What happened to Tabula? Aqueduct?

A long time ago, (probably in a galaxy far, far away), I looked at Zope (versions 1.x). And, I have finally recognized the errors of my ways and have returned. So, in my re-learning curve, I was going through the various "guides" and the quick start. The quick start has the following section under Application Development: >Programming Data with Tabula > >Zope enables "stupid" data to become smart. Aqueduct gives smarts to relational data, >Tabula gives it to desktop-based data (such as DBF files). While Aqueduct's data is >external to Zope, Tabula brings its data inside. Besides speedy searches and flexible >reports, Tabula adds intelligence to its data through computed fields, hierarchies and >acquisition, plus all the features of DTML Scripting, especially direct querying. So, the question is ... "What happened to Tabula?" Did the name change? Is it embedded somewhere in Zope? I think Aqueduct became the ZODBC Adapter. It turns out that I would love to be able to access "desktop-based data (such as DBF files)." My platform will be Linux. (If it was Windows, I could probably just use the ZODBC stuff.) I have found at least one Python module to access DBF files. But, if there is a Zope oriented solution, that would obviously be better. If EVERYTHING you need can be put on the CD-ROM (typically this disqualifies relation databases other than gadfly) you can -- in fact, the CD we produced for the Zope Track at the Python conference contained demo binaries for Win32 and Linux. The demo app contained all of the Zope lists messages in a ZCatalog-searchable index... Pretty cool. Jens Vagelpohl here (mailto:jens@digicool.com) worked on that project and might be able to offer some tips. --Rob

I discovered the source of my problem with formatted dates. To recap, create a DTML *document* with the following code: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-var mydate><br> <dtml-var mydate fmt="%Y"><br> <dtml-var mydate fmt="%d/%m/%Y - %H:%M"> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> Now add a property to this document (not possible for methods) called "mydate", make it of type "date" and enter the date value "01/01/2000". Try rendering the document by selecting the View tab. On my machine I see the following: 2000/01/01 1999 31/12/1999 - 14:00 Zope with no formatting assumes the date I entered is in local time. Add formatting however and the date is now assumed to be GMT. Since Zope obviously knows my timezone, why not maintain consistency by assuming that dates are to be rendered in the same time zone that they were inputted? At this late hour I cannot see the rationale for this. Could someone please enlighten me. Cheers, Darran.

Does anyone have any info on this vraibale? The DTML guide mentions this as a variable that influences the dtml-tree tag, but is very vague as to what it does. I'm trying to produce a site-navigation tree to go down the left of the page. I've got the tree working now, the hard bit was: <dtml-tree expr="PARENTS[-2]" branches_expr="objectValues(['DTML Document','Folder'])"> which keeps the tree display anchored to a fixed point in the Zope tree. But I now need to ensure that the document being viewed is expanded in the the tree, so for example, if I'm viewing test.html in the /Test folder, I want the tree to look like: -Root -Test text.html not: +Root or -Root +Test if you see what I mean. Can anyone help? cheers, Chris

I think it would be kind of helpful to declare enumerations and output for the base-class only (with something like <dtml-call "this().render"> and an overloaded render-method for the current object). Ok, you can of course do some tricks to get this (something like declaring folder-properties ['Folder','upload folder'] and than look local to the folder object in which you do enumerate, BUT that is simply not very nice since in forces the admin to set those properies every time you simply whish to enumerate some objects and it is, of course, a source for stupid bugs. The thing which I do not like very much about it is that whenever you assign multiple roles to multiple uer-objects on many levels of the tree, you easily loose track about who has which access-rights and who does not... This is not the case right now... but you never know. Maybe it is anyhow the best to note most of thoses things on a piece of paper ;) Thanks for your help regards, Ingo.

help with Sorting concepts.....

Hi Folks, I've been working on lots of different things... and every now and then I see that someone is getting frustrated with sorting this or that in Zope... Zieve: "http://www.zope.org/Members/sspickle/Zieve" is supposed to end all that frustration.. but alas I've had no time to make it perfect. It currenly uses a cookie to keep track of the users sorting preference. (The idea is that the *user* knows how the list should be sorted, not the developer.... ;-> ) Anyway.... I haven't been able to come up with any simple way to do this *without* a cookie. (Sessions perhaps? I dunno... should I make this depend on some other session technology?) Anyway.. I'm mostly just fishing for ideas about how to make this thing more useful. Martijn P. at one point suggested that it be a tag... but I think I need some more direction with that idea... How would making it a tag help get rid of the cookie? Or is it that there would be a different cookie for each tag? Anyway comments welcome as usual.... -steve

strange line in BaseRequest.py

Hi! I am using Zope 2.1.2/Linux ix86. Now there is a line in $PYTHONDIR/lib/python/ZPublisher/BaseRequest.py which does riddle me: if user is None and roles != UNSPECIFIED_ROLES: response.unauthorized() (line 441/442). I ran into this one because I set up one folder to be an internal uploading folder which should generally not be accessible from anonymous users. So I added users to the acl_user folder, gave them a write_role and set up permissions correctly. Everything worked so far. The write_role was globally declared within the root-folder, the users were declared locally within the folder which was designed to be used for uploads (not above). I entered the (anonymously viewable) site and changed to the private folder; I was asked for uname and pwd and got access to the private folder. Ok. But then I wanted to go to the public area again... which raised the "unauthorised" response at the above lines. I figured that declaring the users on the level of the anonymously viewable pages and passing the write_role to these users locally within the upload folder settled my problem, since they were not "None" anymore within traverse. BUT: are these lines no mistake? How can a user which is None have roles? The manual states that any user implicitly has the "anonymous role"... which he has not, according to the lines above. (Please: I did NOT study traverse() very hard, so please excuse this, maybe, dumb question). Regards, Ingo ------------------------------------------

Zope and Polymorphism

Hi! Since Zope is based on an OO-DB and you can add and edit objects in an intuitive manner, there is a question which does I simply can not figure out: You can inherit methods and attributes from other objects (even multiplie inheritance), but do these objects behave like their parents in respect to identification? To illustrate my problem: UploadFolder inherits Folder <dtml-in "objectValues(['Folder'])"> [...] </dtml-in> Imagine I have several Folders together with some UploadFolders in one Folder container. The above code would simply enumerate over "real" Folders, would it not? There are two questions: * maybe "objectValues" is the wrong method... which one does it? * do I have to know the class name *explicitly*? (this would force me to rewrite enumerations of object every time I create new classes) Thanks for the advices. Regards, Ingo. ------------------------------------------
