dtml docs, methods and trees, newbie qs

Apologies if these are oft-asked q's but I can't find an obvious answer anywhere in the docs. It seems that if I put the simplest dtml-tree <dtml-tree> <dtml-var id> <dtml-tree> in a dtml method it works ok. If i put it in a dtml doc it doesn't. If I put it in a method then refer to that in a doc (with <dtml-var> that doesn't work either. Therefore if I want to use a tree I have to use a method. Is that correct? This brings up several q's. 1. How can I call a method and have it do its stuff from a doc? Tried evey which way but I can't get a tree to work by doing this. 2. Since I can't find anything I can't do with a method why have docs at all? 3. What is the most important piece of understanding I am missing to figure out answers to9 these q's. So our platforms are difference, but the issues is that I was able to get to a DB2 database via the ODBC driver.

In response to a couple of requests, here's the code that I use to post from our automation mailing list to the site http://beta.control.com/. Please feel free to visit the site, I've meant to announce it here for a while. It will go public (and change its url to www.control.com) sometime in March. The site will be down briefly later today while I upgrade it from Zope 2.0.x to 2.1.4. postToControlCom is an executable Python script that uses xmlrpc to talk to Squishdot. paths.py is a hack stolen from Mailman that lets postToControlCom use a bit of Mailman code. SquishExternals.py contains a Zope ExternalMethod that worries about trying to figure out where to add a reply in Squishdot. It's far from perfect; the current indexing scheme that Squishdot uses doesn't like some of the Subject lines that show up on the list fairly often (e.g. "words" that contain hyphens, letters and numbers mixed together such as "IEC1131-3"). Since the indexing stuff has changed with ZCatalog and there'll be a new Squishdot soon, we've just been living with the problems for now. Note, the use of __call__ in SquishExternals.py depends on a minor fix I made to Squishdot. Squishdot's standard __call___ method doesn't permit you to pass a dictionary instead of putting the search arguments in REQUEST. This caused problems for us because it was too easy for unwanted search keys to pollute REQUEST. To fix this, find the reference to REQUEST.set in the __call__ method and replace it with: try: REQUEST.set('summary',body) except AttributeError: # Assume we got a dictionary instead of a Request object REQUEST['summary'] = body Dan Pierson, Control.com, <dan(a)control.com>

A simple <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect('http://www.yahoo.com')"> redirects your page to Yahoo page. This is a very simple solution. This way you don't violate any law. The next simplest solution is to use HTML frames. You display the foreign page in a frame. But you must be obtaining data from a consenting third party or provide disclosure statements or features to remove the frame. The best thing to do is to use Python external methods, where you can extract things from a foreign source and even strip things that you don't want. (I don't know whether DTML has any method to do this directly. But using Python external methods allows you much more flexibility, because you can filter the fetched data dynamically, using functions from the string or the regular expression modules.) how can I dynamically bring in external page

What I want to do is have a page served by zope which is in fact on another non Zope server but to do this dynamically with dynamic pages, not just by pasting the html. The actual pages I want to bring in are HyperNews discussion pages. Best of all would be able to serve a HyperNews discussion page as part of a table. All advice welcome. Hi, Shalabh helped me a lot further, he gave me an external method which helps me on the way, however I would like to know if it's possible to write this in a DTML-method. If this isn't possible, then why isn't this possible? Here is the external method (placed in the Methods view of a class) def manage_afterAdd(self,item,container): item.myparent=container.id return Is it possible to write this in DTML? No, not directly as far as I know. But refering to you first question: is there any reason why a <from the top of my head> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('parent', container.id)"> <dtml-call "manage_changeProperties(REQUEST)"> after you created the instance would not work? I do this all the time. Or do I misunderstand your question? Rik
