There is little in the way of indirection or encapsulation within Zope. That is, most products reach directly into other products to find classes/functions. When you reload a product, to properly reload, you will need to reload every product which is dependent on that product. Furthermore, you'll need to track down every class and instance reference which uses the product's elements (which may be, for instance, stored in some global registry of available classes (which might be built by a given product), or might be in the object cache etc.) and rebuild/replace those items. You could try clearing the object cache, scanning the global registries for potentially dependent instances or classes, then re-loading all products (in case some have global registries). I don't think this will be an enormous amount better (time-wise) than restarting. Nothing is particularly impossible, but the process is unlikely to be simple or straightforward given the current architecture. You could try re-architecting Zope so that it uses more of a traditional plug-in API, that is, some set of methods are registered/watched on an object, all interaction between the object and the system goes through that API. Not sure about how you do stand-alone objects in that model, likely have to simply rebuild all objects when a product is rebuilt. With Apache, it is more usually the case that unless someone specifically says something is NOT possible, there is a way to do it. :) ProxyPass creates a complete separate TCP connection on the backside. Assuming you want to use an SSL connection between the users and your Apache front end, and a non-SSL connection between the Apache proxy and your Zope back server, Apache does this easily. Just make sure Apache is built with SSL support, and add the SSLEngine, SSLCertificateFile, and SSLCertificateKeyFile directives to the overall config or VirtualHost section.

Interbase does replication. I haven't really figured out how it will work with Zope and one will have to store Zope objects in Interbase for proper replication. It may be worth investigating. heirarchical diretcory based on zcatalog

Hi all. Bin rooting around trying to find something and can't so I thought i'd ask here - see if it's been done already. I like the idea of the ZTopics in the PTK but would like the Topic to generate subtopics automatically from other keywords found in all catalogued objects containing the parent keyword. So, for eg, if the parent was 'drugs' and there was an object with the keywords 'drugs' and 'abuse' then there would be a subtopic of 'abuse' automatically listed somewhere on the page. This would be a link to the same page only now the parent is both drugs AND abuse and will display any further categories. This way there will never be 'empty' categories and no need to add them manually if a new category is inadvertently added (when creating a document). Does this make sense? Should I be talking to the PTK list? My problem is simple that I cannot get my head round the dtml required to do this and cannot seem to find an example to crib from ... Any help here? Here is my logic: The user types a word into a field and hits enter - this become the parent word. 1. Find a document in the catalog with keyword = parent and type = definition and render its index_html. (I can do this bit) 2. Find in the catalog all documents with keyword = parent and produce an unique values list of all other keywords. 3. display in various 'slashboxes' all items with the keyword = parent. Ie a box with links to news anothe woth links to events etc. This way there will be an over all view of the word with the option to 'drill down' reducing the number of displayed links each time (because they now are filtered on both words. Homelessness is a very broad field - the list of poteential subtopics generated in a user-contributed site would be extensive so I am trying to create a quasi-knowledge management interface without to many limits. Multilingual sites

Has anybody build (succesfully) a site with multiple languages (v.e. English, Japanese, Russian, etc.)? I need to build such a site where the visitor can select the language and everything chnges. I'm guessing I'll be needing to have different versions of each document in each language and switch versions depending on the session ID and so on. Any ideas will be apreciated. Adrian

Renderable Base ZClass

Hello, it's not clear to me how the Renderable Base ZClass product is working. I've created a Zclass image with the renderable base property selected. HELP: External methods as methods of objects...

After searching through the archives for something relevant it seems like most people are calling external methods from DTML, rather than accessing them directly through the web. So I guess my first question is, is there a big reason for that? My real question: I've set up an external method that is meant to parse the file it is called on. So if my folder has a File object called "spam", and my external method "parse", I can call "/spam/parse" to call the method on the object spam: self.id() is "spam". However, as far as I can tell this only works for files and folders; if I try it on a DTML Document I get a missing docstring error. You can't add __doc__ as a property, and there's a __doc__ both at the top level of my module and for the function. Any way around this?
