I think I have to conclude that Heer Linde's problem is an artifact of something besides the DTML machinery, as no combination of properties and subobjects seems to yield the same result. So much for my rant on Zope's inscrutability in mangling a poor, helpless property value, and requiring such an ugly workaround. Policy -- Docs link to source

I'd like to suggest, that, as a matter of community policy, all documentation contain links back to the relevant source-code files. The goal is to make it possible for someone reading a source file to conveniently find all relevant documentation about that file (including commentaries in email lists and other forums). At the very least, links could be implemented as a textual mention of the source file. In that case, a search on the source-file name would bring up all relevant documentation. For example, the Chapter 4.II.2 "Zope Publisher" on http://zdp.zope.org/guide/ZBook/Outline/Chapter_2/Part2_4/Part24_2 could terminate with a brief paragraph saying that the ZPublisher is implemented primarily in ../lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py. That way a reader of Publish.py could find the overview of Chapter 4.II.2 when searching on "Publish.py". Another example is at the bottom of my "HowTo: ZClass Properties" (http://www.zope.org/Members/lstaffor/zProperties) I recently added the source-file links after doing some research in the Properties source code, and wishing I could read everything that had been written on the subject. Of course, I could search on "property" or "properties", but that would not result in as focussed a set of results. Documents that are part of some Zope document-management application might even have methods that return lists of relevant source files. That way special source-documentation catalogs could be built (topics?). I am not sure how far we need to go in that direction, though. Ideally the technique for linking and cataloging could be shared by official documents as will as ZDP and individual contributions (such as How-To's). If the technique cannot be shared, at least the policy should be. An idea worth pursuing? -- Loren

My original question was how to check if the user omits the filename in a submitted form: <dtml-if newimage> <dtml-call "manage_addImage('id', newimage.read(), '')"> </dtml-if> One option was to use name="filename:string:ignore_empty" but this seems to confuse Zope's content-type recognition when a file is actually selected. CV/Resume database (was: How-to generate an XMLDocument automatically?)

Hi Matthieu, I can't address the XML question but I can describe how I implemented a CV/Resume in Zope that is working very nicely indeed. I created a Product as follows: root Control_Panel Products CVProduct PersonClass properties (nonchanging personal info) methods DegreeClass AwardsClass EmploymentClass HobbyClass I add a PersonClass instance with unchanging personal details, photo, etc. This person can then add any number of DegreeClass, AwardsClass, EmploymentClass, HobbyClass instances. All of these have StartDate, EndDate and Active fields in addition to Class-specific fields. It is then very easy to render a complete CV by looping over these instances. You might have already implemented this - if not, give it some thought as it's very flexible. Kudos to Phillip for suggesting this OO pattern. Cheers, Darran.

ZServer Ports

Hi I've installed Zope on a Linux server and got it to work on port 8080. The problem is that to get to the Zope site the user has the type http://www.???.com:8080 when I really want them to type in just the url without the port. The installation uses Redhat Linux 6.1 and has the Apache Server running on Port 80 and ZServer running on port 8080. I need to keep Apache on the system to run other sites not using Zope. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks in advance Chris

Re using a DTML method as the value for a property of type "selection", I apologize for not reading AlexR's How-To (http://www.zope.org/Members/AlexR/SelectionLists) in its entirety. Alex gives an example of building up the list from scratch. In my case, the list is a property of my globals folder which lives under the root so the DTML method should be simply: <dtml-with globals><dtml-return Choices></dtml-with> rather than <dtml-with globals><dtml-var Choices></dtml-with> as the latter gives a string rather than a python list. I'm still looking for a way of referencing globals.Choices directly without having to write this root-level method ... Cheers, Darran.

Uploading image files via forms ...

Imagine a ZClass that can optionally contain an image. You'll probably have something like the following in your addForm method: <INPUT TYPE="file" NAME="newimage" VALUE=""> In your ZClass add constructor, after the new instance is created, we want to (conditionally) create the image only if a file was chosen. How? A piece of code like the following doesn't work: <dtml-if newimage> <dtml-call "manage_addImage('id', newimage.read(), '')"> </dtml-if> When no file is chosen, Zope still creates an image (size 0) because REQUEST.newimage is defined (albeit empty). I immediately tried <dtml-if "_.len(_.str(newimage)) !=0"> <dtml-call "manage_addImage('id', newimage.read(), '')"> </dtml-if> but this still creates a size 0 image. Why? Well, there's yet another possible way out of this mess as documented in the How-to "http://www.zope.org/Members/Zen/howto/FormVariableTypes" <INPUT TYPE="file" NAME="newimage:string:ignore_empty" VALUE=""> with <dtml-if "newimage !=''"> <dtml-call "manage_addImage('id', newimage, '')"> </dtml-if> (Note, the string typecast is necessary or else ignore_empty seems to have no effect.) This works in that not choosing a file stops the image from getting created and an image does get created if one was chosen. The problem now is that the string typecast has lost the content_type of the uploaded image. If it was "image/gif", it now shows up as a raw octet_stream. If anyone can provide a way out of this morass, I'd greatly appreciate it. Cheers, Darran "veteran newbie" Edmundson
