Totally new user help request

Hi, I'm new not only to zope but Linux in general. I thought that by trying to install and run a content management system on Linux would be a good way to learn... I've managed to install zope, as root, and I've even installed ZAP but I can't seem to access the /manage URL. >From ZAP I did ./startzap and it said that Apache was started successfully. I can serve web pages with Apache successfully. I'm running Redhat 6.1 (Cartman) I have read as much documentation as I could find about installation etc. but I saw now mention of this particular problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, including advice to the effect that I've been overly ambitious :) Emory

Zmethod import folder

Hi, I'm trying to import an external Zmethod for the first time into my Zope installation, and I think I've got something wrong. I created the "import" folder at what I see as the root of my Zope installation. Perhaps I might have placed it in the wrong place? The import directory is currently at the same level as the Zserver,bin, doc inst, lib and pcgi folders.. When I try to import the files, Zope returns a IOError, "[Errno 21] is a directory". If anyone sees an obvious error, please fill me in. Thank you.. Chris

newbie Cookies vs something

Ok this is not really a zope issue persay but I am having difficulty with persistent data. I want to be able to use variable across pages but it seems like the only way I can do that is to use forms. But of course the variable dissipates after it is used. How can I keep persistent data. I have never used cookies and can't see how to integrate the cookie back into zope even if I do use it. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. - Bryan

Soft References in DTML

I'm constantly running into this general problem in DTML - how do I access an object or property who's name is given in a string? Here's a specific problem: I've got a Zclass product that has a string property in a sheet that's supposed to hold the name of the prefered cascading style sheet used when rendering the object. The name is automatically added to the header of the html doc when rendered, like this: <link href="<dtml-var style_sheet>" ...> But the style sheet itself lives a few directories down from the document being rendered so I really want the absolute URL. If I could act the object I could do <dtml-var "css_object.absolute_url()"> - but the name css_object (or whatever) is the value of the string style_sheet. So how can I dereference the string? ODBC client for Zope on Linux/Unix

Hi Zope Fans, We are looking at moving some of our backend data sources to NT (don't ask) and have had no luck coming up with a good connection scheme for Zope running remotely. Some form of Zope DA that can interface with ODBC / JDBC would seem to be reasonable. Alternately adding a minimal Zope on NT to send ZClient requests through might work, but seems suboptimal. Anyone else having better luck with this one? Thanks, Jerry S.

Managing tons of inter-related DTML methods

Dia dhaoibh mo chairde Zopeannach! (Irish variation of "hello fellow Zopistas". A bit irregular in Irish which does not have the letter 'Z':-) I am creating DTML methods at a rate of knots and wondering how best to manage them in a modular fashion. I like the idea of segregating the methods into folders but am worried about arranging that the methods that call each other can do so... Also, I have a shed load of external methods. What is recommended practice here? Bundle all code into a single Python module, use many modules. Does it matter? I want lots of uptime. On my Linux box, and on my Zope. Problem is, there are so many cool products being developed all the time, so I have to restart Zope all the time. Is there a (hackish?) way to update filesystem installed products? Accouting software?

For my current project, I need software to manage billing, accounting information, etc ... Has someone here ever linked zope to the equivalent of Sage / Navision / SAP software for that kind of purpose? Any alternative idea? (I'm interested in either commercial or free/open-source software).
