL, it connects via a proxy. Puzzling! What happened? The background process inherits Zope's open file descriptors. Among them are all currently open HTTP request sockets. The process keeps these sockets open until it finishes. There are two HTTP modes: 1. single request mode a new TCP connection is created for each HTTP request, the request is completed, when the TCP connection is closed. 2. multi request mode several requests share a single TCP connection. The "Content-Length" HTTP header allows client and server to determine the request boundaries. That means: when a client uses the multi request mode, everything is fine. Clients, however, that use the single request mode wait until their connection is closed and can observe serious delays. These delays may be very difficult to explain, as the background process not only delays its own request but may delay arbitrary other requests that happen to be served at the same time. How to fix the problem: There should be a (file) control "CloseOnExec", that tells Unix to automatically close the file like object upon an exec. ZServer should probably use it on each of its sockets. I can not see a serious application that should have direct access to ZServer's HTTP request socket. I will soon file a bug report into the Collector. Dieter

Hi all, does anybody know how I can get rid off this ugly 'traceback' in the loginForm object Zope displays when using LoginManager and BasicCookieAuthentication? Either because the browser ignores the redirect after an 401 Unauthorized, or because of the nature of dtml-raise which maybe prevents zope from interpreting following code. Maybe someone can shed some light on that. Perhaps you could try this: <dtml-unless "AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()=='Anonymous User'"> <dtml-raise type="Unauthorized"> Logout!! </dtml-raise> </dtml-unless> You are now logged out! Not very elegant (you have to enter one false login/pw combination for the unless to work), but perhaps someone else has a better idea. This may depend on why you want to log out - for just reaching Anonymous "status" this seems the right thing. Otherwise introducing a new kind of role might help "logout_user", so you could test for that. cheers, oliver

Stupid Newbie: Define permissions

Hi all, I understand permissions and proxying, but I feel like mentally challenged when trying to understand the following Define permissions tab in ZClass: ********* This interface is used to define how the operations of this object (or objects that acquire permission settings from this object) correspond to the operations defined by your product or ZClass. The table below has two columns. The first column lists the permissions for this object. The second column specifies the permissions that should have this permission in this product or ZClass. For ZClass methods, only permissions that are defined for the ZClass are permitted. In general, any permissions that include operations that change (mutate) an object should be disabled. The listing below shows the current permission mappings for this item. ********* I've read the online help but it still makes no sense. Could someone rephrase it in plain English? Or perhaps give an example or two? Zope blocks all my attempts of calling manage_changeProperties because of insufficient permissions. The property belongs to a subfolder contained in a Z Class contained in a Product. The manage_changeProperties is called from a method "changeLST" belonging to the Z Class. Zope also blocks attempts to display the property using simple <dtml-var> from a method "display" belonging to the Z Class. 1. If I map "Manage properties" permission from (disabled) to "View" permission, does that mean that anyone who has "View" permission (i.e. even anonymous users) can manage properties here? 2. Is the Define permissions the right place to solve this? Which one? A. the Define permissions tab of the containing Product?| B. Permission tab of ZClass? (the Manage properties is already listed as "inherited") C. the Define permissions tab of ZClass (Manage properties is mapped to (disabled)) D. the Define permissions tab of the subfolder (this tab actually displays ../propertysheets/methods/subfolder, and Manage properties is mapped to (disabled)) E. the Define permissions tab of "changeLST" method. After a few experiments, it looks like: - to allow anyone run the "display" method, D is right. ("Access contents information" assign to "View") - to allow anyone run the changeLST method, E is right ("Manage properties" assign to "View") To sum it up, the Define permission says "what right (in the second column) must user possess in order to be able to do the thing specified in the first column". And also: "If the second column does not have a specific permission you need, you have to go to the containing Z Class, click on Permissions and add the desired permission in the 'Class permissions' list box." Frankly, the sentence "The second column specifies the permissions that should have this permission in this product or ZClass." from the online help still makes no sense to me. Hello, * I have a regular Catalog. * It is used by Yihaw (ZClass product, CatalogAware, with contained ZClasses). * I done the normalize_paths (0 updated) * I can browse the catalog without any problem and acces the objects *** method testCatalog1 OUTSIDE<br> <dtml-in "Catalog(meta_type='any type')"> INSIDE<br> </dtml-in> produce only : OUTSIDE while *** method testCatalog2 OUTSIDE<br> <dtml-in Catalog> INSIDE<br> </dtml-in> produce A LOT of INSIDE I'm on 2.2.4 with the 3 latest Hotfix, Transparent Folder 0.3 and your catalog path. About LoginManager and ZPatterns, they won't help you for the Basic http-authentication. This is really a client-side problem.
